Singapore launches fraud hotline
SINGAPORE — A hotline to report possible cases of insurance fraud is launching tomorrow (Dec 20), the General Insurance Association of Singapore (GIA) announced today.
The GIA said that customers and members of the public to call the hotline — 1800–44–37283 or “GI-FRAUD” — to alert the association of possible cases of insurance fraud. The GIA said that the problem is persistent, particularly in the motor insurance sector.
The general insurance industry suffered S$140 million in losses last year.
The GIA Anti-Fraud Committee is campaigning to educate the public on fraudulent motor insurance claims and its repercussions. It is also tracking these claims with the use of data analytics and advocating legislative measures to address the problem.
General insurance companies have also started setting up their own investigative units dedicated to detecting and fending off fraud.
“We have to bear in mind that the cost of insurance fraud to insurers is a cost to everyone because industry losses from fraud must be recouped,” said GIA Executive Director Derek Teo.
He added: “Insurance fraud ... is everybody’s concern because we all pay the price. We seek cooperation from members of the public to help us in preventing and combating this problem by alerting us of any potential cases of insurance fraud by calling the hotline.”
The GIA encourages motorists and members of the public to call the hotline when they have information on suspected fraudulent claims filed with motor insurers, when they have been offered money by touts to submit inflated or fraudulent claims to motor insurers, or when they have factual evidence that they are a victim of a staged accident.
The hotline is open to offer assistance to the public every weekday, from 9am to 5pm.
