*POWER OF ENDURANCE*

The utmost accomplishment in cultivation is one’s ability to endure, as our endurance is our greatest strength. If you wish for serenity and peace at home, you have to endure; if you wish for social safety, you have to learn to endure; if you wish to resolve troubles, you must learn to endure; only then you could survive in this world. Therefore, we have to adopt the wisdom of Buddha to resolve troubles in our daily lives. We ought to learn three methods in life: firstly, learn to admit our mistake; because after you have admitted, the mistake will no longer exist. Secondly, learn to be flexible, patient and accommodating. Thirdly, seek to understand and learn to let go.

*HOW TO BREAKTHROUGH IGNORANCE*

Caller: Master, how many types of ignorance that a person needs to eradicate?

Master Jun Hong Lu: What do you think? The bad habits of a person are innumerable! 84,000! That is why we say there are 84,000 Dharma methods to help them.

Caller: In our daily life, there are those who consume the meat of sentient beings, while Buddhist practitioners make vows to practise full vegetarianism in their effort to observe the precepts. This itself eradicates the ignorance of eating meat. The monastics for e.g. have to observe more than 300 precepts. May I ask, is it through observing one particular precept we are able to eradicate one particular type of ignorance?

Master Jun Hong Lu: That is right. The more precepts you are able to observe, the more types of ignorance you are able to eradicate.

Caller: That’s why Master Lu keeps telling us that the stricter we are in our keeping to the precepts, the easier it is for us to break through ignorance and be enlightened.

Master Jun Hong Lu: Yes. You have to rely on your effort in keeping the precepts in order to break through ignorance. When you can’t tell what’s right and wrong in the beginning, you should start by observing the precepts. This is because at this time, greed, hatred and ignorance in you have obscured your pure inherent nature resulting in your inability to discern and giving rise to a biased mind.

*AS HUMANS*

We should,
give in to others when situations favour us,
give ground to others when we are right,
and not to ridicule others when we are capable.

This is because,
a shrewd person will be disliked;
a fussy person will be loathed and
a conceited person will be hated.

*CRITICALLY ILL PATIENTS CAN RECITE THE GUAN YIN CITTA _EMERGENCY CODE_ DAILY*

Caller: Master, you have mentioned before that in times of emergency, we can save lives by reciting the Guan Yin Citta _Emergency Code_ 7829 (_Great Compassion Mantra_ 7 times, _Heart Sutra_ 8 times, _Eighty-Eight Buddhas Great Repentance_ twice, _Xiao Zai Ji Xiang Shen Zhou_ 9 times). Can the critically ill patient recite the Guan Yin Citta _Emergency Code_ 7829 and pray to Bodhisattva daily to help him and save his life?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Yes.

Caller: Recite daily 1 time of the 7829 code?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Yes.

Caller: Can this be applied across all conditions?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Yes. The 7829 _Emergency Code_ is very efficacious.

Caller: Deepest gratitude to Guan Yin Bodhisattva, deepest gratitude to Master.

*TO RECOGNISE THE FRUIT OF KARMA THROUGH THE SOWING OF CAUSE*

You want to claim that you aspire to be a Buddha, and yet you do not wish to abandon your evil thoughts and deeds. How is that possible?

If you are a monkey but you aspire to be a human, why don't you just stand up and start walking? Why don't you cut off that tail of yours? But here you are saying, “It hurts, it's hard to stand up and walk”. In that case, how can you become a human?

If you aspire to be a Bodhisattva, how can you not eliminate all the greed and hatred in you? That is why you are here in this world and you are generating more karma!

For non-Buddhist practitioners, they think they are just living their life. In reality, they are just creating karmas!

What kind of karma are they generating? Sometimes, good karma, sometimes evil karma and they are not even aware of it, thinking that this is just part and parcel of life! In reality, these karma lay the foundation for the karmic fruit they are bound to reap in the future.

*WISDOM EQUATES HUMILITY AND BEING CAUTIOUS*

(Master Jun Hong Lu's call-in radio program)

Caller: A Buddhist practioner thought that he was not diligent in cultivation. However, other Buddhist practioners, who know him very well, had dreams that he cultivated well. For example, they dreamt that he became a Bodhisattva, brought a lot of delicious food for other Buddhist friends, or had a divine power to help them. Nonetheless, he does not think himself in that way. What is the reason behind this?

Master Jun Hong Lu: When others say that you are good, but you do not think in that way, you are indeed humble. I mentioned this during my recent public talk: I said: “What is wisdom? Wisdom is about being humble and cautious at all times. A wise person will humbly seek advice from others and learn a lot. You will not make mistakes if you do things cautiously and work on your goals one step at a time. So wisdom encompasses modesty and prudence. Understand?

*FENG SHUI THROUGH THE NOSE*

Master Jun Hong Lu: If you can smell a foul odour coming from the bathroom as soon as you arrive home, would you say that this is good feng shui? If instead you smell a fragrant scent the moment you open the door, you will be in a much more positive mood.

So, when the nose smells pleasing scents, the energy field of the home is positive, and it has good feng shui. Otherwise, if you are confronted by a wretched stench as soon as you open the door, then your home definitely has bad feng shui. After taking in these bad smells for a little while, your mood will turn sour, and you will slowly begin to have arguments. So, a home with negative energy field will certainly be riddled with bad luck.

For those of us who frequently burn incense at home, the home will be gradually filled up with Buddha’s fragrances, or we can also set out fragrant flowers to transform the energy field.

As soon as you smell a pleasing fragrance, feng shui will naturally improve. On the other hand, if the smells of a space leave you feeling annoyed or nauseated, that is certainly not good feng shui.

If you spend all day looking at the clouds, worshipping Buddha, and reciting the Buddhist scriptures, and then you are met with a pleasant smell when you walk in the door, is this not good feng shui?

*BEING KIND & COMPASSIONATE CAN AMOUNT TO BOUNDLESS MERITS*

Master Jun Hong Lu: To be able to succeed in achieving one’s resolution, one needs to amass his merits consistently over a period of time. We have to *constantly introspect our heart*, *for our blessings can only grow when our heart is filled with compassion*. Only a blessed person is able to accumulate meritorious blessings; and with compassion, we will have even more good fortune bestowed upon us. Therefore, *one who is blessed with good fortune must be a compassionate person*. When you adopt the wisdom (prajna) of Bodhisattva to understand the sufferings of others, you are in fact putting Mahayana into practice. *Master hopes that every Buddhist practitioner will learn to be kind and compassionate, and transform these energies into boundless merits*. In this modern world where everyone is trying to deceive one another; this poses as the biggest challenge for one to dedicate oneself to progress and practice all-embracing heart along the path of Dharma learning.

*REDUCE DESIRES AND LET THINGS TAKE THEIR OWN COURSE*

There is a concept: 'have less desire and let things take their own course'. This is when a person has less desires; there is action in inaction and all is relinquished. With this, one finds both mental and physical ease.

We should not be troubled by trivial, everyday matters and strive to attain what is called 'a mind that is neither content nor discontent’. In fact, the mind will not remain in a state of contentment. Neither will it be in constant discontentment as eventually it is appeased - just like how you wouldn’t be discontented when you get what you want, would you?

On 13 March 2021, Guan Yin Citta, Singapore held another *online English Group Study*. The session provided insights into the significance of the Shakyamuni Buddha's Renunciation Day and Guan Yin Bodhisattva's Birthday in commemoration of the upcoming special days. ???

The session started off with an account of the incredible life story of the Buddha that never loses its appeal in captivating the hearts of the devotees. ??

The facilitator presented a refresher revision on the following *core teachings of the Buddha*:
1️⃣ The truth of suffering,
2️⃣ Emptiness and impermanence, and
3️⃣ Roots of human suffering (desire, ignorance, attachment and impermanence).

? In a crystal clear message, Shakyamuni Buddha said, “The sentient beings of the six realms of rebirth will fall into the cycle of reincarnation due to ignorance. The *karmic causes and consequences are so dreadful that all sentient beings should not take them lightly*.

Echoing this, Master Lu once said, “*Since everything is an illusion, including this body of mine, where nothing belongs to me and everything is just on loan to me for a brief moment, why do I still covet this short-lived and illusory enjoyment?*”.

Both messages highlight the importance of practising Buddhism because regardless of what we do in this world, *we will eventually face the impermanence of life and death* and *all will reach the state of cessation*.

In the second part of the session, the facilitator presented the significance of Guan Yin Bodhisattva’s birthday, which falls on 31 March 2021. The participants were *recommended to perform more recitations, make more vows, perform more life liberations, make more prostrations, and accumulate more merits and virtues on this day*.

The participants were advised to recite the _Heart Sutra_ of Guan Yin Bodhisattva when prostrating or putting across their prayer requests. The _Heart Sutra_ is akin to a secret code that allows you to be connected to Bodhisattva.

In the upcoming session - scheduled on *3 April* - find out how *Dharma practice can help you develop skillful mind states that are free from Anger and Hatred (the second Poison in Buddhism teaching)*.

*Let us now look at some comments from participants:*
_Today's session was such a motivating one. I learnt the many troubles and obstacles the Buddha had to go through even though He has attained such profound enlightenment. I learnt that no one escapes karma, even our world honoured Lord Buddha. The only way we can be free from this illusionary world is through the teachings of the Buddha-Dharma._

_Guan Yin Bodhisattva's great compassion and mercy is our role model to survive in this Saha world. This session has motivated me to be more steadfast in my cultivation._
