nowsadays no need to buy hardware already just host virtually can already.

Having physical boxes advantage is that your resources are dedicated disadvantage is heavy cost, rack space cost to host equipment a low tiered computer data center several hundred to 3k a month if including services like network security and backup and since it is physical it is traceable not a good idea if you trying to avoid that.

If you host virtually you are sharing resources with other people like bandwidth but paying lesser and it usually also comes with a package which includes things like mail security backup services to keep your site up and running and anytime you think somebody trying to "sniff you" out you have the flexibility relocate instantly to millions of hosting sites all over the world with physical hardware you need to engage transportation company to help you move or ship the equipment.

There's sites like http://www.hostpapa.sg/ only S$4.95 a month not sure how they even make any money or what their reliability or security is like but you get the picture how cheap it can be and easy to setup these days.

If there's a need to upgrade the bandwidth or server and in need of donation, I will be most willing to chip in too.

And I certainly hope this forum would not be bought over by SPH but remain as an independent forum regardless of the fact that many journalists and companies' directors are reading here as well.

agree with Lonewolf. Can the administrator please refrain from statements like:

"Thank you for the support and contribution these years in making the forum a great place for hangout. Thank you once again"

Maybe statements like "Thank you for the patience, we will be resume shortly... akan datang" will give us less heart attacks Big Grin

I really think a lot of us here don't mind chipping in to upgrade the infrastructure. I think we value the information here and we are value hunters Big Grin Do open a new thread and let us know Cyclone!

You can compare the quality of postings in SI before and after SPH took over.

What I hope is the quality of posting remain here. And if there are some membership fees, keep it affordable

When I read that message the thing that came to my mind was "was VB hacked?, especially considering that recently VB went down. Often security issues were overlooked as other innocuous issues. Close incidents like these may be resulted from outdated software that got exploited.

Hope cyclone can consider a simple resilient setup by creating a cron to backup the forum db every 3hrs, pipe to 7z then email/ssh out to another system. If a shadow forum is setup on another free hosting, all that is needed to be done is to restore db and change the dns setting to bring up the system. In fact if a cron runs on the shadow/backup forum, a swing could be completed within 5mins.

Agree with you on this!
If SPH willing to buy over VB, take it!
Afterall, how often do we come across a god-send Godfather.

Thereafter, set up another forum.
And after some years, if it gets repeated, wow, VB will be multi-bagger!

Forums don't move people, its people who move the forums!

Just joking lah!
