Google Glass: Facial recognition coming soon

LONDON — The controversial Google Glass computer can now recognise who you are talking to thanks to a new “hack”.

The new software from Lamda Labs, who are based in San Francisco, raises the prospect of never forgetting a face again, and also of internet recommendations for who Google Glass wearers should meet at large social gatherings. It will launch to computer programmers in days, the Daily Telegraph reported.

Update on google glass...

Google bans facial recognition apps for Glass

MOUNTAIN VIEW — Google Glass is currently being trialled by ‘Explorers’ as the company tries to perfect it for a commercial launch and bids to understand public concerns.

In an announcement on Glass’s Google+ page, the company said, “When we started the Explorer Programme nearly a year ago our goal was simple: We wanted to make people active participants in shaping the future of this technology ahead of a broader consumer launch. We’ve been listening closely to you, and many have expressed both interest and concern around the possibilities of facial recognition in Glass. As Google has said for several years, we won’t add facial recognition features to our products without having strong privacy protections in place. With that in mind, we won’t be approving any facial recognition Glassware at this time.”

Update on Google Glass....

First game for Google Glass casts people as ants

Illnois — The first massively multiplayer online (MMO) game for Google Glass, which casts human players as members of an ant colony that complete tasks as they go about their daily lives, is in development.

Developed by philosophy professor at Illinois State University Daniel Estrada and Mr Jonathan Lawhead of Columbia University, Swarm! begins as the player leaves their house in the morning wearing Glass.

Using GPS data collected by Glass, the game tracks players as they go about their daily routine. Players’ movements are then mapped out as colourful trails on a map.

An interesting case...

Driver expects to fight Google Glass traffic ticket in US

LOS ANGELES — An early adopter of Google’s Internet-connected eyeglasses plans to fight a citation for wearing the device while driving in the United States, saying in an interview yesterday (Oct 31) that the technology makes navigation easier than smartphones and GPS devices.

Driver Cecilia Abadie was pulled over for speeding on Tuesday evening in San Diego, when a California Highway Patrol officer noticed she was wearing Google Glass and tacked on a citation usually given to drivers who may be distracted by a video or TV screen.

A challenge to what may be a first-of-its-kind citation could force authorities to re-examine laws and consider how best to regulate evolving gadgetry that will one day become mainstream.

Don't quite understand....if she is pulled over and given ticket for speeding, then it does not matter whether she was wearing Google glass or blindfolded - easier to navigate than GPS not withstanding.

The case arises because the California Highway Patrol officer didn't issue ticket for speeding, but a distraction by Google Glass. He/She has unintentionally done Google a favour to iron out the grey area...Big Grin

California motorist cleared in Google Glass case

SAN DIEGO — A San Diego traffic court threw out a citation yesterday (Jan 16) against a woman who authorities said was driving while wearing the Google Glass computer-in-eyeglass device.

Commissioner John Blair ruled that Ms Cecilia Abadie was not guilty because the code she was cited for requires proof that the device was in operation.

Mr Blair found there was no proof beyond a reasonable doubt.

Ms Abadie is believed to be the first motorist cited for wearing Google Glass while driving. She was also found not guilty of speeding.

Google Glass available in US as of April 15
11 Apr 2014 06:54
[SAN FRANCISCO] Google will makes it controversial Internet-linked Glass eyewear available for purchase for a limited time in the United States beginning on April 15.

Anyone in the United States with US$1,500 to spend on Glass will be able to join the ranks of "explorers" who have gotten to test out the devices prior to them hitting the market, the California-based Internet titan said Thursday in a post at Google+ social network.

"Our Explorers are moms, artists, surgeons, rockers, and each new Explorer has brought a new perspective that is making Glass better," Google said in the post.

"But every day we get requests from those of you who haven't found a way into the program yet, and we want your feedback too." On April 15, Google will commence what it billed as the biggest expansion of the Explorer program to date by letting anyone in the US buy the eyewear online at google.com/glass/start/how-to-get-one/ .

Google said online sales would take place "for a limited time," but did not specify how long that might be.
