Varying health standards apply: Mr Eu said the product in the US health scare was made in Hong Kong and meant for sale only there. - PHOTO: LIANHE ZAOBAO
THE Eu Yan Sang herbal formula at the centre of a health scare is the 135-year-old traditional Chinese medicine retailer's best-selling product, accounting for 14 per cent of the group's revenues each year.
The company's chief executive Richard Eu, the great-grandson of Eu Kong, the founder of Eu Yan Sang, said that until the health scare involving Bo Ying Compound, the company had had no issues with lead poisoning for more than a century.
Referring to the alleged poisoning case in the US, he said: "We think we're unfortunate victims of all this. A dietary supplement (where higher levels of lead are acceptable) was tested as a food additive.
"Social media being what it is, everything spread, so there's a lot of misunderstanding of the situation."
