Master Jun Hong Lu’s Discourse (Question 256)
17 September 2018

*MAY THERE BE MORE PREDESTINED SENTIENT BEINGS WHO ARE ABLE TO HEAR THE BUDDHA'S TEACHINGS*

Question: When we pay respect to Bodhisattva, can we make the following prayer: “I wish that there will be more predestined sentient beings who are able to hear the Buddha’s Teachings, abandon sufferings and obtain happiness”. Is it proper to make wishes of this nature or are they considered too great?

Answer: This is an extremely commendable wish that everyone can make.

*WHERE THERE IS A WILL, THERE IS A WAY. BE MINDFUL AND TAKE CONTROL OF OUR SPEECH, THOUGHTS AND ACTIONS.*

Master Jun Hong Lu: As I have mentioned, where there is a will, there is a way’. This is true regardless of all endeavours. We can accomplish anything that we set our mind to. Conversely, lacking this determination attributes to one’s failure. We should also understand one principle that is, at all times we should guard our speech, thoughts and actions.

*WHAT KIND OF ACTS ARE CONSIDERED AS FEARLESSNESS DANA (ABHAYA DANA)?*

Caller: Master Lu, there are different types of Dana, namely Wealth Dana (Amisa Dāna), Dharma Dāna and Fearlessness Dana (Abhaya Dāna). Most of our Buddhist friends are only familiar with Dharma Dāna and Wealth Dana; what kind of acts and tricks are considered as Fearlessness Dana?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Don’t you know about Fearlessness Dana? Go to the Buddhist Practice Centre and help to shift the wooden stools or mop the floor, drive others around, help in transporting books, move things, etc., all are considered as Fearlessness Dana. Also, help others in moving fish, perform heavy duties, as long as it is meant for helping sentient beings and it is virtuous deeds. Did you see how many people were arranging chairs in the Guan Yin Hall during the Dharma convention period? All these acts are considered as Fearlessness Dana.

*DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF THE LITTLE THINGS THAT WE DO*

Master Jun Hong Lu: As the saying goes, ‘great undertakings have small beginnings, and difficult tasks are tackled from where it is easy’. After all, even a large tree has the origins of a small sapling; a high platform is constructed piece by piece; and walking a thousand miles would not be possible without that first step forward.

Indeed, all who have accomplished great undertakings did so bit by bit. Hence, do not refuse to do something because you perceive it to be insignificant as the accumulation of these acts can give rise to something important.

In any domain, as long as you persist in putting ten thousand hours of deliberate practice, you could become an expert regardless of the field. Likewise for Buddhism studies, it is our daily recitation and spiritual cultivation that forms the foundation of Buddhahood.

*THE MORE MAGNANIMOUS YOU ARE, THE MORE BLESSINGS YOU HAVE*

Caller: Master Lu, please give me a few words of advice.

Master Jun Hong Lu: Be diligent in your cultivation. Despite your young age, you should not be constrained in your thought or have a narrow mind. In other words, be magnanimous, as the more magnanimous you are, the more blessings you will receive.

Caller: Okay.

Master Jun Hong Lu: One who is able to accept rebuke or criticism is a well-mannered person. Conversely, one who fails to do so will amount to nothing. Do you understand?

Caller: Yes. I am useless, I will work harder to mend my ways.

Master Jun Hong Lu: Okay.

*ONE SHOULD NOT PERFORM GOOD DEEDS WITH THE INTENT TO COVER UP HIS OWN WRONGDOINGS*

Caller: A Buddhist practitioner is in debt. In the event that he has money to perform life liberation, but is not repaying his debt, is the virtuous achievement gained through performing life liberation considered perfect?

Master Jun Hong Lu: He should repay a portion of his outstanding debt while setting aside some for life liberation. One should not perform good deeds with the intent to cover up his wrongdoings. The reasoning behind such an act is improper.

*PRECEPTS TO BE ADHERED TO BY LAY PRACTITIONERS*

Caller: Master Jun Hong Lu, when we, as lay practitioners, make a vow to have the Bodhisattva and Dharma Protectors watch over us, what are the precepts that we should adhere to? Do we really have to adhere to the precepts like monks and nuns? As a lay practitioners of Guan Yin Citta Dharma Door, what are the precepts that we should observe?

Master Jun Hong Lu: It’s simple. Basically a lay practitioner is required to “Do no evil and practise only the good”.

Caller: Are there any particular areas that we should pay special attention to?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Firstly, avoid sexual misconduct, abstain from stealing, abstain from lying and killing as well as taking intoxicants. These are the basic Five Precepts that you should at least adhere to. It also includes abstaining from lying, as doing so will cause harm to oneself. Lying is the prelude to misconduct. More often than not, a person who lies is more likely to be involved in a misconduct. Abstain from stealing, as a lay practitioner, will you commit acts of stealing both at home and in public places? Abstain from killing and sexual misconduct. One should also refrain from false speech. Both men and women must refrain from taking liquor because one can lose his senses when the mind is intoxicated.
Look at the famous Tang dynasty poet Li Bai, who had been drinking all his life. Despite being such an exceptionally great poet, his later years were in misery. You can see for yourself, his life came to an unfortunate end due to his addiction to alcohol.

Guan Yin Citta & Master Lu
On 5 May 2019, Guan Yin Citta (Singapore) held yet another fortnightly English Sharing Session at the practice centre featuring many enriching items.

The theme of this sharing was about the *upcoming Dharma Convention on 11 May 2019 and why you should not miss it*.

Through this session, the audience gained a *deeper understanding of Dharma Dana and Wealth Dana*. A member of the audience happily concurred, saying that " I'll definitely apply what I've learnt about giving generously!"

The sharing also touched on how attending Dharma Conventions and encouraging others to do the same will allow us to cultivate spiritually, accrue meritorious blessings and eliminate karmic debts.

Another highlight of the session enlightened the audience about the *right attitude that volunteers and participants should adopt during Dharma Conventions*.

Upon interview, volunteers in the audience said that their biggest takeaway from the session was about the *importance of having a pure mind and being free from distracting thoughts while reciting and performing their duties wholeheartedly*. Hence, this illustrates how the sharing value-adds to the experience of attendees and volunteers during the Dharma Convention.

Join us in the next *English Sharing Session* to embark on a wondrous expedition of wisdom and positivity!

Date and time:
Sunday 26 May 2019
2:00 - 3:30 pm

*THE GREATEST PAIN IN LIFE IS TO WAIT TO REAP WHAT ONE SOWS; ONE WILL NOT SUFFER IF HE DOESN'T SOW THE SEEDS OF CAUSE*

Master Jun Hong Lu: The greatest pain in life is to wait for the effect of your causal actions to come to fruition. Thus, you will not be suffering if you do not sow the seeds of cause. You will not have to endure the torment of waiting for the judge’s decision if you do not get involved in a lawsuit. But that’s the way people are. Can you not perform any causal action? Why must you do so?
