What I envy Jap is they look into having robots to serve them instead of thinking of easy solutions by relying on foreign labours.

Do you encourage your kids to be scientists or engineers?
or follow the same hoard mentality - either doctors, lawyers, accountants or bankers ?

Since most of our kids are going to be bankers, lawyers and accountants, our skill sets are limited to serving the richs and exploit the poors.

Build robots in Singapore to serve us? Go where to find the expertise?? Import FTs?

I encourage my kid to do what he has interest in. If he wants and is interested to be a cook, so be it.

Do you know Spore invest a lot in cancer research? Where do u think we find such expertise? We pay big money for top end cancer researchers to come here. So why cant do likewise for engineering? ST Eng can build tank and weapons and we can invest to build satellite. So why not invest in robots? I think the answer is obvious. Building robots to serve pp dont make big money. Even if Japan is willing to sell their robots, Spore might not want to buy them simply because its expensive and having foreigner workers can do possibly a better job at much cheaper price. But if the robots can replace a soldier, rest assured we will import a million of them so that our soldiers can serve other sectors and create higher GDP.

COI to investigate Little India riot: PM Lee

SINGAPORE — A Committee of Inquiry (COI) will be convened to investigate last night’s riot at Little India and how the incident was handled on the ground, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said in a statement today (Dec 9).

The COI will also review the current measures to manage areas where foreign workers congregate and give suggestions on how they can be improved, Mr Lee added.

HE also said last night’s riot at Little India was an isolated incident and it should not tarnish our views of the foreign worker community in Singapore.

“The vast majority of foreign workers in Singapore are law-abiding workers. They contribute to our economy, working hard to earn a living and support their families back home. We must not allow this bad incident to tarnish our views of the foreign worker community here,” Mr Lee said.

He added: “The riot in Little India was a very serious incident. There is no excuse for such violent and criminal behaviour. We are investigating the incident thoroughly and will deal with the culprits with the full force of the law.

“I also offer my deepest condolences to the family of Mr Sakthivel Kumaravelu, who was killed in the traffic accident that preceded the riot.

“I am glad the Home Team officers who were injured in the incident have been discharged from the hospital, and are recovering well. I wish them a complete and speedy recovery.

“I urge Singaporeans to remain calm and continue with our daily lives. Support our frontline officers in the Home Team, and share any leads you may have with the Police. Let us stay united as one people as we deal with this unfortunate incident, and keep Singapore a safe and orderly country.”

Minister Lui Tuck Yew speculated the riots caused by alcohol .

I went down to Race Course Road again, it was a very different scene from last night. The streets have been cleared, debris removed, shops are open for business. I spoke to a number of residents. Many of them were frightened by the incident. Two told me that they had seen and lived through much worse in the 60s, and this was nothing compared to what happened then. I know the Police will step up their presence in the area in the weeks to come to enhance the safety and security for residents.

We need to look carefully into how big a part alcohol contributed to the severity of the rioting last night. There are just too many shops selling liquor in the area and we ought to put a limit on this, the amount of alcohol that can be sold, where alcohol can be consumed and the hours that alcohol consumption is permitted

yup, me too, just drove pass again today, just to kaypo. no debris, no nothing, except the same "crossing road without regards" mentality.... sigh... when will they learn to treasure life?

Is life worth saving only 5 mins, to dash across road instead of using the traffic lights?

The riot in Little India last night was a serious but isolated incident. Understandably, many are stunned or flabbergasted as this is the first in decades. According to news reports, the authorities have restored calm and order to the area, and are continuing with their investigations. I sincerely thank the Home Team officers for responding to the call of duty and wish the officers who were injured a speedy recovery.

For now, we should support our frontline officers from the Home Team and give them encouragement. We should also stay calm, show resilience, and continue our daily lives normally. So far, while there is much online chatter, I am somewhat relieved to observe that Singaporeans have remained composed while going about their daily activities.

This alcohol story is good. We can increase tariffs on alcohol to reduce consumption. Good for health, reduce chances of pp rioting and most importantly increase our coffers.
