I agree. Especially assistance for students. In Singapore, a child will be provided for education no matter how poor his family is.

My brother and I received numerous bursaries from the government when we were primary and secondary students. When my brother went to poly, he also received bursaries.

Welfare statet, poverty level is not a main concern for me.

My only wish is education should be make available to all (poor especially).

Plus Health care should also be available to all (compassion).

My uncle has two young children in primary school. He earns less than 2k per month. My two cousins got free uniform and textbooks every single year.

And when they look back, they must remember those years of free uniforms and textbooks, just like generations before them.

There's a lot of people who think that it is good to have a poverty line but my question is, would the drawing of this line encourages people to simply seek assistance from the government instead of working hard? Since government is paying for my well-being, I don't mind just staying at home and laze around. Is it good to encourage such a behaviour especially when he is able-body? He can work hard but simply too lazy to do so.

Lets not be too engross with the abuse but rather do what we think is fit to help out.

In any case, we own it to others to bring us up to par today and we should lead by contributing back to society.

If the GOV also done its duty, then we have double layer of protection.

If not, at least we had already done our part.

Hopefully the playing field is level. When it comes to education, the text bk and uniform is a small part. Its the right thing that moe is ensuring the poor get the basic support for receiving educations. Many foreigen students are entering our poly & undergrads base on their country education system results, which hardly can match the gruelling and throughness system we have here. Local students are squeezed to compete for the poly/uni places allocated for locals. competitiveness sure get tougher and tougher. When I see the cut off for poly, i was a bit shocked some courses are 10pts below.
