Master Jun Hong Lu's Discourse (Question 212)
6 March 2018
*USE DRY CLOTH TO CLEAN STATUE OF BODHISATTVA*
Question: Can we use wet tissue to clean statue or portrait of Bodhisattva?
Answer: If the statue is made of ceramic, you may use wet tissue. However, the fact that some of the wet tissues contain alcohol, it may result in the peeling of the statue or portrait of Bodhisattva. Thus, dry cloth is still the best option.

*OUR MIND IS AN IMPORTANT MACHINE, UNMOVING SUCHNESS IS THE KEY*
Master Jun Hong Lu: Our mind is the most important machine, if it stops functioning or malfunction, we will encounter problems with our brain, limbs, as well as soul. Due to the close relation between mind and body, many people who are psychologically ill are likely to suffer physiologically, and vice versa. On that premise, what could possibly be the source of problem? The answer is very simple: it is our troubled mind. The jealousy, hatred and greed that harbour in our mind will bring about demonic obstacles in us, and cause us to get caught up in a predicament which we are unable to break free. As such, the first lesson for any Buddhist cultivator is to master unmoving suchness.

*“BODHISATTVAS FEAR CAUSES, SENTIENT BEINGS FEAR EFFECTS”*
In cultivation, we should focus our efforts on the “cause” rather than to pray for the impending “effect”: “Bodhisattvas fear causes, sentient beings fear effects”.
Bodhisattvas would have contemplated on the effects of the deeds prior to committing it, whereas sentient beings carelessly commit causal actions without properly realising its retribution. When the effects occur later, they will suffer and start to pray for Bodhisattva’s blessing. That being said, we should focus our efforts on the "causes" rather than fervently praying for favorable "effects" to come about.

*MASTER JUN HONG LU’S DISCOURSE ON BUDDHIST PRACTICE AND SPIRITUAL CULTIVATION*
Caller: Master Lu, I am very touched by one of your teachings. Let me read it out for all. “In every age, there will be a large number of Bodhisattvas who have attained enlightenment. They attained enlightenment because they are quietly cultivating their mind, introducing Buddhism to other people and helping all sentient beings when other people are indulged in worldly enjoyments. When others have not been able to fathom the true essence of this world, they have already realised the true essence of life. Therefore, when others start seeking the true essence of life after experiencing pains, they would have become Bodhisattvas.”
Master Jun Hong Lu: Let’s take Lu Xun (鲁迅, China’s greatest modern writer for most of the 20th century) as an example. When asked what made him a great writer, he replied: “I spent all my time at work while others used theirs for drinking coffee.” It’s as simple as that. When others are indulged in the pleasures of life, we are diligently practising Buddhism and performing recitation; it will then be our turn to enjoy when others are suffering. That’s the logic behind it.
Caller: I understand now, thank you Master Lu.

*A BODHI MIND SPROUTS FORTH LOTUSES WITH EVERY STEP*
Caller: Master Lu, could you explain the phrase, “When the mind is congruent with Bodhi, every step forward will sprout lotuses”.
Master Jun Hong Lu: “When the mind is congruent with Bodhi”, the mind must correspondingly be filled with compassion, and embodied wisdom, diligence and courage just like Bodhisattva; whereby “every step forward will sprout lotuses” is an analogy to describe every step taken is on the path of lotus, the path of Bodhisattva.

*A WISE PERSON IS ONE WHO KNOWS HOW TO LET GO*
Master Jun Hong Lu:
We should be feeling happy while going through the path of Buddhism. If a person gossip frequently, he would have already entwined within. Why do I keep reiterating the importance of being magnanimous, not allowing ourselves to be entwined in the right and wrong of this human realm and learn to let nature takes its course to the Buddhist monks and my disciples?
To break away from affliction is to stop dwelling on matters that we should not be thinking, not doing things that we aren’t supposed to do, and not saying things that we shouldn’t be saying. Affliction is a by-product of our speech, action and thoughts.
Therefore a truly wise person is characterized by his magnanimity and righteousness. He knows that one’s true nature can only be revealed with a pure heart and only a wise person could attain enlightenment.
Let me tell you, everything happens for a reason. Be it love or hatred, it has something to do with your previous life. Therefore a truly wise person is one who can look beyond and let go!

*REASON FOR HAVING TOO MUCH DISTRACTING THOUGHTS DURING RECITATION*
Caller: When carrying out certain tasks, why we often feel particularly anxious, as though we wish to accomplish several tasks at once? When we perform scripture recitations hastily, our minds are perpetually thinking of other things. Master Lu, is this due to the greed in us?
Master Jun Hong Lu: Those who have too many distracting thoughts and who take the world of human too seriously, will tend to fail in performing good recitations. On the contrary, those who are truly able to transcend worldliness, are able to let go of everything in this world as they are indifferent to it all. These are the people who could cultivate well.
Caller: I see. Thank you Master Lu for answering my question.
