GRP will be holding its AGM on Oct 28, 2011 at 10 a.m. at JCC. A pertinent question though - why are Directors' Fees so much higher at $250,000 for FY 2011 as compared to $131,000 for FY 2010? Profits are more or less flat and dividend per share has remained at 2 cents.

Yes, interesting indeed. I sold out quite some time ago as the old Management was literally going nowhere with the Company (headed by Han Hai Kwang).

Apparently, there is now renewed optimism with Gazelle coming in (as indicated by the increased volumes and higher share price of around 20-20.5c), and let's hope they know what they are doing and have good plans and strategies to grow the Company. If not, investors may have to hang on for deer life (pun intended)!

ACQUISITION OF 12.7% SHAREHOLDING IN APHRODITE GOLD LIMITED

Extract: Aphrodite is an Australian gold mining company listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (“ASX”). Aphrodite’s main project is the Aphrodite Gold Project, which is located 65km north of Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, giving it access to excellent infrastructure in the region and proximity to nearby treatment plants.

The Project comprises mainly of five granted mining leases totaling over 30 square kilometers of land and the deposit contains a Joint Ore Reserves Committee (“JORC”) resource estimate of 1.04 million ounces. Aphrodite has recently completed a positive scoping study affirming its potential to become a cost competitive producer with a project NPV of AUD129 million at current gold prices. There is also significant potential to increase production and mine life as resources expand. Recent drilling programs have returned with excellent results with a peak gold value of 168.66 grams/tonne over a one meter interval. Aphrodite is progressing with their pre-feasibility study and targets production by year 2014.

I used to be vested in GRP and I saw the announcement last week. Didnt think to read too much into it when I saw that they were buying a GOLD mining company.

Isn't gold the hype of the decade at this moment? So is the Company embarking on a prudent, strategic purchase or merely jumping on the latest bandwagon to chase higher returns?

Haven't been vested in a long time either.
But seeing how they're investing in a gold miner which isn't really their expertise. Maybe it's a good thing I'm no longer vested.
If they have too much money and don't know what to do with it, they can always return it to shareholders.

I have a question. Seeing how some SGX-listed companies have gone into Gold Mining...does it say something about what kind of phase of the investment cycle gold as an asset class is in?
