SINGAPORE--Singapore Telecommunications Ltd. (Z74.SG) is partnering the Al Noor Group to distribute satellite-based technology and services in Myanmar, the Singapore government said Thursday.

Under the pact, Singapore-based Al Noor--one of the largest importers of mobile phones in Myanmar--will help SingTel sell satellite phones, broadband internet and broadcasting services in Myanmar, the city-state's trade-promotion agency, International Enterprise Singapore, said in a statement.

SingTel and Al Noor officials signed the deal this week in Yangon, during a visit as part of a Singapore government-led business delegation.

SingTel, Southeast Asia's largest telecommunications firm by revenue, is currently vying for a telecommunications license in Myanmar, which began a process this year to issue two permits as part of efforts to liberalize the tightly controlled sector.

If SingTel gets this license to operate in Myanmar, it will be a positive fundamental upgrade for SingTel intrinsic value and push its stock price upwards.

SingTel consortium shortlisted for Myanmar telecom licence tender

YANGON — Myanmar has shortlisted 12 international consortia, including one led by Singapore Telecommunications, for the final stage in its telecommunications licence tender.

The shortlisted applicants can now formally bid for the two licences, each with initial terms of 15 years. Bids must be submitted by June 3, and the winners will be announced by June 27.

Shortlisted applicants include a consortium comprising China Mobile and Vodafone Group. India’s Bharti Airtel, MTN Dubai, Jamaica’s Digicel Group, Japan’s KDDI Corp and Sumitomo Corp, Malaysia’s Axiata Group, Norway’s Telenor, Millicom International Cellular, Qatar Telecom and Vietnam’s Viettel Group also made the list.

The bidding has attracted wide interest from international telecoms firms, which see huge opportunities in a country of 60 million where mobile penetration is just 5 to 10 per cent.

Optus Business has today announced a five year, $60 million contract with Suretek, for the delivery of fixed network and high-speed mobile services.

The deal will also support Suretek in the delivery of new capabilities and an improved customer experience in the Asia-Pacific region. Suretek is a specialist provider of security solutions including wireless alarm communications, remote video-monitoring and redundancy solutions.
