*PUT YOURSELF IN OTHERS’ SHOES AND CULTIVATE A SENSE OF EMPATHY*
Master Jun Hong Lu: Buddhism often says that understanding others leads to compassion, human beings are born with innate good nature and karma will take its course. In this human realm, everyone is fighting a battle under various circumstances. When we understand others, we will let things go. In the Dharma it was stated, “if you know your past self, you will definitely forgive who you are now”. Consequently, we have to understand the shifts and charges of human life and that all worldly phenomena are impermanent. The more understanding we are, the more compassion there is within us; the more empathetic we are, the more smooth-sailing our journey will be in this world.

*TRUE CULTIVATION IS TO LIVE A LIFE OF SIMPLICITY*
Master Jun Hong Lu: A happy life is a simple life. We have to learn contentment, tolerance, magnanimity and not to complicate things unnecessarily. When we find ourselves to be spiritually burdened, we tend to impute all faults and blame on others. Therefore, it is essential for us to periodically erase those bad and unpleasant memories that we have been holding on to. Life is short, do not be attached to fame or wealth. Live a life of simplicity - this is true cultivation.

*ALWAYS INSTILL GUAN YIN BODHISATTVA IN OUR MINDS, KEEP GUAN YIN BODHISATTVA ALIVE IN OUR THOUGHTS, AND ALLOW GUAN YIN BODHISATTVA TO RESIDE IN OUR HEARTS*
Caller: Day after day, Guan Yin Bodhisattva is relentlessly helping all predestined sentient beings. Is that right, Master Lu?
Master Jun Hong Lu: That’s true. Therefore, if the thought of Guan Yin Bodhisattva fails to bring a person to tears, it shows that that person is inherently ungrateful. On the other hand, only one who is moved to tears by the mere thought of Bodhisattva is compassionate.
Caller: That’s right.
Master Jun Hong Lu: This is because the compassion of Guan Yin Bodhisattva is unparalleled, be it among heavenly beings or common mortals.
Caller: Yes. The same goes with some people who are moved to tears when they see you, Master Lu.
Master Jun Hong Lu: In comparison, what I have done is insignificant. I have still a lot to learn from Guan Yin Bodhisattva in being more merciful and compassionate. Our tears need not be an external manifestation, more so, it should come from within. Always instill Guan Yin Bodhisattva in our minds; keep Guan Yin Bodhisattva alive in our thoughts and allow Guan Yin Bodhisattva to reside in our hearts.
Caller: I understand. Thank you Master Lu for answering my question.

*WHAT SHOULD WE DO WHEN WE ENCOUNTER A BLOCKADE*
Caller: Master Lu, if we could not resolve an issue or hit a bottleneck which inhibits us from breaking through, despite understanding the principles behind it, how do we overcome it? Master Lu, please enlighten us.
Master Jun Hong Lu: This is due to heavy karmic obstacle. People with heavy karmic obstacle will not be able to comprehend or breakthrough themselves. They should seek Guan Yin Bodhisattva’s help and pray that through recitation of _Heart Sutra_ their problems can be resolved and alleviated.
Caller: Master Lu, you ever advised that we can wish for enlightenment on a particular matter when reciting _Heart Sutra_. Is this to be done as part of our daily homework or recite afresh 108 times _Heart Sutra_ after completion of the homework?
Master Lu: Both are acceptable. When reciting the homework, you can add a statement, “Guan Yin Bodhisattva, please have mercy and enlighten me” you will be enlightened immediately — Bodhisattva will give you an opportunity to understand many things in an instant.
Caller: I understand now. Thank you for answering my question, Master Lu.

*POWER OF ENDURANCE*
The utmost accomplishment in cultivation is one’s ability to endure, as our endurance is our greatest strength. If you wish for serenity and peace at home, you have to endure; if you wish for social safety, you have to learn to endure; if you wish to resolve troubles, you must learn to endure; only then you could survive in this world. Therefore, we have to adopt the wisdom of Buddha to resolve troubles in our daily lives. We ought to learn three methods in life: firstly, learn to admit our mistake; because after you have admitted, the mistake will no longer exist. Secondly, learn to be flexible, patient and accommodating. Thirdly, seek to understand and learn to let go.

(Question 341)

*DO NOT HESITATE TO DISPOSE OF NON-VEGETARIAN FOOD*
Question: During my company outings, non-vegetarian food were provided for lunch. I gave it to my colleagues since I am a vegetarian. Is it proper to do so?
Answer: It is best not to give non-vegetarian food to others. Do not hesitate to throw it away. Otherwise, if one consumes the non-vegetarian food and develops a liking for the taste, he may not practise vegetarianism in the future. This may lead to an increase in his karmic obstacles as well.

On 27 October 2019, Guan Yin Citta (Singapore) held yet another fortnightly English Sharing Session at the practice centre featuring many inspiring and enriching items on the lineup.
The first segment, was a continuation of the previous session’s topic on the “Ten things that Buddhist practitioners should not wish for”. It reminded the audience members about *the importance of taking the lead to contribute instead of harbouring thoughts to leverage in any relationship;* and that *the compulsion to having one’s way is a surefire relationship killer*.
Next, listeners had an illuminating discovery from the topic *“To pause is to advance”*. They learnt that *prayers could be answered in many ways and sometimes the answers could be ‘Wait’.* It is important for one to understand the value in waiting and one should press on in their spiritual cultivation during this time.
Another interesting topic was on the crucial reasons *how gratitude can change one’s life.* Listeners were thus inspired to have gratitude for the small and simple things in life when they learnt that the more one express gratitude for what they have, the more likely they will have even more to express gratitude for.
Finally, a Buddhist friend inspired the audience members with her life testimony on how even *for someone who had always been grieving, with tumultuous upbringing and living in abusive home could turn her life around for the better through embracing the Three Golden Buddhist Practices of Guan Yin Citta.*
If you wish to understand more about Master Lu’s latest discourses, learn to apply Buddhist teachings into our everyday lives, imbibe yourself with more positive energy and blessings from Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, we welcome you! Join us in the next English Sharing Session to embark on a wondrous expedition of wisdom and positivity!

*SEVEN REASONS WHY WE SHOULD NOT GET ANGRY*
1. We should never get angry as our anger will only exterminate the very last trace of rationality in us.
2. We should never get angry as our anger will ignite the excruciating sense of grievance deep inside us.
3. We should never get angry as our anger will destroy our normal course of life.
4. We should never get angry as our anger will engulf our last courage to forgive others in the end.
5. We should never get angry as our anger will only make matters worse.
6. We should never get angry as our anger will not hurt anyone else but ourselves, aggravating our pain and worsening our emotional distress.
7. We should never get angry as our anger will not make anyone see the truth; it only steers us back to the wrong behaviour which leads us to make the same mistake time and again.

*WHEN WE LOSE COUNT ON THE NUMBER OF PROSTRATIONS DONE, DO MORE, NOT LESS*
Caller: When offering incense and paying respects to Bodhisattvas, we will usually perform seven prostrations at the beginning and at the end of the process. However, at times, we may be too engrossed that we lose count on the number of prostrations done. In that case, is it alright if we perform more or less?
Master Jun Hong Lu: You would rather perform more than lesser prostrations.
Caller: That means it is fine to perform more prostrations because that is what I do when I am worried that I have miscounted.
Master Jun Hong Lu: That should be the way, you may perform more prostrations. Nobody is offended by excessive politeness.

(Question 162)
May 21, 2017
*RELATIONSHIP OF MERITS AND HINDRANCES*
Q: Is it true that hindrances will increase in tandem with more merits accrued by a person?
A: The greater the desire to attain enlightenment, the greater the demonic hindrances will be. The more a person is being respected, the more jealousy will be invited. If you are to become a model employee, others will be jealous of your status. The taller a tree, the stronger the wind and rain it will have to withstand. No one will pay attention to a sapling.
