ANY SEED SOWN WILL NOT GERMINATE INSTANTLY

When you treat someone well, they may not be quick to requite; when you pray to Bodhisattva, and perform recitation, your health may not improve immediately. When this happens, many may start to complain that Bodhisattva is inefficacious.

Please remember, any seed sown will not germinate instantly. When we treat others well but our kindness is not being reciprocated, misunderstandings will develop and wrong decisions will be made, which will end up wrecking a harmonious relationship. Compassion is the best antidote. Have faith in others and be thankful. Only then you will experience true contentment and bliss.

We must be sincere when we pray to Bodhisattvas.
When Bodhisattvas are moved by our sincerity, they are sure to help us.
Selfish people will not receive the protection and blessings from Bodhisattvas and Dharma Protectors.

RECITATIONS OF BUDDHIST SUTRAS CAN ELIMINATE 8 BILLIONS OF LIFE AND DEATH CATASTROPHES

If you are constantly performing recitations throughout your life, you will be able to eliminate eight billions of life and death catastrophes. The recitations is not limited to just chanting ‘Amitabha’; it also includes recitations of sutras and mantras. When one hears the numeric quantifier – ‘billion’, does it appear to be plentiful? In other words, a person who spends all his life performing recitations of scriptures will be able to dispel many calamities. Do you think disasters and difficulties will befall upon one who recites scriptures throughout his life? In the past, the nuns and monks who renounced their commoners’ lifestyle at a very young age and they did their recitations in the temples all their lives, did they encounter any calamity in the temples? Just take a look at how much sufferings and calamities we have to endure in the Human Realm. Therefore, Dharma is indubitable. Although you may have committed many bad deeds in your past lives, however, if you are able to offer your prayers and perform recitations and repent sincerely like the monks and nuns; your grievous sins will gradually be dispelled. For example, to those young Buddhist friends from the Secretariat Department; if they had committed many bad deeds in their past lives; be it in lifestyles, careers or family lives, and if they begin to perform recitations and repentances as well as amassing merits in the Guan Yin Hall daily now, what calamities would befall them? This is how many of the impending disasters are being resolved

FOUR THINGS WE SHOULD NOT WASTE OUR LIVES ON

We know that we should not waste our lives away and here are 4 things in particular that we should not waste our lives on:

Number 1: Our worries. Worries are an ultimate waste of our lives. It is all much ado about nothing. To worry is to make things harder than they need to be. Why get over-anxious for problems that we are unable to resolve, get uptight every day and wear ourselves out both physically and mentally? Resultantly, you will definitely fall ill.

Number 2 : Do not waste time on complaining. Please remember, all unnecessary complaints will only keep you away from happiness. Complaints are downright useless, as it is unable to help you out of any life’s predicament.

Number 3: Do not waste time on blaming others. To blame others as soon as something happened, to suffer and feeling unhappy thereafter, to blame the circumstances when things are not to our liking – these are negative and passive attitudes in life. From the perspective of Dharma, these are known as negative energies; and a mentality lacking in self-confidence and ability to undertake responsibilities.

Number 4: Do not compare with others, as it is an utter waste of time. The more you compare, the more unhappy you will be. Being joyful and happy are personal feelings. They are not derived from our comparison with others.

(Question 398)

*DO NOT HOLD GRUDGES, LETTING GO IS THE ONLY WAY*

Question: Master Lu, you mentioned before that if we hate someone, we will bear the karmic obstacles of the person we hate, and the said party will take away a portion of our merits and virtues. Can you enlighten us on this?

Answer: When you hate a person, isn't there something bad about him that you are hating? As you hold grudges in your heart, the karmic obstacles will enter your heart, and thus you will bear them.

While you hate his shortcomings, his karmic obstacles and his wrongdoings, you will bring all these upon yourself. Hence, the more you hate, the more harm you are causing yourself.

Many people lack wisdom, they just don't get it. Here you are, hating such a person when he doesn't even know it, while you keep all the hatred in your heart - grinding your teeth, feeling broken-hearted, losing your appetite and sleep. And, you end up having all his karmic obstacles transferred to you.

Why should you care about such a bad person? Let go and throw it out of your mind! There are bound to be many who will hurt you throughout your life. If you take all of them to heart, how can you survive with such petty mind? Letting go is the only way!

*APPLY BUDDHISM IN DAILY LIFE*

Master Jun Hong Lu:
The Dharma is hard to come by and the chance to be born a human is rare. Even though we have such a good opportunity to be a human, it is only for a limited time.

Those who fail to let go will definitely suffer. Therefore, Buddhist practitioners should seize the opportunity to study the teachings and cultivate their minds.

In the Buddhist scriptures, it is said that though it is crucial for one to “interpret” the teachings, what’s more important is the cultivation of one’s behaviour.

There are many Buddhist practitioners who are good at reciting the scriptures and their understanding of the Buddha’s teachings is superb. However, their behaviour is not even close to that of a human; all that they learn, they fail to put it into practice. In the end all their efforts in cultivation comes to nothing.

Therefore, the Dharma teaches the unity of knowledge and action (i.e., the congruence of one’s knowledge and actions). To truly understand the Dharma is to comprehend the teachings in one’s heart and be able to apply the Dharma in one’s life - this is the true understanding of spiritual cultivation.

*HOW DO WE BRING ABOUT HEARTFELT REPENTANCE?*

Caller: How do we bring about heartfelt repentance?

Master Jun Hong Lu: You need to be honest and feel a sense of remorse when you repent. However, this is only possible if you know the root of your misconduct. If you don’t have any insights about the transgression, it will be impossible to ignite a sense of sincerity in your act of repentance. What do we mean by ‘heartfelt’? *Heartfelt repentance only comes about if we understand the severity of our negative behaviour, and how it was contrary to our principles*. This needs to be coupled with *the determination to not commit the same mistakes again*.

Caller: I understand.

*LIFE IS A TRAIN OF NO RETURN*

Master Jun Hong Lu: Life is like a train of no return.

Our kin and friends are like the travellers who board and deboard.

No one will be there to trek the entire life journey with us.

Hence, be grateful for those who have kept us company, cherish the affinities, understand the working of karma, see through the reality of things and last but not least, learn to let go.

Only then, will we be able to gain wisdom and dharma joy in this fleeting life.

*SEE THROUGH THE EMPTINESS OF THE MATERIAL WORLD*

Master Jun Hong Lu: We have to see through the emptiness of the material world as it is transient. We have to realise that life is impermanent, as the most beautiful body is nothing but a mortal. The most touching love story is nothing but a predestined affinity that meets and parts.

Hence, face life tribulations with a smile. We must understand that all things are in a state of constant change and our heart is immeasurable. Life’s trials and tribulations can only make us more mature. It takes strong faith to practice Buddhism to support the purity of the spiritual space in us.
