We must confess when we have done something wrong because trustworthiness is of great importance. Confessing our mistakes indicates our awakening. Concealing our mistakes will lead to more blunders.

EVERYTHING IS ARRANGED IN THE BEST POSSIBLE WAY

There comes a time in our life’s journey when we find that the cold freezing rain of exercise is beyond our level of endurance. We should then learn Buddhism, practise patience under humiliation, dedicate ourselves to progress, and last but not least, wait. Life is like a giant tree sheltering us from the storm. As long as we put in our best efforts, slowly but surely success will come to us. We may not see an immediate result from our efforts, but with a little patience, often it will come to us when we least expect it.

When we are faced with adversities, when everything seems to be going against us – our relationship, job, career, and shattered dreams when we have reached total desperation, try seeing things from a different perspective. Everything is arranged in the best possible way. *Disaster and happiness are twins.* Behind every disaster, there is a drop of happiness. There is always a hidden part of happiness where disaster may be sitting just on the horizon.

*WHAT DOES “LETTING GO” MEANS TO A LAY PRACTITIONER?*

Caller: Buddhism teaches “To see through the reality of things and let go”. What it means is that we should not have any concern for all the worldly things, we are supposed to let go and lead a life of asceticism. But, how about lay practitioners like us? We still have a life to live, to earn a living and support our family. How can we practise “Seeing through and letting go?”

Master Jun Hong Lu: Please remember. Do not go any further than necessary, be it work, thoughts or even your intake of food, as long as you don’t need to starve. What’s letting go? When you go overboard, and you want everything in life, it means you have yet to practise letting go. Do you understand?

Caller: Thank you, Master.

Pray to Guan Yin Bodhisattva when encountering difficulties
Master Jun Hong Lu’s Dharma Talk at the Guan Yin Temple
An Excerpt

Guan Yin Bodhisattva, the most compassionate among the Buddhas. As a representation of a compassionate saviour, Guan Yin Bodhisattva alleviates those in pain with great mercy and compassion. When you are faced with difficulties, you should first pray to Guan Yin Bodhisattva, as she will always relieve sentient beings from pain and suffering. During the time of Shakyamuni Buddha, He told the sentient beings to pray to Guan Yin Bodhisattva.

Shakyamuni Buddha said, “Guan Yin Bodhisattva attained Buddhahood countless eons ago.” She attained Buddhahood before Shakyamuni Buddha. She manifests the form of a Bodhisattva out of her great compassion and readiness to save sentient beings. Among all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, Guan Yin Bodhisattva is the symbol of compassion.

Every Bodhisattva made different vows that led them to attaining Buddhahood. For example, Guan Yin Bodhisattva embodies great compassion, Manjushri Bodhisattva embodies great wisdom, Samantabhadra Bodhisattva embodies great practice, and Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva embodies great vows. As all Bodhisattvas made different vows and are unique in their own ways, you should never make comparisons among Bodhisattvas.

The Bodhisattvas possess complete and perfect wisdom; but they only differ in their power of vow. During His time, Shakyamuni Buddha also advised those in pain to recite the holy name of Guan Yin Bodhisattva. We have every reason to do the same.

*WHAT MONEY CAN’T BUY*

Master Jun Hong Lu: Money may buy you medicine but cannot buy you life;

money may buy you insurance but cannot buy you safety;

money may buy you temporary joy but cannot buy you happiness;

money may buy you material goods but cannot buy you contentment;

money may buy you a marriage but cannot buy you love;

money may buy you supplements but cannot buy you health.

*SAMANTABHADRA BODHISATTVA’S FIRST GREAT VOW: PAY HOMAGE TO ALL BUDDHAS*

Master Jun Hong Lu: The first great vow is to pay homage to all Buddhas. To pay homage means to have a heart of deference. With great respect, your mind contemplates, your body bows and your mouth praises. It is because you venerate Guan Yin Bodhisattva, that is why you prostrate to Her; the same goes when you put your palms together when you see me, your Master, it is because you have great respect for me.

All these will come naturally when you have a heart of deference. Therefore, Buddhist practitioners must understand the significance of great respect.

*ABSENCE OF RESENTMENT IN A TRUE BUDDHIST PRACTITIONER*

Caller: I am one of Master Lu’s followers. However, I still harbour feelings of resentment and vengeance within every time I encounter a difficult situation. Why is this so?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Everything happens as a result of karma. A true Buddhist practitioner is one who is compassionate and able to forget the shortcomings of others. If you are compassionate, you should not hate others. If you still harbour thoughts of resentment and vengeance, it shows that you are still lacking in your cultivation. We can only try our best to advise people who we have lower expectations of, not to hate others.

Resentment cannot resolve your problems but will only hurt you. For example, say you hate a person to the core and eventually get them landed in jail for five years. When they almost complete his jail term, you would be terrified, as you would be unable to anticipate what they will do to seek revenge against you after their release from prison. Such torment will go on forever. Therefore, a true Buddhist practitioner must not hate others. Let bygones be bygones and you will be able to avoid a disaster.

*SACRIFICE OURSELVES FOR THE SAKE OF OTHERS*

Master Jun Hong Lu: As Buddhist practitioners, we must recognise that life is more than eating good food, sleeping in a comfortable bed, or having a stable job – life is more than just repeating mundane tasks in order to acquire money to sustain our lifestyle.

The greatness of human beings is in our ability to create and live a life to serve other sentient beings; as serving others is what makes them great. Hence, we must relinquish the smallness of self in order to serve the broader collective, to sacrifice ourselves for the sake of others, learning from the spirit of Guan Yin Bodhisattva who responds to every plea.

In all things, care not about fulfilling the insignificant personal wishes. Instead, pray only for the liberation of sentient beings.
