*Three ways to avoid being angry*

*When someone in your family is angry, the first thing you should do is learn to stay away. * For many people, their first reaction is to talk back to their wives or husbands and then get into a heated exchange with each other. In fact, just like if a house is on fire, the very first thing you should do is to flee the scene. You can find a way to put out the fire afterwards. Thus, staying away is a good approach.

*The second approach is diversion of attention. * When a family member is having a fit of anger, you can either change the subject or take the spouse out on a shopping trip.

*Thirdly, learn to resolve the conflicts. * When you get scolding from the other party, you shouldn’t retaliate. Instead, you should find a friend and sit down for a talk. There is no smoke without fire. There must be some reason why the wife loses her temper or the husband is unhappy.

*Understanding the working of karma helps elevate a person’s state of mind. *

*View someone’s wrath against you as an opportunity to make you a better person. *

*It helps you identify your weaknesses. In this way, you’ll be able to rectify your shortcomings and learn to control your emotions. Whoever can control their emotions is already a winner.*

*AN INGENIOUS WAY SHARED BY MASTER JUN HONG LU ON HOW TO DEAL WITH DIFFICULT SITUATIONS BY COOLING OFF FOR SIX (6) SECONDS*

Based on research done by psychologists, before information enters into the consciousness of the brain and is stored as knowledge / experiences in our brain, it will have to be first processed by the part of human brain that controls our emotions, which is among the most ancient of human brain’s limbic systems.

Whenever we encounter a situation, the brain’s limbic system will be the first to react. This explains why we develop feelings like fear, anger, and joy towards the situation. Thus, the information acquired from the situation will not reach our conscious mind until six seconds later. From there, our brain will process the information and translate it into our knowledge of the situation. Essentially, impulsiveness is the act of a primitive person while careful deliberation is the act of a civilized person.

Therefore, in today’s world, many of us have committed crimes and did something awfully detrimental to our family in a moment of impulse. To help us break away from impulsiveness, we have to make use of our civilized sense of rationality.

The fact is, whenever you encounter a situation, you should cool down for six seconds. At times when you are unable to curb your temper and are tempted to resort to violence, you have to exercise control, take a few deep breaths for six seconds, recite Jvala Mahaugra Dharani (Xiao Zai Ji Xiang Shen Zhou) once, and you will free yourself from yet another worry and difficulty.

*HOW DOES THE _HEART SUTRA_ HELP GAIN WISDOM?*

Caller: How does the _Heart Sutra_ help one gain wisdom? Has it to do with the quantity that one recites, or is it because Bodhisattva hears my recitation and blesses me as a result? Could it even be the words in the Buddhist scripture itself that have deepened my understanding?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Firstly, the _Heart Sutra_ originates from Guan Yin Bodhisattva. It is hard for humans to thoroughly understand the scriptures of Bodhisattvas. It is just like a university education - many things are not under our own control. For instance, a professor wishes to teach us a formula. For starters, you may not wish or need to learn its derivation, but as long as you apply the formula, you are able to solve all challenging problems.

Secondly, when you recite the _Heart Sutra_, your mind and that of Guan Yin Bodhisattva meld into one. As you contemplate how Guan Yin Bodhisattva answers all prayers and possesses such immense energy, recitation of the _Heart Sutra_ allows you to unravel the binds within your mind. In fact, your recitation allows you to have a spiritual resonance with Guan Yin Bodhisattva’s energy field. It is that sort of feeling.

Caller: Does it mean that Guan Yin Bodhisattva’s blessings enable one to gain wisdom faster?

Master Jun Hong Lu: That’s for sure! Why is it that people wish to find a master? A university textbook can be easily obtained, but if you do not receive lectures and tutorials from a professor, will you be able to graduate?

Buddhism in Plain Terms
Volume 1 - Chapter 10 (An Excerpt)

*HOW TO PREVENT KARMIC OBSTACLES FROM COMING INTO BEING*

Master Jun Hong Lu: The second tool to prevent karmic obstacles from arising is to have “a heart of gratitude”. The sense of gratitude referred to here is not only a state-of-mind but also a tool, a cultivation method.

With regard to humanity’s mass of desires (Seven Emotions and Six Sensory Pleasures), every passion and desire brings forth karmic obstacles which can only be severed through a heart of gratitude.

While gratitude is the only emotional response that is able to prevent the formation of karmic obstacles, it is also an effective weapon against greed, hatred and ignorance.

As you gradually adopt a heart of gratitude in dealing with the people and matters around you, your karmic obstacles will lessen accordingly.

*EXPLAIN WHEN NECESSARY BUT DO NOT OVERDO IT*

Caller: Master Lu, how do Buddhist practitioners put into practice “Not explaining is the best explanation”? Is it possible to achieve this through actions in order to remove all vexations?

Master Jun Hong Lu: *You still have to explain when necessary. However, do not overly explain. It suffice when you make your point clear.* It’s now the Age of Dharma Decline, not the Age of the Right Dharma, during which explanation was not needed as self-realisation prevailed in everyone: when you stop talking, the other party will follow suit as he will be immediately enlightened. Nowadays people get confused easily, therefore you have to explain when the need arises.

Caller: If we would like to resolve everything in a non-confrontational manner…

Master Jun Hong Lu: It’s impossible. For example, your husband suspects that you are having an affair, what happen if you do not explain and remain silent? He will be very angry at you. It’s that simple. Can you afford not explaining under such circumstances?

Caller: We still have to explain when necessary, otherwise it will deepen the misunderstanding.

Master Jun Hong Lu: People today are different from people in the past. Their morality and standards have deteriorated.

*TALKING ABOUT OTHERS BEHIND THEIR BACK IS AN ACT OF SOWING DISCORD; REPENT BY RECITING THE EIGHTY-EIGHT BUDDHAS GREAT REPENTANCE*

Shuohua20160805 29:26 [Master Jun Hong Lu’s call-in radio program]

Caller: Some Buddhist friends have issues with persons-in-charge of Dharma practice centre because of their approaches / ways of doing things, and started to discuss about their ideas and opinions behind their back. Is this considered an act of sowing discord?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Yes, as long as you have stirred things up, you are considered to have sowed discord.

Caller: How severe is the karmic obstacles caused by such behaviour?

Master Jun Hong Lu: It depends, if you keep on sowing discord among others, it will surely be very serious and would end up in hell. However, it would not be a big issue if you only happened to do it by chance, just repent by reciting the Eighty-eight Buddhas Great Repentance (Li Fo Da Chan Hui Wen).

Caller: I see, how many times shall we recite the Eighty-eight Buddhas Great Repentance in this case?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Keep reciting.

Caller: Continue to recite until there is no more sense of guilt?

Master Jun Hong Lu: That's right.

*WHAT SHOULD WE DO WHEN WE CAN'T SEEM TO THINK THINGS THROUGH?*

Caller: Master Lu, when we are troubled and can't seem to think things through, reciting the name of Guan Yin Bodhisattva is the quickest solution, besides reciting Heart Sutra and studying Buddhism in Plain Terms?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Yes, you should remove yourself from your current environment, get up and move around. As a person moves around, any brooding thoughts will instantly be thrown into disarray and his initial train of thought would be disrupted. In psychology, it is regarded as to have his spiritual support shaken up. At time, he was concerned with the urge to pick a quarrel with someone due to the anger over the words said. However, once he stands up and walks around, his attention would be disrupted, and this would effect a change leading to the change in his earlier attitude.

Caller: Thank you Master Lu.

Kindness is the foundation for a heart of compassion.
Repentance is the only route towards self-reform.
Contrition is the only way for one to make headway.
Diligence is the only way to success.
Gratitude is the only way to contentment.
