*CONSEQUENCES OF SPEAKING AT WILL*

Caller: At times, people tend to be careless in their conversation. For example, some may say things jokingly like “I will work like a horse in my next life to repay someone’s kindness”. If they say such things, will it really lead to the repercussion of being reincarnated in the Animal realm as a result of karma?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Yes. If the vow was made officially with Bodhisattvas around, there will definitely be karmic consequences. If it was unofficial, then it will be fine. It should not be an issue if such vow was made before you start practising Buddhism. This is because a non-practitioner does not possess any ‘energy’, thus, words spoken will have no impact. Let me give you an example, conceptually, do you think there is a difference between vows made by Master and vows made by you?

Caller: No doubt it will definitely be different.

Master Jun Hong Lu: Exactly, it’s that simple.

*A KIND PERSON INTEGRATES THE SPIRIT OF WATER INTO THEIR HEARTS*

Master Jun Hong Lu: A kind person is one whose heart is as calm as water. They keep a low-profile and their mind is unflustered. Paradoxically, it is our non-contending nature that helps us live by our life principles as it is the assertive ones who will lose their grip on them.

We must learn to be at peace with ourselves regardless of whether we are facing favourable or unfavourable people and situations. Be kind like the water in our dealings with others and allow compassion to be manifested. Please remember, compassion renders us the biggest strength as it empowers us with a mind that is pure and clean. As Buddhists, we should walk the talk; be tolerant and go with the flow as after all, all rivers run into the sea. As the saying goes, the highest form of good is that of water as it strives solely to benefit all beings.

*HAPPINESS IS CONTENTMENT*

Master Jun Hong Lu: Doing good and accumulating merits establishes a foundation for a better tomorrow; sowing the seeds of kindness to reap positive fruits ensures that we have reserves for all of eternity. For happiness to always be by our side, we must learn to be contented with what we have in life. Indeed, to be happy is to be content, and contentment is a source of strength. Today, we are able to enjoy the company of our family, receive the care and concern from our Buddhist friends, be blessed with good health and encounter Buddhism; these are truly the greatest sources of happiness in this world.

*THE DEFINITION OF TOLERANCE FOR WORDS, PEOPLE AND MATTERS*

Caller: Master has mentioned before that, there are three aspects of tolerance, namely the tolerance for words, people and matters. Would you please elaborate further, Master Lu?

Master Jun Hong Lu: ‘Tolerance for appearance’ is to be tolerant of others regardless of their physical appearance. Similarly, when it comes to ‘tolerance for words’, we should be forgiving no matter what others may have said. As for ‘tolerance for people’, be forbearing with others despite their speech and action. And when you have ‘tolerance for matters’, it means you have the tolerance for all the good and bad in others as you are someone who allows nature to take its course. With that, a forbearing person is a person with tolerance, which is the trait that leads to diligence in one's spiritual cultivation.

Caller: I understand now.

*IN THE CASE WHERE KARMIC OBSTACLES HAVE ERUPTED, CAN WE UTILISE OUR VIRTUES TO ELIMINATE THEM?*

Caller: Master Lu, when we dreamed of having karmic obstacles, and on top of that we felt that the karmic obstacles have indeed erupted in real life, if we are unable to make it in time to recite Little Houses, can we use our virtues to eliminate the karmic obstacles?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Yes, you may do so.

Caller: What about if the person’s virtues are insufficient?

Master Jun Hong Lu: In such cases, elimination will not be possible, that goes without saying. It’s the same logic as having not enough money to purchase something. You may ask me next, what about some others who, though they do not have enough money, are still able to make a purchase? It’s because he took “an overdraft”, they used their credit card. Under these circumstances, making vows to Bodhisattva is like owning a credit card. They vow, “Bodhisattva, I will definitely do ……when I recover from this illness. As long as I have one breath left, I will use it to introduce Dharma to others”. With this, they gained the trust of Bodhisattva and are granted a credit card to spend in advance. Here comes the point: if, after this ordeal, they manage to recover from this illness but do not make any repayment, their house will be taken away and sold off eventually.

*DO NOT BE DEPRESSED BY LIFE’S TROUBLES*

Master Jun Hong Lu: Oftentimes we feel that the sun had refused to shine when we are faced with the little setbacks and worries in our life - “…why is life so unfair?”, “…what are all these hassles about?” In fact, there is no end to our worries, hence we might as well learn to endure them. When our hands are covering both our eyes, we will not be able to see the sun, the blue sky, the white clouds and the beautiful sunset in our life. Therefore, we should not allow ourselves to be intertwined or get depressed over life’s little troubles and sufferings. Sadly, many people choose to end their life or fail to see through its reality under such circumstances, not realising that it is only because they are blinded by the huge pair of hands that cover their eyes.

*HOW TO CULTIVATE MAGNANIMITY*

Caller: Master Lu, how do we cultivate magnanimity of minds? I understand that by fostering greater sympathy and compassion, we can cultivate magnanimity. Are there other ways to achieve this?

Master Jun Hong Lu: To cultivate magnanimity, one should learn to endure humiliation, and gain great control of his emotions. These are all very important.

*THOSE WITH HEALTH ISSUES MAY PRAY TO NANJING BODHISATTVA AND RECITE 108 TIMES OF THE _MANTRA TO UNTIE KARMIC KNOTS_ DAILY*

Caller: Master Lu, it is said that those with health issues can kneel in front of Nanjing Bodhisattva and recite 108 times of the _Mantra To Untie Karmic Knots_ daily. Is this applicable for a case by case basis or a general basis?

Master Jun Hong Lu: On a general basis.

Caller: How should we state our prayers?

Master Jun Hong Lu: You may state the following, "May Guan Yin Bodhisattva protect and bless me with good health". It is the same offering if we are to seek general or targeted blessings.

Caller: Under what circumstances do we seek blessings from Nanjing Bodhisattva?

Master Jun Hong Lu: You may pray to Nanjing Bodhisattva if you suffer from skin or bone conditions.

Caller: Additionally, a Buddhist friend interacts with many Christian or western customers due to his work. Should he pray to Nanjing Bodhisattva in his mind beforehand to regulate the energy fields?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Yes, he should. Nanjing Bodhisattva is able to help to stem all illnesses with a touch of his hand.

Caller: I understand now.
