btw how do you guys see if a berkshire doing share buyback?

i tried to source for 2009 and 2000 share buy back in www.sec.gov also can't find.

Don't bother with this stock. It will be hard for it to outperform the market in the future.

Well at least until they start paying out dividends like a holding company / trust should, but that will probably when Warren is no longer around...

the thing i like about berkshire is because of no dividend .
we dont have capital tax, while we do get dividend taxed. i think it's a huge advantage for foreigner to buy berkshire compared to US citizens.

SPY got dividend.

At least u get some regular cashflow with spy.

And spy has exposure to Berkshire anyways.

And due to Berkshire size their growth is now pretty limited

This is a good read on future prospects of Berkshire. Even Warren has mentioned about this before..

[Also working against Berkshire is its growing size, a point Buffett has pointed out in the past. It has the fifth largest market capitalization on the S&P 500, behind only Apple, Alphabet, Microsoft, and Facebook. It also owns a vast assortment of subsidiaries, from home builders to car insurers to restaurants.

The net result is that Berkshire's annual returns theoretically should, and increasingly are, mirroring that of the economy and thus the broader market. Buffett has said this would happen. He's obviously right.]

So u are definitely not going to get a annual growth of 20% anymore but rather whatever the American economy grows by.

Hi Terry, you are not wrong; if all you want is to track US broader market performance, save on dividend Tax and maybe a chance at slight long term outperformance, Berkshire is not a bad bet.

Although Berkshire's alpha has been steadily narrowing, that's if you calculate S&P500 returns including dividends reinvested at 0 tax. Naturally, as Singaporeans, we would do far better with Berkshire shares than S&P500 if we are holding for the long term.

Berkshire has not been buying back shares for a long time because whenever it announces that it wants to buyback, it share price will go up because people fighting to buy also. Its most recent buyback was a few years ago when Buffett says it will actively buyback if the stock is priced at 110% of NAV.

Warren Buffett set to pick up stake in Paytm
Paytm has been in talks with Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway since early February to raise about ₹ 2,200- 2,500 crore at a valuation of about $10-12 billion

New Delhi: Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc. is set to buy a small stake in One97 Communications Ltd, the parent of Paytm, making it the billionaire investor’s first investment in an Indian company, according to two people aware of the development. Paytm, India’s largest payment services provider, has been in talks with Berkshire Hathaway since early February to raise about ₹ 2,200- 2,500 crore ($300-350 million) at a valuation of about $10-12 billion, the two people cited above said on condition of anonymity.

An email to Berkshire Hathaway did not elicit a response. A Paytm spokesperson did not respond to an email seeking comment.

The deal, which is likely to be announced within the next two weeks, will be Berkshire Hathaway’s first investment in the country’s buzzing startup ecosystem. It will also be the company’s first investment in a privately-held technology company in the world. In the past, Berkshire Hathaway has selectively invested in some publicly listed tech companies, most notably International Business Machines (IBM) Corp. and Apple. Berkshire recently exited IBM, but still owns Apple stock.

In May, several publications reported that Berkshire Hathaway tried to invest in ride-hailing firm Uber. However, the talks were not successful.

Buffett, known as the Oracle of Omaha, did set up Berkshire India in 2011 and partnered with Bajaj Allianz to sell insurance. However, Berkshire exited the partnership two years later, citing excessive regulation, according to a CNN report.

They have grown so big and full of $$ that they need to diversify and go into other industries. First they went into all the american airlines. then went into Apple in a big way. So no surprise if they build up their portfolio of tech companies.

Uber  is on path to profitability with new CEO likely to become profitable in the next couple years. Their losses each quarter is now getting less and less.

Also uber is private investors only and easier for berkshire to cut a good deal.
