*MAINTAIN OUR HUMILITY AND REMEMBER TO KEEP OUR HEAD DOWN*

Master Jun Hong Lu: Many of us may be outstanding in our own unique ways; though so, we should not forget that no matter how good we think we are, there is always someone out there who is better. Hence, always remind ourselves to keep our head down and be humble; let us be steadfast in our endeavours and we will realize there are so many more people who will hold us in high regard. A genuinely successful person, will still shine when he keeps his head down and he will be respected and held in esteem by others.

On 14 July 2019, Guan Yin Citta (Singapore) held yet another fortnightly English Sharing Session at the practice centre featuring many inspiring and enriching items on the lineup.

The theme of the sharing session was about the five elements -- earth, fire, water, metal and air.

A segment of the sharing touched on *the lessons that we can learn from water* through a meaningful story about the *Seven states of mind of successful people among which - be stoic amidst a hundred adversities, tolerance and acceptance, using softness to conquer strength, flexibility in one’s rise and fall, altruistic giving to all and
retire after having made one’s mark.

The keynote sharing focused on *the balance of Yin Yang in relation to the five elements*, as well as *the metaphysics of the five elements and our body*. The audience gleaned greater insights about the opposing, interdependent, and transformative nature of all things in the cosmos in relation to our vital organs.

Also, Buddhist friend, Sim shared his inspiring story on how he kicked his decade long addiction to smoking and alcohol, something he never imagined he could do if not with the blessing from Bodhisattva.

If you wish to understand more about *Master Lu’s latest discourses, learn to apply Buddhist teachings into our everyday lives, imbibe yourself with more positive energy and blessings from Buddhas and Bodhisattvas*, we welcome you! Join us in the next *English Sharing Session* to embark on a wondrous expedition of wisdom and positivity!

*STEADFAST MINDFULNESS*

A little monk asked an old monk, “Master, what have you been doing before you attained realization?”

The old monk said, “Before I attain realization, I have been chopping woods, fetching water and cooking.”

Little monk continued to ask, “How about after you attained realization?”

Old monk replied, “Chop woods, fetch water and cook.”

Little monk asked, “How do you explain realization then?”

Old monk replied, “Before I attain realization, I would worry about fetching water while chopping wood, and worry about cooking while fetching water. After I attained realization, my attention is undiverted and stayed focus on completion of each task before moving on. This is called steadfast mindfulness!”

*HOW DO WE REMAIN OPTIMISTIC IN THE FACE OF ADVERSITIES?*

Master Jun Hong Lu: The importance of tolerance should be realised by every individual. When we do not mind being short-changed, we will be able to remain optimistic in the face of adversities. This is because we are looking at life issues with the right understanding and we are willing to forgive. With this attitude, we will come to realise that things are not as bad as it seems and that we can always find a silver lining. Conversely, one will find the world to be murky when they see it through the lens of pessimism, narrow-mindedness and selfishness.

*DO NOT INSTINCTIVELY DEFINE THE MORAL CONDUCT OF OTHERS*

Master Jun Hong Lu: Always remember the good and not the bad of others. Do not instinctively define other’s moral conduct based on some insignificant incidences. We should know that everyone has their own sets of flaws and it is natural for one to be selfish and stray from a marked path at times.

*KSITIGARBHA BODHISATTVA'S (DI ZHANG WANG PU SA) DISCOURSE IN A DREAM:*
*DAILY CULTIVATION AND RECITATIONS ARE VERY IMPORTANT; LAGGING BEHIND IN DAILY HOMEWORK WILL NOT PRODUCE RESULTS IN THE FUTURE*

Caller: Two days ago, a Buddhist practitioner dreamt of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva giving her guidance: Daily cultivation and recitations are very important and the accumulated energies are very large. If we are not diligent, a day’s shortfall in our homework will not produce any result for catching up that day’s work in the future. After that, Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva gave her an idea about the law of conservation of energy, because the Buddhist practitioner had indeed procrastinated and accumulated her daily homework when she was tired and doing all the accumulated recitations incessantly in a day. Sometimes, her thoughts wandered and she felt very irritable. This time, she could feel Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva telling her that those improper thoughts were actually her previous life’s karma. Master Lu, please enlighten us.

Master Jun Hong Lu: Firstly, this Buddhist practitioner has a very deep affinity with Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva. Secondly, I can vouch for the fact that Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva had indeed said all those words, because while you were delivering your speech just now, I saw Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva. And thirdly, let me tell you, Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva has a very loving kindness towards mankind and he felt sad that sentient human beings are heading towards the realm of hell in their lifetimes. This is due to the ignorance of the daily lifestyle to which each phase must pay attention.

Caller: Master Lu, is this to say that we must not lag behind in our daily homework?

Master Jun Hong Lu: It is not good to lag behind in homework. Shortfalls for one or two days are alright, but over prolonged periods they will become a retraction. Let me ask you, if you are absent from school for one or two days, you can apply medical leaves because of a health issue. However, if you did not attend school for a whole month, would you not retreat from schooling?

Caller: Yes, indeed. Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva has been concerned all along with the Buddhist practitioner’s cultivation in Guan Yin Citta Dharma Door. There was a time where she procrastinated reciting the daily _Eighty-Eight Buddhas Great Repentance_ for a week and then did all the recitations incessantly over the weekend.

*THE STRONGER THE RESOLUTION THE GREATER THE POSITIVE RETURNS WILL BE.*
*CULTIVATION IS FROM OUR HEART AND NOT A MATTER OF MOTION*

Caller: Master, each time when we offer large incense, how much help would it be in eliminating our karmic obstacles or transforming our destiny?

Master Jun Hong Lu: The question that you just asked is related to math, whereas my teachings are about Buddhist studies. They are entirely different. If one has a strong resolution, the outcome from Buddhism cultivation will be enormous and cannot be measured against the number of incense offered. A novice monk when performing recitation; will not make it without an intent. Cultivation evolves from our innate heart. Bodhisattva is not attached to the worldly materials and the wellbeing is not measured against how many incense one offers. By doing so, aren’t you treating Bodhisattva as a human?
