Foreigners among over 20 missing after tug sinks in China’s Yangtze: Xinhua

SHANGHAI — More than 20 people are missing after a tug boat sank in the Yangtze River in China’s eastern Jiangsu Province yesterday (Jan 15), the state-run Xinhua news agency reported today quoting local authorities.

Seven or eight foreigners working on the boat, including citizens of Singapore and Japan, were among the missing, it said. A French citizen may also be among the missing.

The tug was on a trial voyage when the accident happened yesterday afternoon, Xinhua said. Three people had been rescued and a search and rescue mission is underway. REUTERS

21 dead, 1 still missing after boat sinks in China’s Yangtze river: Reports

SINGAPORE — A total of 21, out of 25, people on board a tugboat that sank in China’s Yangtze River Thursday (Jan 15) have died, reported Chinese media this morning (Jan 17), citing local authorities.

One individual is still missing, reported China Radio International. Three people, all Chinese nationals, were rescued earlier.

Four Singaporeans were on board the vessel, confirmed Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs yesterday. Two were employees of Sembcorp Marine. The People's Daily Online identified the four Singaporeans as Quah Shihong, Baginda Ali bin Zainul Abidin, Chung Wai Kian Bernard and Lim You Tsern.

3 Sembcorp employees, 1 Malaysian among 22 dead in tugboat sinking

SINGAPORE — Sembcorp Marine said it is “deeply saddened” to report that three of its employees were among the 22 bodies recovered from a capsized tugboat in the Yangtze River yesterday (Jan 17).

The three employees worked for Sembcorp Marine’s tug towing subsidiary Jurong Marine Services. They are assistant manager Baginda Ali Zainul Abidin, 53, chief engineer Aif Rifadi, 41, and operations executive Bernard Chung Wai Kian, 27. Mr Baginda Ali and Mr Chung are Singaporeans, while Mr Rifadi is Indonesian.

“Management remains in touch with their families and will do our utmost to comfort, assist and support them during their grief and bereavement,” Sembcorp Marine said in a statement.

There were two other Singaporeans on board the Singapore-registered tugboat, JMS Delta, which sank on Thursday, during a trial.

Separately, Malaysia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the death of one of its nationals, Mr Cheong Kin Chin from Negeri Sembilan.

The ministry expressed its deepest condolences to his family, and said it would be facilitating the family’s travel to China. It added that the Consulate General of Malaysia in Shanghai is working closely with Chinese authorities to arrange for his body to be sent home. CHANNEL NEWSASIA
