STATS ChipPAC's new technology sees strong demand

STATS ChipPAC yesterday said that its more advanced semiconductor technology - unveiled two months ago - has seen strong demand and accelerated adoption across its customer base.
The chip maker said that its encapsulated Wafer Level Chip Scale Project (eWLCSP) solution, which is aimed at future electronics markets including space-constrained mobile devices and wearable technology, has made possible new benefits of superior quality, lower cost structure and ease of conversion for fan-in wafer level packaging.
WLCSP is one of the fastest growing segments in the semiconductor industry, driven by mobile electronics that require compact, high performance packages. But though a mature technology, there are concerns about the possibility of damage to the bare die package during the surface mount technology process, when components are mounted onto the surface of printed circuit boards.
STATS ChipPAC said its eWLCSP has a thin polymer case on the back and four side walls of the die, which, when compared to traditional bare die WLCSP, provides mechanical robustness and resistance to chipping, cracking and handling damage.

I have always thought this company would be taken over sometime, either by Temasek or other big semi conductor companies.
STATS is the 4th largest in the world by revenues for semiconductor, it serves big clients like Intel, TSMC, Marvell, Qualcomm, etc. and has been granted >1000 patents by US Patent, more than any other company in the industry (OSAT industry).

They are competing in an oligopoly market where top 4 accounts 80-90% of the outsourced substrate-based packaging services.
There is also a possible turnaround play since the company not long ago cut workforce, refinanced to get cheaper rate and terminated non performing assets (such as closing down unprofitable plant in Malaysia and consolidated it into its China operation which is cheaper).

I bought a bit at SGD 0.37. Right now it's probably trading fairly.

Chinese semiconductor companies said to weigh bids for stats

Chinese chip-testing companies Jiangsu Changjiang Electronics Technology Co. and Tianshui Huatian Technology Co. are considering bids for Singapore’s Stats Chippac, said people familiar with the matter.

The two companies are working on offers after unprofitable Stats Chippac, valued at $1.3 billion at yesterday’s close, said it had received takeover approaches, the people said. They asked not to be identified because the deliberations are confidential. A deal for Stats Chippac could be reached early next month, one of the people said.

Possibly.... but I thought this was supposedly old news, since the last approached was quite a while ago, and went dead after that.
