Master Jun Hong Lu: To live in this world, we have to take advice from others. Although good medicine cures sickness, it is often unpalatable; likewise, sincere advice given for one’s well-being is often resented. Many people fail in their marriage and many others whom because of their attachments, experience lifelong sufferings without remedy. We must transform ourselves as after all, the essence of spiritual cultivation is about metamorphosis, where we change to become someone who is unlike our previous selves. It is because of our improper behaviour that cultivation of conduct becomes necessary. Likewise, because our way of thinking is unwholesome, where there is greed, hatred, ignorance, pride and doubt that cultivation of our mind is essential.

*BEING A BRAGGART WILL HURT OTHERS*
There are people saying, “There is nothing wrong with showing off and being proud of myself. I did nothing to hurt others, thus, why am I prohibited from boasting?”
A disciple said, “Master, bragging is just to show off oneself, no one is hurt in the process. Thus, why is it wrong to do so?” The master replied, “Do you know why we are unable to see stars during day time? This is because the extreme brightness from the sun outshines the brightness of the stars."
To our imagining mind, the brighter it is, the clearer our vision will be. It turns out, when the light is too bright, it is more likely to cloud our vision than darkness. It is as if we are blinded when exposed to extreme glare.” The master went on to say, “Bragging is akin to extreme brightness. When you brag, you will cast a shadow over others, deceive others and cause them to lose their confidence. As your strong light outshines the faint light of others, is it not hurting others?”

Master Jun Hong Lu: Yes, indeed. Although the main benefit of this practice is increasing one’s longevity.
Caller: Will there be the effect of dispelling calamities?
Master Jun Hong Lu: Yes. The longevity of one’s life comes along with the elimination of many calamities. In turn, one who meets with many calamities will not have a long lifespan.

Master Jun Hong Lu: Life is truly pitiable — things can either be smooth-sailing or go awry. Sometimes, one needs to be able to accept circumstances with good will. If we are able to do this, everything will go smoothly; otherwise, we will never be able to feel as though everything is going well.
In fact, life is all about how we feel and I hope that everyone will understand this. In life, we need to have accurate understandings, gain wisdom and comprehend the workings of this world.
Why are we still in this world today? It is because we have made our way to this human realm. I hope that everyone will put in their best effort as a true mind is a cultivated one.
Regardless of the endeavour, one will succeed if they are diligent, and the lack of this quality will bring about constant failure. Therefore as Buddhists, we must know good intentions can transform everything. In fact, we can never change others; we should first work diligently on our self-transformation instead.

*WHY SOME PRAYERS GET ANSWERED MORE SWIFTLY THAN OTHERS?*
Caller: There are some Buddhist friends who have been performing recitation for a few years, however their prayers remained unanswered. On the other hand, there are others whom had their prayers answered even though they had only performed recitation for merely a few months. What could be the reason for this since in both cases, their practices were the same, i.e. making great vows, performing recitation of Buddhist scriptures and performing life liberation. Even though the determination of the former group of people is relatively strong, they just do not seem to be able to succeed.
Master Jun Hong Lu: Let me quote you a simple example. Two people were down with colds. Both went to the hospital to receive jabs, but only one managed to bring his fever down. Can you tell me why?
Caller: Could it be that the condition of one was more serious than the other?
Master Jun Hong Lu: That’s right. One of them has weightier karmic obstacles. Secondly, one is in better health than the other.
Caller: I understand now. If they have yet to achieve what they set out to, that shows that they have to put in even more effort.
Master Lu: When the day comes that they succeed, others will think, “whoa! This person got his prayer answered so swiftly! Why is my prayer not answered till now?” The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.
Caller: I understand now. Thank you, Master Lu.
