Case study 2... Trading vs Investing

OSIM ($1.96) - Crabcrab has did a posting on OSIm when it was at $1.80. After so many postings and discussions of 'concerns' and and airing 'views' of this company after this company was traded at $1.80, the next lesson to learn is that did we act fast on it or did we have too much concern that we missed such golden oppotunity? Did we have the foresight and guts feeling to follow through + luck to take into such rare opportunity when an opportunity to buy/sell arise if we take in a trading position? The true fact is that it has risen from $1.80 to $1.96 within a few days. This is where we called a window of rare opportunity for a 'trading' stock. We need price difference or volatility and don't think too much of the intrinsic value in it. We just need to focus on the current and supply and demand that make the price volatility. Who short the shares? Guessing the no. of shares the shortists on hands or are they likely to be borrowed shares? In contrary, look at the price performance of those 'value' stock during the same period like 'Hiap Hoe' and 'Bonvest'. The price just stagnant there as there are no catalyst for price movement. Again, the question asked, so is ourselves a trader or investor?

Lesson 2 ends...... Smile

Osim ($1.96) - By the way, demand and supply should be almost in equilibrium at current price level and noticed the sell down and buy up recently. Any further up or down of price movement from current level will affect share supply and demand equilibration again.... All the best once again..

A luxury tea room at the upscale IFC Mall in Central may have to change its name after it lost a court appeal yesterday in a trademark dispute with a tea and coffee supplier.

The logo of Singapore-based TWG Tea Company and TWG Tea (HK) Company resembled the one used by Hong Kong's Tsit Wing Group, the Court of Appeal found. Both sides had also registered trademarks using the letters "TWG".

"From the viewpoint of an average customer, there is a high degree of similarity between the marks of [Tsit Wing] and the signs used by [TWG] at the tea salon," Court of Appeal vice-president Mr Justice Johnson Lam Man-hon wrote in the judgment, released yesterday.

"There is also a high degree of similarity between the goods for which the marks are registered and the goods and services offered by [TWG] in using the signs."

Lam, along with Mr Justice Aarif Barma and Mr Justice Ian McWalters, upheld a lower court's order for TWG to change its business name in Hong Kong.

TWG Tea has room to pursue another appeal at the Court of Final Appeal. A spokesman said the company was consulting with its legal counsel and declined to comment further on the matter.

According to the judgment, Tsit Wing started out in Hong Kong in 1932, dealing in the wholesale supply of coffee and tea products.

Since 2006, the group has registered two sets of trademarks using its initials, TWG.

The Singaporean company's main business is in operating tea shops, and it has outlets in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, London, New York and Tokyo.

It began using TWG as its name, standing for The Wellness Group, in 2008. It expanded its business to Hong Kong in 2011.

In December that year, Tsit Wing launched a lawsuit after the Singaporean company started its business in the city. The group alleged that the TWG Tea logo in its goods and services was likely to cause confusion to customers.

The High Court heard from TWG Tea's lawyer that the company had a "plan B" to use another registered logo containing the acronym "TW", to which Tsit Wing had no objection.

The court ruled in July last year that TWG Tea had infringed upon Tsit Wing's trademark, and ordered it to change its name for its Hong Kong business.

Been studying the latest set of figures; looks OK for a company investing into future growth. Net profit growth is flat, but I estimate that out of the $23M CAPEX, around half of that was for growth of the TWG outlets. So if we count the balance as maintenance CAPEX, some growth is still visible, albeit a tad slower than before. Any views from VBs?

Osim sees 1Q profit after tax sink 53% to $14 million on absence of new products

SINGAPORE (May 5): Osim International, the retailer of luxury massage chairs, saw the halving of its 1Q profit after tax to $14 million from $29 million a year ago.

Correspondingly, earnings per share for the quarter came in at 14 cents.

Revenue fell 13% to $150 million while operating EBITDA fell 45% to $23 million.

“This has been a challenging quarter where retail sales across the core countries has been soft and there have been no new major Osim product launches,” said the group in its SGX filing.

Despite these challenges, Osim said its dominant branding has enabled it to maintain a stable gross margin and highly cash generative business.

Operating cash flow for 1Q came in at $18 million.

“With the upcoming planned new product launches we remain positive about the outlook for the remainder of the year,” said Osim.

Its directors have recommended an interim dividend of 1 cent per share.

Osim closed four cents lower at $1.93 today.
