*THE MINDSET OF A PERSON IS VERY IMPORTANT*

Master Jun Hong Lu: The mindset of a person is very important. A wrong mindset may tarnish your image. With a unique line of thought, others will tend to form opinions about you. Symptoms of mental illness include having trouble thinking beyond oneself resulting in one being perceived as suffering from mental disorder. The same applies to how we lead our lives and cultivate Buddhism. Do not live your life muddleheaded, or drown yourself in unnecessary thoughts. If you see others in a bad light, over time, you will detach yourself from reality, and your spirituality and mental health may be affected.

*SUCCESS IN BUDDHIST CULTIVATION DEPENDS ON ONE’S DILIGENCE AND DETERMINATION, COUPLED WITH COMPASSION AND WISDOM*

Caller: There are two aspects to one’s success in Buddhist cultivation: diligence and determination coupled with compassion and wisdom. Is that correct, Master Lu?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Yes! It is important to be diligent as we have to embrace perseverance in cultivation. With regards to compassion and determination – when we are compassionate, we are able to overcome our hardships; and with determination, we become fearless. One who is keen on saving face will surely suffer. As a matter of fact, we should not be concerned about others losing respect for us if we are strong-minded. For example when you think, “I have set my mind on cultivating to become a Buddha”, there is no need to be concerned about others losing respect for us. In fact, we should not allow such concerns to have a negative impact on us.

Caller: That’s right, Master Lu, success in Buddhist cultivation requires firstly, diligence and determination, and secondly compassion and wisdom.

Master Jun Hong Lu: That’s how it is. We need compassion and wisdom, without the latter, do you think you will be successful?

Caller: That’s not possible. We should cultivate the Prajna wisdom of Bodhisattva.

Master Jun Hong Lu: That is correct.

*SEVEN REASONS WHY WE SHOULD NOT GET ANGRY*

1. We should never get angry as our anger will only exterminate the very last trace of rationality in us.

2. We should never get angry as our anger will ignite the excruciating sense of grievance deep inside us.

3. We should never get angry as our anger will destroy our normal course of life.

4. We should never get angry as our anger will engulf our last courage to forgive others in the end.

5. We should never get angry as our anger will only make matters worse.

6. We should never get angry as our anger will not hurt anyone else but ourselves, aggravating our pain and worsening our emotional distress.

7. We should never get angry as our anger will not make anyone see the truth; it only steers us back to the wrong behaviour which leads us to make the same mistake time and again.

*LEARN TO REGULATE OUR MINDSET*

Master Jun Hong Lu: We must learn to regulate our own mindset. In this world, we cannot expect unhindered advancements or things to be as always. No matter what we do, the ability to regulate our mentality is key; we must learn to become wiser and understand the way to let go of our attachments. Life is impermanent, and nothing stays the same. Tomorrow is never promised and today is not guaranteed.

Master Jun Hong Lu’s Discourse
(Question 256)
17 September 2018

*"MAY THERE BE MORE PREDESTINED SENTIENT BEINGS WHO ARE ABLE TO HEAR THE BUDDHA'S TEACHINGS"*

Question: When we pay respect to Bodhisattva, can we make the following prayer: “I wish that there will be more predestined sentient beings who are able to hear the Buddha’s Teachings, abandon sufferings and obtain happiness”. Is it proper to make wishes of this nature or are they considered too great?

Answer: This is an extremely commendable wish that everyone can make.

*CURB OUR DESIRES TO AVOID THE REGRETS OF TOMORROW*

Master Jun Hong Lu: As I often emphasise, life is like a one-way journey — from the small crib we had, to the small box that we get buried in when we pass on, and there is nothing we can take along with us. All that we may enjoy is the journey, but there is nothing we can keep a hold of throughout it. Hence, we must learn to prevail over our worries, and abandon our attachments.

In this world, wisdom stems from one’s mind. We need to transform ourselves and with haste, see through the nature of things and gain wisdom. There are so many people who are unable to let go of their attachments, constantly clinging to notions about their possessions throughout their life but ultimately, they are left with nothing. Hence, we need to curb our desires in order to avoid the regrets of tomorrow.
