*HOW DO WE ENSURE THAT WE ARE CAPABLE OF ENDURING HARDSHIP IN THIS WORLD*

Caller: Master, I feel that I am not quite able to endure hardship in this world. How do I better myself in this aspect?

Master Jun Hong Lu: We have to understand that hardship in life is a form of training. It is a type of self-mortification that leads us to gaining wisdom. The notion of suffering is merely an emotional experience; once it is over, it is gone.

Caller: I feel that the other Buddhist friends are more adapted to enduring hardships, but not me.

Master Jun Hong Lu: Your thoughts make you who you are. So, if you start to think otherwise, you will definitely be able to endure any hardship. No big deal! But, if you think, “Oh! I am not a person who can endure hardship”, one day if adversity truly strikes, you will not be able to take it. On the contrary, if you often tell yourself that, “I am all geared for any hardships”, you will be able to take it in your stride and do your utmost when adversities strike.

Caller: I understand now.

*SPREADING POSITIVE WORDS OR ENCOURAGING OTHERS TO PERFORM GOOD DEEDS ARE WAYS TO HELP OTHERS*

Question: If we often quote Master’s positive words in our conversations with friends, without the specific mention of Buddhism or making others aware of, would this considered a way to help others to awaken spiritually?

Answer: Of course, even if you ask him to perform some kind deeds, it’s also called helping others. Perform good deeds and do no evil.

Question: Is this also an act of Dharma Dana (i.e. sharing of the Buddha’s teachings)?

Answer: Certainly, as you are being kind to others. (Thank you Master for your advice.)

*HOW TO OBTAIN GOOD FORTUNE WITHIN THIS LIFETIME*

Caller: There is a proverb that goes, ‘If you want to know your past life, look at your present conditions. If you want to know your future life, look at your present actions’. We wish to perform more virtuous deeds in this world, but unfortunately, we are hindered by the lack of good fortune. Is there a way to hasten the materialisation of the blessings we have accumulated in this life, so that we do not have to wait for the blessings to materialise in future lives?

Master Jun Hong Lu: To achieve that, the deed that you perform must be massive and profound; it has to be formidable.

There are two types of karmic rewards or retributions that will take place within one’s lifetime:

One, is that you are an extremely good person, extremely kind, and the virtuous deeds you perform is extremely great. For this, karmic rewards will come about within this lifetime, you will see sudden improvement in many aspects of your life.

Another case being, someone who is not supposed to be executed by firing squad, but he continually commits bad deeds. Imagine a person who is supposed to live a long life, but because he does not take good care of his health, continuously does bad things, or messes around with relationships. Like the emperors in the olden days, they could have lived longer lives. But, they had so many concubines, that’s why most of them did not live to a ripe old age.

Two types of retributions or rewards materialise swiftly in the present life: either from committing extremely evil deeds, or from performing extremely good deeds. Since most of you are just average in doing both good and evil, you can only go along with your fate and destiny. To expect rewards within this lifetime for such minor kind deeds that you do, is impossible.

Caller: That means, if we wish to transform our fate and destiny, we will have to work hard to change ourselves.

Master Jun Hong Lu: Working hard is not enough. You have to work extremely hard. Only through dedication to progress, extreme hard work and doing your utmost will you get to enjoy karmic reward within one’s lifetime.

Caller: Thank you, Master.

*DO NOT BE ENTANGLED IN THE RIGHT AND WRONG OF THIS WORLD - HOW TO BREAK FREE FROM IGNORANCE?*

Master Jun Hong Lu: Like how I always tell you, the most important thing that a Buddhist practitioner should learn is to never allow yourself to be ‘entangled’. Things can be right and wrong in this world. A person who gets entangled in the web of right and wrong, is clearly someone who fails to cherish the brief life he lives in this world. That is why he continues to compete against others.

Think about how short your life is! You will have to be broad-minded, just like the sea. To achieve this, you will have to accord with conditions. The right and wrong in this world will only increase your afflictions, not wisdom.

How do we overcome ignorance? You have to be righteous. Like I always tell you, ‘With the right mindset, you let the Buddha be your guide; with a deviant mindset, you let the demons become your guide’.

How do we achieve a righteous mind then? You will have to fill yourself up with an everlasting positive energy. To do this you will have to have the line of thought of Bodhisattva, e.g., treat everyone with compassion.

*SPEND YOUR TIME WISELY*

A wise person will always use his spare time to work on his own future. For example, we should spend every bit of spare time we’ve got reciting sutras to protect ourselves from getting sick in the future, just as we spend our spare time exercising to stay healthy.

To acquire sustainable spiritual strength and success, we must use all our time to do what is necessary.

In every era, there are a great number of Bodhisattvas who have succeeded in their cultivation. The secret to their success is, when other people are indulging themselves in world enjoyments, they are quietly cultivating themselves, helping people realise the importance of spirituality, and giving a hand to those in need. When other people still cannot see through the true face of the world, those who want to be Bodhisattvas have already gained insights into the true meaning of life. Therefore, when others begin to suffer and think it is about time to start searching for what truly matters in life, those aspirers have already succeeded in their cultivation, becoming Bodhisattvas!

*LEARN TO REGULATE OUR MINDSET*

Master Jun Hong Lu: We must learn to regulate our own mindset. In this world, we cannot expect unhindered advancements or things to be as always. No matter what we do, the ability to regulate our mentality is key; we must learn to become wiser and understand the way to let go of our attachments. Life is impermanent, and nothing stays the same. Tomorrow is never promised and today is not guaranteed.

*KEY TO EFFICACIOUS PRAYER WHEN OFFERING FIRST INCENSE*

Question: What is the key to efficacious prayer when we are offering the First Incense in Chinese New Year Eve? Is it only efficacious when we make vows, perform recitation and virtuous deeds? If gastric diseases are considered spiritual diseases due to karmic obstacles, will our prayer for curing the diseases be efficacious? Since Bodhisattva does not intervene with the laws of cause and effect, what is the prerequisite for our prayer to be answered during the offering of the First Incense?
Answer: Sincerity can work wonders. Keep your mind empty, pray desperately and persistently, and your prayer may be answered on the same day.

*POWER OF ENDURANCE*

The utmost accomplishment in cultivation is one’s ability to endure, as our endurance is our greatest strength. If you wish for serenity and peace at home, you have to endure; if you wish for social safety, you have to learn to endure; if you wish to resolve troubles, you must learn to endure; only then you could survive in this world. Therefore, we have to adopt the wisdom of Buddha to resolve troubles in our daily lives. We ought to learn three methods in life: firstly, learn to admit our mistake; because after you have admitted, the mistake will no longer exist. Secondly, learn to be flexible, patient and accommodating. Thirdly, seek to understand and learn to let go.

*FENG SHUI THROUGH THE EARS*

Master Jun Hong Lu: One can observe feng shui through the ears. When the sounds that you hear are delightful to the ears and so very pleasant, the space that you are in has good feng shui.

For example, you feel the wonderful sound of the wind whistling from where you are.

When you befriend someone and you find that you are very receptive towards the things that he says, this is due to your karmic affinities with this person in your previous lifetimes. This explains why you tend to accept everything he says. It may be quite the opposite when you speak to someone else. You may find them unbearable as soon as they open their mouths and start talking to you. Hence, one’s ears can be their guide to detect negative feng shui.
