Telcos Expand Financial Services in Cooperation with Local Banks

Regarding grab-Singtel (6:4) winning digital banking license, I believe it will go to a money burning stage a little more before the earnings will be reflected on the bottom line. Regardless, good development for Singtel/ telco finally. In the era of amt of data & user base (paying or not) can be taken into valuation, Singtel was not valued in such manner.

Part of the reasons, is they have been struggling to monetize their user-base; which is also shrinking in recent years (TPG, MVNOs etc.).
Consumer sector wise, I think "struggling" is a really kind word to describe Singtel effort in getting more revenue from same user (ARPU).
(Vested. Still see a future in it esp the enterprise side).

Singtel really has to see itself more than a "telco" but how it could deliver values to more consumer needs. Value added services by Singtel to consumer tend be add-ons to its telco services - many can't stand on its own.

Contrast that to Grab, Gojek or other super app.  These super apps are offering what a shopping malls used to offer.

I tikam the future for telco will be more infrastructure-like with owner operators separation with appropriate level of control by gov due to higher infra cost. It may be some thing like fibre-network or the energy market.
If that happens, customer facing operators would need to up their service game, and rely much less on extracting revenue from the infrastructure.

My thoughts on Singtel summarized:
Near term 3-5 years will be bad, a lot of money will go into investing in its digital bank and the 5G network. Profits MAY come in after the development stage, a lot of pain before profits are reaped. Looking to exit for now and maybe come back in 2-3 years when the direction of the 2 big investments are more visible.

Note: 5G network is on higher frequency wavelength than 4G network. The cost of building up the 5G network is going to be much more costly than that of the 4G network due to the 2 main reason:
1) 5G network needs much more nodes than 4G network.
2) 5G technology in itself is much more costly due to the complexity, higher demand and lower supply.

SingTel reorg

Keppel reorg makes a lot of sense.
It came with a 100 days playbook which shown results almost immediately.
It's clear that Keppel (and it's shareholders) will reap the benefits of having an exceptionally aggressive topgun!

SingTel reorg - how can Moon hasten it's changes?
It's not clear and given that Moon is groomed from the rank, we shouldn't expect too much changes.

Is 5G really a game changer or is it more like a national services?

The reference is made to the legal dispute thatCAT Telecom Public Company Limited (“CAT”) submitted to the Alternative Dispute Resolution Office, the Arbitration Institute, Court of Justice on January 31, 2018, referring to the Agreement for operations regarding cellular telecommunication services between CAT and Digital Phone Co., Ltd. (“DPC”), the subsidiary company of Advanced Info Service PLC. (“ the Company” or “AIS”) which has already expired. Under the dispute, CAT demands DPCto transferthe ownership of telecom equipment consists of 4,657 telecommunication towers, 3,012 containers, power supply, mobile number portability system and call center system which DPC collectively used with AIS. The total claim is 13,431 million Baht and an additional claim for opportunity loss of 116 million Baht per month plus default interest rate at 7.5% per annum.

The Company would like to inform that DPC has received the Arbitration Committee resolution which resolved to dismiss the CAT’s dispute. As a result, DPC is not obliged to transfer telecom equipment nor make payment for any claim by CAT. However, CAT is eligible to file a petition to the Central Administrative Court to revoke the Arbitration’s resolution within 90 days. Should there be any further significant update, the Company will inform accordingly.

On 2 November 2020, Optus announced that it had entered into a purchase agreement with amaysim to acquire its mobile business for $250 million. Shareholders of amaysim approved the transaction at an extraordinary general meeting on 21 January 2021.

“For Optus, the acquisition of amaysim cements our leadership in the MVNO market and allows us to offer customers another compelling option to connect via our world-class mobile network,” said Ms Bayer Rosmarin.

Anyone is still vested in Singtel?

The CEO is kitchen sinking everything.

The strategic restructuring that is going to be announced should lean towards what we had seen from Sembcorp, Capitaland which should unlock some value.

Thoughts?

Used to own it.

Chances are that both the acquisitions will be nett value destruction.

However, it looks like the write-down is only partial.

My guess is that it is the early stages of kitchen sink, maybe one CEO later and three years down the road, they will write these off completely.
