*NOT WISHING FOR ANYTHING WHEN DOING RECITATIONS IS ACCUMULATING MERITS*

Caller: Master had mentioned before that recitations without wishing for anything generates the greatest merits. Some Dharma practitioners will wake up in the morning and start doing their recitations without mentioning their names or making any wishes. Is this appropriate?

Master Jun Hong Lu: When you perform recitations without seeking anything in return but merely to fulfil your homework, you will gain great merits. If today, for example, you are doing your homework because of your forthcoming exam, then you would be wishing. When you do your daily homework for the sake of its goodness, you would be accumulating merits. It is as if you are consistent in doing your homework, you would be able to pass your school exam.
You will be compromising on the quality of your recitations if you keep pondering on the unfulfilled wishes. If you are not seeking for anything today, it means you are free from desire. Cite a simple example, if you have a close friend whom you socialize daily without any hidden agenda, he will be easy going with you. Should you encounter a problem and need his help one day; he will help you without hesitation. Isn’t it right?

Caller: Yes, it is right.

Master Jun Hong Lu: If you harbour selfish thoughts when you enter into a friendship and try ways to win his favour by treating him to lunches and so on, he will naturally feel the pressure from you and will face the dilemma of whether to help you, right?
When you view from the above analogy, accumulation of virtue is derived from non-seeking and it will be transmuted into merits eventually. This explains why we frequently refer to merits as an accumulation of virtuous deeds. When you wish for something, effectively you are converting merits into blessings. Am I right?

Caller: Oh, I understand now. Thank you for answering my question, Master Lu.

*A POSITIVE MINDSET*

We must learn to govern our mindset; though difficult, it is utterly vital in the world that we live in.
With a good mindset, your life will turn out to be more pleasant. Lower that yardstick of happines, and you shall lead a happier life. Hence, it is a person's mindset that it all sums up to.

*SOFT-HEARTEDNESS STEM FROM AN UNSETTLED HEART – RECITE MORE _HEART SUTRA_*

Caller: At times, I find myself to be rather soft-hearted. May I know what sutras/mantras should I recite?

Master Jun Hong Lu: In fact, it doesn't matter whether you are soft or cold-hearted. The crux of the problem lies in your inability to discern good from bad. Soft-heartedness is only a manifestation - a person’s behavioural language. However, at the core, it is the heart that is unsettled. Once your heart is settled, you will no longer be soft-hearted. Recite more *_Heart Sutra_*

*RECITING LITTLE HOUSE ON STREET*

Q: When there are many pedestrians around us while walking on the street, can we recite sutras and mantras of Little House?

A: Recite within your heart to prevent foreign spirits from taking it away. With complexity of the surrounding energy field, if you recite aloud, your positive energy field will be dispersed.

*HOW TO CULTIVATE MAGNANIMITY*

Caller: Master Lu, how do we cultivate magnanimity in our lives? I understand that by fostering greater sympathy and compassion, we can cultivate magnanimity. In addition to that, are there any other aspects through which we can achieve the same?

Master Jun Hong Lu: To cultivate magnanimity, one should learn to endure humiliation, and learn to have self-regulation of his mentality. These are all very important.

*RETRIBUTION FOR USING IMAGES OF ANCIENT FAMOUS CHARACTERS IN VIOLENT GAMES IS TO BE CONSIGNED TO HELL*

Caller: Master Lu, nowadays, many people are playing games that involved fighting or killing of lives. Some of these animated games are created using images of famous ancient characters, such as Xiang Yu, Zhao Yun, Guan Yu, Da Mo and Confucius. The gamers play by manipulating those characters to fight amongst themselves. Will there be any repercussions for such gamers and its creators per se?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Extremely serious karmic consequences. They will be consigned to hell.

Caller: There are plentiful of such games nowadays.

Master Jun Hong Lu: It is strictly forbidden to make use of any famous ancient characters in gaming. Thus, do not play with such games. Playing with such games will lead to obsessions and land you in trouble.

*PLAYING GREAT COMPASSION MANTRA BY GRAND CHOIR WHILE BURNING LITTLE HOUSE, TO PREVENT SNATCHING BY WANDERING SOULS*

Caller: Master Lu, you mentioned before that we could softly play the “Great Compassion Mantra By Grand Choir” 24 hours at home. So, when we are burning Little House, do we need to turn it off temporarily? Or, it is alright to leave it on? Please enlighten us, Master Lu.

Master Jun Hong Lu : It is not necessary. "The Great Compassion Mantra sang by the Grand Choir" is very good. I have assessed the energy field within. It is very good. It is able to enhance…let me quote an example. At the Government Office in feudal China, there were 2 rows of guards standing on both sides. They would call out “WEI WU…"
("Mighty") [when the Magistrate stepped in]. That sounds sovereign, doesn’t it? So, if you have the Great Compassion Mantra playing while burning Little House, the wandering spirits will not come near.

Caller: I understand.

Master Jun Hong Lu: However, only the one with the name written will come to claim for it, not the wandering spirits. If it is your own karmic creditor they will come near, the others will stay away. As you have the Great Compassion Mantra playing, they would not dare to come near. Let me quote you another example, there are some who displayed a photo of police officer in their shops, it drove the thieves away upon seeing it.

Caller: Yes.

Master Jun Hong Lu: It somehow commands authority.

Caller: Alright. Thank you for answering my question, Master Lu.

*LITTLE HOUSE WITHOUT NAME OF RECIPIENT WILL BE EASILY “TAKEN AWAY” BY FOREIGN SPIRITS; NOT THE CASE WITH RECITATION OF SCRIPTURES IN HOMEWORK*

Caller: You mentioned in
<<Q & A of Buddhist Studies>>, “Though many people still objectify their prayers nowadays, we should gradually aim to make no request ultimately”. Correspondingly, off late, I noticed there are many dharma friends who do not make any prayer requests during their recitations of Homework. May I ask, when we recite *_Heart Sutra_* and *_Amitabha Pure Land Rebirth Mantra_*, without making any prayer requests, will the scriptures be more prone to being “taken away” by foreign spirits?

Master Jun Hong Lu: No, it won’t. As long as the recitation is part of your own Homework, it will not be "taken away". However, if you are performing recitation of Little House with no name, then it will be a totally different scenario.
