This reporter deserves respect. We need more of these hands-on investigative reporting rather than coffee shop talks or big macro view from the ivory tower.

In Part Two of a three-part series, Toh Yong Chuan steps into the shoes of a Singapore taxi driver.

Last week, he reported on his stint as a security guard.

To prepare to be a cabby, he signed up for a two-week taxi driving course conducted by the Singapore Taxi Academy, and cleared a series of written tests. Taxi operator SMRT agreed to let him have a four-month-old Toyota Prius taxi for a fortnight rent-free, with all his takings donated to The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund.

Next week, Yong Chuan will describe working with the elderly.

But 2 weeks is too short to call anything. Just like u come to my home town, and you start to say it is nice and peaceful. Try stay there for 2 years, then u will come back with different story. I have taxi driver friends who told me about the wonderful job of been a taxi driver. I ask him about the problems he face. He told me it all base on your experience, where to go and when and what to look out for to pick up your fare. He was a former executive in SIA, after golden hand shake, has been driving taxi for 3 years. He claim this is the best job he ever has. It all base on experience. Definitely, 2 weeks of driving experience, is too short a time for any meaningful conclusion. jmo.

Agree, but better insights than no experience. Just like meeting management is better feel than just reading AR, but not sure-proof.

Singapore

TAXI fares could soon be raised in a move aimed at improving cabbies' income and at retaining drivers.

There is speculation that market leaders Comfort and CityCab are planning an increase in the flagdown fare to S$3.80, with the meter adding 30 cents for every 400m travelled....

I reckon if you are not sure, the best approach is to wait till you are reasonable sure. Otherwise you might be scared off, by a blip of share price, and loss money.

I am wondering why not using the existing phone platform, but a proprietary apps? May be the MDTs will generate rental income. Since it comes with taxi meter unit, I reckon Taxi driver can't opt it out...

ComfortDelgro upgrades taxi fleet’s mobile data terminals

SINGAPORE (June 24): ComfortDelgro Corporation ( Financial Dashboard), the country’s biggest taxi fleet operator, is upgrading mobile data terminals in its taxis to speed up the processing of taxi bookings.

The company will install more than 6,000 X-One Mobile Data Terminals (MDTs), which has a processing speed twice as fast as the old units, in its taxis over the next nine months, the company said in a press statement.

The X-One MDT is an all-in-one system that wirelessly connects the booking despatch system to the taxi. It also acts as a built-in taxi meter-cum-payment system.

The first batch of 100 MDTS was installed in April. The second batch of 1,900 terminals will be installed by August followed by the final batch which will be installed by the first quarter of next year.

ComfortDelGro has a fleet of 16,855 taxis in Singapore and catered a record 36.5 million booking jobs last year.

As at 12.39 p.m., ComfortDelgro is up 1 cent from yesterday’s close of $3.20.
