The ideal situation would be to talk to the management and board before buying the stock. But unless you are some big fish, it's counter productive for them to entertain you. Your few $k is just not worth their time and hence the only way for small fish to "meet the management" is the general meeting. Here we have a catch 22. But do get ready your CV because some may be quite free.
For retail investors, there are just so much you can extract from the meeting. Business is business and if it is one that an idiot can run, then it doesn't matter who runs it. To me, it's really to smell them close up. If they stink unmistakably, stay away.
Other times, it is an avenue for laze. Go there and hear what other shareholders have to say. See if they make sense and if you have missed out important matters.
After a while, we know who serve better buffet.
Ha! Ha!
Who serve better buffet leh? In every sense of the question. i may really want to attend for the first time in my life, if i happen to be one of the ikan bilis share holder. i am serious. Care to share?

the buffet phenomenon is the worst thing abt the AGMs - it is completely a disgrace. It is also amazing that a bunch of retirees looking so frail can suddenly turn into a bunch of ferocious hunters climbing over one another to reach the tables.
the CapitaLand group of AGMs have the best arrangement - one voucher for a refreshment pack.
But i do wonder how small the attendances of the AGMs will be like if there are none of these food-seeking retirees...
Though what you say is the truth, i can tell you it is the same with 20 to 30 to 40 to 50 somethings at any buffet party.
i can tell you this because i have had attended company's annual dinners that serve buffet.
There will always be this group of younger people, so well attired and the "lots", who rush for food. That's why i try not to attend any buffet party if i know before hand. i barely can have any food.
So you see we are all human beings. At the sight of food and FOC, and what's more; we are famous for the 4Ks. Some of us really can't help ourselves. WE all have our own weaknesses. i like good food too but i want to enjoy in a different atmosphere.

Attended OUE AGM at Mandarin Orchard, they served the famous "Chatterbox" Chicken Rice. Yummy!! But I think many people thought it was cheap stuff (like $3 hawker chicken rice) so didn't rush for it. But the crowd behaviour was ok. Ha ha.
Then I attended Hotel Properties AGM. Disgraceful. Although the obedient Singaporeans queued for the buffet, the food ran out when less than half the people were fed. All hell broke loose when they brought out the small (about 75ml) cups of Haagen Daaz ice cream. Suddenly I found myself being pushed off my feet, not knowing what was happening. Then I realised the waiter had brought out a tray of the ice cream just 2 meters from me. Stampede by the retirees. Utterly disgraceful, like a bunch of dogs.
So it depends on the company. Super and Food Empire will give away free coffee, but no buffet. I liked former Food Empire CEO Tan Wang Cheow because he is very forthcoming with information and sharing about the company and strategy, and he has a passion for the business (these things you cannot tell from the annual report, but by reading his body language in person). He also interacts with the shareholders freely during refreshments.
Blue Chip CEOs tend not to be so friendly.

I never attended an AGM in Singapore and have a practical question. How do I identify myself as a company shareholder at the entrance of the venue ?
I don't live in Singapore, but I do have the shares in CDP in my own name. Should I bring a printout of this or is just my passport enough ?

I have no issue with how much they can eat, but I can't tolerate them packaging it back at the same time. At one AGM I attended, a group of old folks clear out the tray of plain rice, maybe they intended to bring home for fried rice. It is hard to educate these group of people, so more and more companies are issuing lunch box instead. No need to rush, one person one box.

Ya. Lunchbox better.
This phemonmen of going to AGMs for makan and ta bao is the same in HK and Msian. Only one that don't have anything free to eat is BRK AGM.
