SSD might be more expensive now in terms of unit price per GB but they will surely become cheaper as technology catches up. So demand for HDD will drop. Just look at thumbdrives, memory cards, etc. They were much expensive when they were introduced but now are cheaper with larger capacities.

Even if poorer countries use HDD in the future, how much demand will there be compared to the rest of the world which is affluent and most probably will buy SSD?

My take is that the more SSDs that a person owned the bigger the HDD that a person will have to buy.
And most likely, the growth of the HDD size is likely to outrun SSD in the next 10 years.
At least that is the conclusion from researchers from Carnegie mellon.

The most likely scenario is the coexistence of both HDDs and SSDs. Every home system will have many computing devices running SSDs but all the computing devices will require backup to the HDDs either at home or in some cloud storage next time.

Besides, most of us are probably unawared that for every post in valuebuddies, every facebook messages, every photo upload, every youtube video upload, every email, every phone call, every sms message or even every click, we are using some HDD space in some server farms in the world. And, the growth of these online activities are exponential and the only mean of storing them and retrieving them is to use HDD. The server guys will love to use SSDs but it is simply not an option now(not in the next 10 years) due to costs.

So, even though a person may not have a single HDD at home, he will still contribute to HDD demand due to personal online activities and backup.

the 3 SG cents declared/gg to be declared for the fy that just passed was a real one..
i have been enjoying good dividends from adampak since its ipo..
in a way, both challenger and adampak are indirect beneficiaries of consumers' demand for technology advances/products..one doing IT retail while the other providing supporting parts..

good sharing yeokiwi. At least now I am convinced that HDD will be the leading trend until 2020 with 14TB as far as cost is concerned. I have always assumed that there are difficulties to further push the limits of magnetic storage.

In this discussion of HDDs vs. SSDs, I think we must bear in mind that producers of HDDs now contribute about 50% of Adampak's business volume/revenue, with the remaining about 50% contributed by a host of other industries and this portion is increasing.

We should also bear in mind the the battle between HDDs and SSDs is really fought between the producers of HDDs and SSDs, and they tend to be merging over time. So even if HDDs were to disappear entirely from the earth, Adampak's business of converting various types of materials from 3M (and others) into useful precision labels and die-cut parts and supplying to various industries which supply goods to the world market, should not be hurt so badly as technologies and markets evolve over time. On the contary, it is more likely that Admpak's business and profits will continue to increase over time, as the application of the underlying technology behind labels and die-cut parts spread wider afield to most industries and many more consumer/industrial products worldwide.

Hey Taka and SGmystique,

Do you guys think we should wait until after the AGM or we can do to before to arrange this meet-up session?

Meanwhile, all interested parties, do indicate your interest. I'm sure the management at Adampak will be kind enough to entertain vested interests in their company at a time convenient to us while those non-vested but interested to know more can ride on those vested. However, as a shareholder, I also don't want to see management spending too much entertaining shareholders rather than getting real work done. Tongue

I'll contact Kamal as suggested by Dydx in my personal capacity and get a feel of the response from them.

I think we can meet the management a few days after the AGM as they would be much more prepared as compared to meeting them before the AGM. But pls note, I can only meet on weekends or weekdays after 5pm.

Yes HDDs are likely to continue dominate due to the cheaper cost per GB. In fact, nowadays tapes are still very widely used for offline & long term data storage in data centers due to its cheaper cost per GB, although disk-based backups are gaining market shares in data backup industry over recent years.

By the look of the seemingly steady accumulation in the past 5 weeks, I feel Adampak's share price is poised to advance further and possibly scale a new recent high of $0.36 (recorded on 4Jan11) in the next few weeks.

There are 4 known catalyst events that will support it - (1) the release of the FY10 AR within the next 2 weeks; (2) the coming AGM to be held by 30Apr11; (3) the payment of the $0.02/share FY10 Final dividend on 26May11, with the 'XD' date already fixed on 9May11; and (4) the release of the Q1-FY11 results - I suppose it is reasonable to expect at least a steady performance! - by 15May11.
