*DILIGENT CULTIVATION CAN CHANGE OUR DESTINY*

Master Jun Hong Lu: As Buddhist practitioners, we know that practising Buddhism allow us to have the capability to control our mood, temperament as well as our fate and destiny.

We sympathise with those whom we see fly into a rage often, as they are just like wild horses that have lost their reins and will only cause injury to themselves.

Therefore, as Buddhist practitioners, we should not argue with others but cultivate our behaviour with diligence instead. From this, others will then have a whole new level of respect for us. In essence, this is the state of mind of Buddhas; a state where we see through the nature of things in the human realm, learn to let go and be liberated.

*LETTING GO OF NEGATIVE ENERGY*

It’s a hard truth that this world is filled with suffering. When you are in agony, tell yourself the pain will not last forever, as it diminishes as time passes. Therefore, do not let agony and aggravation anchor themselves in your heart. If you store all of your hatred, jealousy, aggravations, and other negative energies in your heart over an extended period of time, it inflicts suffering upon your mind and soul. It’s similar to computer memory. When the memory is full, it can cause the computer to crash.

*THERE IS “MERIT AND VIRTUE” IF YOU TREAT FRIENDS TO VEGETARIAN MEALS FOR YOUR OWN BIRTHDAY. YOU WILL SOW SEEDS IN THE FIELD OF BLESSINGS*

Caller: How can we celebrate our birthdays as Buddhist practitioners? Before practicing Buddhism, we would feast on an expensive big meal. Now, should we just have a bowl of longevity noodles and recite more Buddhist scriptures?

Master Jun Hong Lu: You can also invite some friends and eat out at a vegetarian restaurant. There is also “merit and virtue” for you when you pay for the meals. Why? If you invite them to have vegetarian meals, and they think “Oh, vegetarian food is also quite delicious”, then you will sow a seed in the field of blessings. Isn’t this a way of introducing Buddhism to them? You spend some money and treat them to vegetarian meals, and you sing “Happy Birthday to You” together, isn’t this even better?

Caller: Yes, this is a wonderful method. Thank you, Master Lu.

Master Jun Hong Lu: You should spend this money since people give you birthday presents or red packets. So you pay them for vegetarian meals in return for the money they have spent on your presents.

*ADOPT THE MIDDLE WAY AND SEE THINGS AS THEY TRULY ARE*

Master Jun Hong Lu: Buddhism is hardly pessimistic. Rather it encourages us to take the Middle Way. To adopt this path means to see things as they truly are, face life truthfully and never to deceive oneself or attempt to evade - this, is the essence of the Middle Way.

Master Jun Hong Lu's Discourse (Question 253)
6 September 2018

*HOW TO ATTAIN A STATE OF ABSOLUTE DISCIPLINE?*

Question: What should we do to achieve a more profound, higher and stricter level of discipline; how can a state of absolute discipline be attained?

Answer: In order to gain wisdom and the power of concentration, one must observe the precepts; and the level of wisdom that one gains is in proportion to their strictness on discipline. Lacking in discipline makes the attainment of wisdom and concentration impossible. On the same note, only through observing the discipline of Bodhisattva can one gain the wisdom of a Bodhisattva. To reiterate, the level of wisdom and concentration one gains is directly proportional to the amount of effort one puts into disciplining oneself. Hence, in the three studies of Buddhism: Precepts, Concentration and Wisdom; all three studies are mutually necessary.

*WHAT DO WE, AS BUDDHIST PRACTITIONERS, NEED?*

If you were an eagle, you could soar in the sky even if there was no one to applaud for you;

If you were grass, you could grow even if there was no one to love you;

If you were a flower in the deep mountains, you could bloom even if there was no one to appreciate you;

If you were a Buddhist practitioner, you could attain Nirvana in this lifetime even if there was no one to encourage you!

*WHERE THERE IS A WILL, THERE IS A WAY. BE MINDFUL AND TAKE CONTROL OF OUR SPEECH, THOUGHTS AND ACTIONS.*

Master Jun Hong Lu: As I have mentioned, where there is a will, there is a way’. This is true regardless of all endeavours. We can accomplish anything that we set our mind to. Conversely, lacking this determination attributes to one’s failure. We should also understand one principle that is, at all times we should guard our speech, thoughts and actions.

*ONE WILL NOT ACHIEVE ANY SPIRITUAL STATUS BY MERELY PERFORMING VIRTUOUS DEEDS WITHOUT ELEVATING ONE’S STATE-OF-MIND*

Caller: Master Lu, you mentioned that a person’s merit is his token for admission to heaven, hence it is very important. In the case where one focuses on cultivating himself spiritually, but he doesn’t go out to help others or perform any virtuous deeds at all, he will end up in the Sound-hearer (Sravakas) or Pratyeka Buddha realm because he has a high state-of-mind but lacks meritorious blessings. Conversely, if a person puts in a lot of effort in helping others, but he does not pay attention to his state-of-mind nor cultivating himself, will he achieve any spiritual status in the end?

Master Jun Hong Lu: If one does not have a high state-of-mind, how can he ascend to heaven? Think about those philanthropists, they will only be an even richer philanthropist in their next life. What's the point? It's meaningless! Many people in the society are doing a lot of good deeds now. They will ascend to heaven for sure, to Realm of Desire or Realm of Forms but they still fail to breakaway from the cycle of rebirths . Their cultivation will come to naught.

Caller: That’s right. They will still descend afterwhich. Another scenario is - if a person puts in a lot of effort in accumulating merits but does not pay attention to cultivating himself spiritually, he may be troubled whenever things turned out to be unpleasant, hence resulting in his merits diminishing.

Master Jun Hong Lu: The diminishment of merits is even worse in this case! A person who does not cultivate himself spiritually hates every single person around him. Seriously, if you do not have a high state-of-mind, you can’t survive a single day in this world as nothing and nobody pleases your eyes! Just like a drunkard looking at the image of himself in the mirror – asking “who are you? I hate your face. Why are you staring at me?”
