*HOW DO WE ACCOMPLISH UNITY OF KNOWLEDGE AND ACTION*

Caller:  Some people are very articulate in preaching the principles of Buddhist teachings.  However, their behavior does not concur with what they preached.  There are others who may not be very expressive but they are well-behaved.  Master Lu, with these two scenarios, how do we accomplish unity of knowledge and action?

Master Jun Hong Lu:  In the latter category, those people will have to improve their knowledge and learn to speak more often.  As for the earlier category, they will have to ensure that their knowledge and action goes hànd in hand. What is the use of having the ability to convince people with your knowledge when it does not concur with your actions?  Your knowledge and ability to converse well only make you a Buddhist scholar.  You are not able to save sentient beings like Bodhisattva nor can you manifest the qualities of Bodhisattva to make others feel that you.... "a fine example has boundless power ".

Many people said that they adored ‘Lei Feng’ from a young age.  Why would they emulate him if they did not revere him?  If I do not revere Bodhisattva, how do I emulate Bodhisattva?  Likewise, if I do not revere Sakyamuni Buddha and Guan Yin Bodhisattva, how do I learn from them and study Dharma?  Being eloquent is pointless as it will merely make you someone who has learned Dharma once.   Only when our innermost beings correspond to Bodhisattva that we can be a true Bodhisattva.  This is when others can see it clearly from your behavior.

*COUNTER PETTINESS BY HAVING MORE COMPASSION AND FIND JOY IN GIVING*

Caller: If a person is petty, how do we counter the fundamental of this temperament? In the recent Public Talk on Buddhism, Master Lu said that I’m very petty. You also mentioned that a person with small eyes, generally has a petty disposition.

Master Jun Hong Lu: While you perform recitation of the Heart Sutra, you must also understand the importance of compassion and the joy in giving. Once you have gained more compassion, you will be more generous. Those who are generous are those who are magnanimous. Your finding of joy in giving relies on the compassion you have. Being able to find joy in giving is a matter of state of mind. On the contrary, if you are asked to give but you do not find any joy in doing so, there is nothing I can do to help. Do you understand?

Caller: Yes.

*THE SEQUENCE OF PERFORMING DAILY RECITATION*

Caller: Master Lu, with regards to the set of scriptures in our daily recitations, is there any sequence in recitation that we should observe? For example, after _*Great Compassion Mantra*_, shall we continue to recite _*Heart Sutra*_ or _*Cundi Dharani*_ etc.? Is there a sequence to observe or a method of pairing these scriptures that makes it more effective?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Certainly! You will have to start with _*Great Compassion Mantra*_, followed by _*Heart Sutra*_, then the ten short mantras. As for the recitation of _*Eighty-Eight Buddhas Great Repentance*_, you may do it either at the end or at the very beginning. Generally, our recitation should start with _*Great Compassion Mantra*_ and _*Heart Sutra*_.

Caller: I understand now.

Question 32
*IT IS BEST TO PERFORM DAILY RECITATION FIRST BEFORE BURNING LITTLE HOUSE*

Q: If we would like to burn the _Application for Name Change_ (Gai Ming Shen Wen) and _Little House_ at 8am, which one should we do first?

A: You may burn _Little House_ and perform Daily Recitation in the morning. However, performing Daily Recitation prior to burning _Little House_ is more proper. The fact that you have invited Bodhisattva and performed your recitation of scriptures enhance your spiritual energy. Hence, burning _Little House_ at this point is better. If you burn _Little House_ early in the morning without performing your Daily Recitation, should foreign spirits approach and take the _Little House_, you will be prone to getting sick as your spiritual energy level is low. Therefore, offering _Little House_ upon the completion of your Daily Recitation makes it more complete.

*_GREAT COMPASSION MANTRA_ POSSESSES THE EFFECT OF _EIGHTY-EIGHT BUDDHAS GREAT REPENTANCE (LIFO)_*

Question:  There is an elderly lady in Guan Yin Hall who is illiterate.  She doesn’t speak Mandarin and neither is she able to articulate in Chinese dialects.  She is very committed to learning the practices of Guan Yin Citta Dharma Door, and had made a vow to practise vegetarianism her whole life.  She gets up at 5 every morning to recite the Buddhist scriptures along with a mantra recorder.  She has managed to master the recitation of *_Great Compassion Mantra, Heart Sutra_* and *_Sapta Atitabuddha Karasaniya Dharani (Qi Fo Mie Zui Zhen Yan)_*. However, the recitation of *_LIFO_* still poses as a challenge to her.
Master, may I know for elderlies like her, can they perform a fixed amount of *_Qi Fo Mie Zui Zhen Yan_* as a tentative substitute for *_LIFO_* in their daily recitation?

Answer:  Good question!  As elderly like her is not able to recite *_LIFO_*, they may recite more of *_Qi Fo Mie Zui Zhen Yan_* and also *_Great Compassion Mantra_*.  After they recite *_Great Compassion Mantra_*, they may say a similar prayer like performing _*LIFO*_, “May Bodhisattva protect and bless me.  If I have committed any misdeeds, may I be forgiven..etc”.  You may not be aware that in fact, *_Great Compassion Mantra_* does possess the effect of *_LIFO_*.

*WHAT TO DO WITH RAMPANT DISTRACTING THOUGHTS*

Caller: Master Lu, lately, I have rampant distracting thoughts which I could not control them. What should I do?

Master Jun Hong Lu: It goes to show that you are not cultivating well if you cannot control your rampant thoughts. This requires daily practice so that you could manage your wandering thoughts and put them under control.

Caller: I kept trying but I could not restrain the sudden invasion of the thoughts.

Master Jun Hong Lu: That is because you have not been curbing your thoughts well.

Caller: I understand, Master Lu. I will learn to control my distracting thoughts from today onwards. Thank you for answering my question, Master Lu.

*THREE WAYS TO INTRODUCE BUDDHISM TO THE OTHERS*

Caller: There is an elderly lady who is now very diligent in practicing Guan Yin Citta Dharma Door. Every day, besides performing scripture recitations, she listens to Master’s radio programs and she has adopted a full vegetarian diet too. However, she is unsure how she should help more people by introducing Buddhism to them. I would like to seek Master Lu’s advice.

Master Jun Hong Lu: Please convey this message to her. There are three ways of doing so.

Number 1: When you distribute some Buddhist materials for others to read, it is considered as introducing Buddhism to the others

Number 2: When you share with others through conversations, it is considered as introducing Buddhism to the others

Number 3: When you demonstrate good behaviour, it is also considered as introducing Buddhism to the others.

For example, you have family members who do not believe in Buddhism. If you, on the other hand, are serious in your cultivation and you treat them with the utmost respect, you act totally differently to what they expect. Once they witness the changes in you, they will go “Wow! Learning Buddhism seems to have a very good effect on you!”. You can respond to them: “Yes, that’s right. I am learning Buddhism. You should, too!”. Don’t you consider this as introducing Buddhism to your family? Demonstrate more to others about what Buddhism entails through your behaviour and your words. In addition, offer them books to read or let them listen more, these are all possible ways of propagating Buddhism.

*“IMPURE “ KINDNESS WILL CAUSE OUR BLESSINGS TO DISSIPATE GREATLY*

As long as our kindness is "impure", our blessings will dissipate greatly.  For example, when you are jealous of others and you feel uneasy when you see others leading a good life, all these sentiments will deplete your blessings.  Let’s quote another example, when you see others waste their food, or behave improperly etc… and thereafter this person was strickened by serious illness. If you start to think: “See! The forces of retribution are always listening!  People like him would suffer the consequences of his own bad deeds!”  That’s it!  As there is no empathy or compassion in you; instead you take pleasure in other’s misfortune, your blessings will once again dissipate.

*3 WAYS TO CLEANSE OURSELVES*

I would like to teach you something today.

When our external body is soiled, what do we do?
We take a bath.

Then what if our internal organs are overloaded with waste products?
Drink lots of water to detox!  Water is the best medicine, hence drinking lots of water, to flush out impurities inside the colons and livers, is a form of taking an “internal bath”.

And how do we go about giving ourselves a bath “spiritually”?
It is through making great vows, performing recitations and life liberations!
