Hong Kong student leader Joshua Wong ends hunger strike

HONG KONG — 18-year-old Joshua Wong, one of the most prominent figures in the ongoing anti-establishment movement in Hong Kong, has ended his hunger strike that began on Tuesday (Dec 2) following the advice of doctors monitoring his health.

Mr Wong said on his Facebook page that he had felt “extreme physical discomfort, dizziness and weakness in the limbs” after 108 hours with no food. He has been subsisting on only water and energy drinks, according to the South China Morning Post.

Mr Wong’s doctor Chan Shuk-ying said that Mr Wong’s sugar levels had dropped to 2.7 at one point. His heartbeat was been dangerously fast, with the highest recorded at 108, added Dr Chan.

There are three remaining students still on hunger strike. Another student, Ms Isabella Lo, announced yesterday that she would be stopping her hunger strike, also due to medical reasons.

Hong Kong protesters given Thursday deadline to clear sites

HONG KONG - Hong Kong's High Court has ordered the main protest sites that have choked the financial city for more than two months to be cleared, building up to a final showdown on Thursday between pro-democracy activists and authorities backed by Beijing.

A local bus company, which was granted an injunction against street blockades at the site in Admiralty, home to government offices and next to the main Central business district, has received an official clearance order from the High Court, according to notices posted in local papers on Tuesday.

Student groups have been calling for a free vote in the Chinese controlled city through largely peaceful demonstrations dubbed the "Umbrella Movement".

Paul Tse, the lawyer who represents the bus company, told local television the protesters should leave the area before 9 a.m. on Thursday.

Hong Kong begins clearing main pro-democracy protest camp

HONG KONG - Hong Kong authorities started on Thursday clearing the main pro-democracy protest site that has choked roads into the city's most economically and politically important district for more than two months as part of a campaign to demand free elections.

The mainly peaceful protests in the Chinese-controlled city have represented one of the most serious challenges to China's authority since the 1989 pro-democracy demonstrations and bloody crackdown in and around Beijing's Tiananmen Square.

Hundreds of police stood by in the Admiralty district next to government buildings and the Central business area as workers in construction hats used wire cutters to remove barricades erected by protesters after a court injunction two days ago.

"Everyone should follow the court order and leave immediately," a bailiff said.

There was little initial resistance as scores of protesters packed up pillows, blankets and other belongings from inside their tents and prepared to leave.

HONG KONG - Hong Kong publishing tycoon Jimmy Lai, an outspoken critic of Beijing, has stepped down as editor-in-chief of the popular Apple Daily after being arrested for refusing to leave a key pro-democracy protest site in the center of the city.

Hong Kong police arrested nearly 250 activists on Thursday and cleared most of the main protest site near the Central business district, marking an end to more than two months of street demonstrations in the Chinese-controlled city.

Public broadcaster RTHK said on Friday all of those arrested, including Lai, had been released.

Lai, a self-made millionaire, has been the main financial patron of the pro-democracy movement since Hong Kong's 1997 handover to Communist Party rulers in China.

HONG KONG — Hong Kong officials will clear the last occupation site in pro-democracy protests today, ending more than two months of road blockades in the city that have disrupted traffic and sparked violent clashes between the police and demonstrators.

The police will “exercise powers conferred by the law to remove the obstacles” in the popular shopping area of Causeway Bay, Police Chief Superintendent Hui Chun-tak said. They will give a media briefing at about 9.30am today before proceeding, Mr Hui said.
