Singtel to provide cyber-security to maritime industry via Inmarsat

SINGAPORE Telecommunications (Singtel) has entered into a strategic partnership with Inmarsat to enhance maritime cyber-security using Trustwave's Unified Threat Management (UTM) solution.
Trustwave, which was recently acquired by Singtel, is the cyber-security arm of the telco. It will provide the software-based UTM service to be integrated with Inmarsat hardware onboard ships, to protect data and reduce cyber risk for maritime companies.
According to Singtel, the UTM service offers a suite of cyber-security defences, such as advance firewall, anti-virus, intrusion prevention and Web filtering, which is backed by global round-the-clock support.
It will be delivered through Fleet Xpress, a high-speed broadband solution for maritime and offshore operators, available from a single communications provider.

Singtel seems to be morphing slowly into a tech company. Probably just in time to spearhead Singapore's transformation into a 'Smart Nation' in the years to come.....
Starhub and M1 seem to be following a different expansion/growth path from Singtel. They go for more collaborations and tie-ups with other companies. Probably due to a lack of financial muscle IMO.
This service, is better than app-based voice call, proposed by MR. One more backup for the VoLTE call. M1 and Starhub will offer similar service, soon after...

Better from which/whose perspective? For consumers, how is this different from Whatsapp or Wechat calls? For SingTel, is this another revenue stream? Does commercial means ST will charge users?
In Singtel's case, I thnk voice-over-WiFi is part of the heterogeneous network where traffic can be seamlessly routed between Wifi and mobile networks to optimise the bandwidth. That is to say, if you are currently on a voice call (mobile network) and you step into a area with weak mobile network coverage but stronger WiFi coverage, the system hands over the call to the cell with the stronger coverage. I presume if you are on a Whatsapp call, once the data network signal gets cut off or you are handed over to a non-data network, your call is terminated.
I am using 3 mobile 4G plan here in the UK. This company has an app that allows me to receive calls/sms over a WiFi network where the mobile coverage is very weak or non-existent. Minutes/text messages are deducted from my allowances if made over the WiFi network. To my knowledge, they do not have a het network where I can transit seamlessly between the two.

A local B2C platform? I am yet to go into the detail. The platform needs supporting services e.g. low-cost payment and logistic service to compete, IMHO...

TPG Telecom & Singtel continue battle in Australia’s telco arena

SINGAPORE (April 12): After successfully securing its position as Singapore’s fourth mobile entrant late last year, TPG Telecom is now eyeing the prized spot as Australia’s fourth mobile operator as well.
The Australian telecommunications and IT company recently secured 2x10 MHz for A$1.26 billion ($1.32 billion, A$2.75/MHz/population) at the last Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) 700 MHz spectrum auction, where it bid against competing telcos Singtel Optus and Vodafone Hutchinson Australia (VHA) in early April.
While VHA secured 2x5 MHz at the reserve price of A$285.9 million, which averages to A$1.25/MHz/population, Optus participated in but did not secure any of spectrum from the latest auction round.
“The entry of TPG Telecom introduces a fourth mobile operator in Australia. It also means that Singtel has to compete with TPG in both Singapore and Australia,” comment UOB Kay Hian analysts Jonathan Koh and Jasmine Duan in an e-mail note on Wednesday.
Looks like they overpaid, big win for the Aussie govt.
"Industry insiders were shocked by the price for the two times 10 MHz purchase, saying it was among the most expensive spectrum bought anywhere in the world.
Vodafone meanwhile secured two times 5 MHz for $285.9 million, the Australian Communications and Media Authority said, while Optus emerged from the auction empty-handed."
If Optus does not get any spectrum, does it mean it has to pay other networks to continue operation or can it use its existing old spectrum to continue?
