SEEING MANY SPIRITS INSIDE THE SUBWAY, AND NEEDING TO BE CONSTANTLY MINDFUL OF SENTIENT BEINGS’ SUFFERINGS TO ENABLE ONESELF TO BE PERPETUALLY ADVANCING
2017-01-01

Caller: A Buddhist practitioner is vaguely aware that he has a mission in this life. There was a time when he slackened a little and developed cramps as he recited the Eighty-Eight Buddhas Great Repentance. Then, the spirit planted a thought in him: “Do you know that it is very difficult for us spirits to do cultivation in the spiritual world? Sentient beings have such a great condition and environment and yet they do not take advantage of this situation to cultivate properly!” There was another time when a Buddhist practitioner was travelling on the subway, he actually saw that many spiritual beings were waiting for him to save them and he started to shed tears. He had previously asked Bodhisattva how to maintain diligence in the practice of Dharma. Bodhisattva replied to him: “You must always think of the sufferings of sentient beings.” He finally realised the Bodhisattva’s words when he saw so many spiritual beings on the subway. Master, please advise him on how to continue cultivating correctly.
Master Jun Hong Lu: He needs to put in more effort and be even more diligent in helping other people. It is not a joke that they let him see what others cannot see. This is to let him know that sentient beings are suffering and can become ghosts in the spirit world in an unwary moment. Spirits in the underworld are not able to do cultivation, unlike sentient beings who can cultivate best on earth. Do you understand? (I understand now, Master. So he should use his energies to help sentient beings, right?) Yes, indeed.

*MASTER LU’S DISCOURSE: THREE CONDITIONS TO FULFIL IN ORDER TO ASCEND TO BODHISATTVA REALM*

Master Jun Hong Lu: Please remember, there are three conditions to fulfil in order to ascend to Bodhisattva Realm:
1) Foundation;
2) Dharma Cultivation;
3) Great Vows.

In fact, this information is considered a mystery of heaven and I have just revealed it today. All the conditions listed are indispensable. Firstly, great vows. Many Buddhist cultivators lack motivation and hardly progress after practising for some time. Such cultivators will not be able to ascend to higher realm.

Secondly, your current state of cultivation. One must cultivate in a lawful manner without slackening or retrograding in their cultivation, and not turning a blind eye to people who are in mortal danger. There was a saying in the past, “I just have to discipline myself well…”, does this mean cultivate earnestly? Let me tell you, refusal to lift your fingers to save someone in mortal danger is a sin. Ignoring the sufferings of people before your eyes and not offering a helping hand is inhumane; and because you do not have a compassionate heart, thus, you will not be able to attain the state of Bodhisattva.

Lastly, foundation. If you do not have a sound foundation, you will never be able to ascend to the upper realms.

*THIS WORLD IS AN ILLUSION*

A sage is a person with wisdom, he understands that this world is an illusion and that he should leave it behind without further ado. An ignorant person, on the other hand, is one who takes this illusory world as real. To a person who fails to understand the truth of life, the world is a punishment to him and he lives in agony everyday.

*DISCOURSE BY GUAN DI BODHISATTVA : NO ONE SHOULD PLEA FOR LENIENCY FOR ANYONE WHO MAKE ILL-GOTTEN GAINS IN THE NAME OF BUDDHA AND BODHISATTVA, DAMAGES OR SLANDERS BUDDHISM;*
*TRANGRESSOR SHALL FALL INTO THE RELENTLESS HELL WITH NO CHANCE OF REINCARNATION*

Guan Di Bodhisattva’s discourse: “To make ill-gotten gains in the name of Buddha and Bodhisattvas, to damage Buddha’s doctrine and regulations and slanderers shall be severely punished - no one is to plead for leniency for the transgressors”.

Those who make ill-gotten gains in the name of Buddha, destroy Dharma, hold Buddhist regulations in contempt, despise Buddhist monastics, deceive the kindness and sincerity of Buddhists, are all regarded as evil-doers. They are guilty of evil act so unpardonable that their descending to hell is considered lenient. Those who are guilty are regarded to have committed a heinous offence; an offence so unpardonable that they will be banished to the relentless hell and barred from reincarnation eternally.

On the contrary, those who uphold and transmit Dharma, as well as those who pass on the positive energy of Dharma, shall be protected by all Buddhas and Dharma Protectors.

*QUERY RELATING TO CHANGE OF FORTUNE*

Caller: Master Lu, during your discourse on 2nd of April, you mentioned that one’s fortune will change every three to five years; that is to say one’s fortune will only be changed every three yearly? May I ask Master Lu, do Buddhist practitioners have to wait for three to five years before our fortunes can be changed too? Or are we able to speed up the waiting time as we work on repaying our karmic debts, eliminating negative karma and accruing merits more rapidly?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Absolutely right. In general, the luck of non-practitioners will only change every three to five years. However, for Buddhist practitioners, they may only need a year or half a year and even three months to effect a change of luck. Let me cite you an example, if Master wished for something, I could change it within a few days or even a few hours; this is due to the difference in foundation and merits.

*DESIRE WILL ONLY LEAD US TO SUFFERING*

We must understand that our desires should never be taken for our hopes in life. There are many who have yearnings all their lives, “I want a television, I want a car, I want a bungalow, I want….”. These are all desires which should never be taken for our hopes in life, because unfulfilled desires will lead us to sufferings. When a person has incessant desires in life, and failed to attain what he desires, he will go through extreme sufferings. That is when all hopes are lost in life.

*WISDOM EQUATES HUMILITY AND BEING CAUTIOUS*

Caller: A Buddhist friend feels that he is not very diligent in his practice. However, other Buddhist friends, who are close to him or know him very well, had dreams indicating that he cultivates well. For example, they dreamt that he became a Bodhisattva, brought a lot of delicious food for other Buddhist friends, or had a divine power to help them. Nonetheless, he does not have such feeling of himself. What is the reason behind this?

Master Jun Hong Lu: When others say that you are good but you do not feel that way, you are indeed humble. I mentioned this during one of my recent discourses: What is wisdom? Wisdom is about being humble and cautious at all time. Humility enables a person to seek advice from others, which leads to greater knowledge gain, and that makes him a wise man. Being cautious means to work steadily to make solid progress. This approach will prevent you from making mistakes. So wisdom encompasses being humble and cautious. Understand?

Caller: I understand now, thank you Master Lu.
