Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos sees ‘millions’ of people living in space

FLORIDA — Amazon.com Inc Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos envisions “millions” of people living in orbit as his exploration company, Blue Origin, and other commercial ventures develop spacecraft to make travel more widely available.

Investment from wealthy entrepreneurs with a passion for space will usher in a new era that makes leaving the Earth’s atmosphere accessible to anyone, Mr Bezos said yesterday (Sept 15).

I love Amazon - I use it a lot in London. Saved me a ton of money on both new books and second hand books.

But the valuations are crazy considering how unprofitable the core operations of Amazon. Amazon trades at 245 Bil, Wal-Mart - 210 Bil.

How much money did Wal-Mart make in 2014? - 16.3 Billion USD. Amazon? A lost of 240 Mil USD.

New initiative from the company. An interesting concept of "scattered around the house", but will US$42 price-tag low enough? (Six-pack for the price of five)

Amazon unveils budget-friendly US$50 7-inch tablet

SAN FRANCISCO — Amazon is dangling a US$50 (S$70) tablet computer in its latest attempt to lure consumers who don’t wish to splurge on more expensive tablet devices made by Apple and other rivals.

The 7-inch Fire tablet unveiled today (Sept 17) marks Amazon’s most aggressive attempt yet to undercut Apple, which has been the market leader since its first iPad went on sale five years ago. The least expensive 8-inch iPad Mini currently sells for US$270.

The Seattle company is counting on the new tablet’s low price to encourage more people to buy a device that will hook them on watching video, reading books, playing games and shopping on a computer that’s easy to carry wherever they go. In the process, Amazon is hoping consumers will buy more digital goods and merchandise from its store.

As with its previous low-priced tablets, the new Fire device will show ads on its screen saver; avoiding them will cost an additional US$15.

Amazon is hoping that the low price of the new tablet will be so appealing that people will stock up on the devices and have them scattered around the house. It plans to sell a six-pack of the 7-inch Fire tablets for the price of five.

Amazon is promising the discount tablet will have decent processing power, good colour saturation and seven hours of battery life. A more durable version designed for kids will come with a blue or pink bumper and a 2-year replacement warranty at a price-tag of $100.

This isn't confirmed by Amazon, but likely things in the pipeline. I have a particular interest on retailing. Online and brick-and-mortar physical stores serve different segments of customer. They are complimenting, rather than replacing each other...

Amazon plans to open 300-400 bookstores, says mall company CEO
03 Feb 2016 07:32
[SAN FRANCISCO] Amazon.com Inc is planning to open hundreds of brick-and-mortar bookstores, the head of a major US mall operator said.

Such an expansion, which Amazon itself has not confirmed, would position the world's No. 1 online retailer as a competitor to booksellers such as Barnes & Noble Inc. At present, Amazon operates a single bookstore in its home city, Seattle. "You've got Amazon opening brick-and-mortar bookstores and their goal is to open, as I understand, 300 to 400 bookstores," Sandeep Mathrani, chief executive of General Growth Properties Inc, said on Tuesday.

FYI, the backtrack as "not intended to represent"... Big Grin

Mall operator CEO backtracks on comments about Amazon bookstores
The CEO of a U.S. mall operator who said this week that Amazon.com Inc plans to open up to 400 physical bookstores attempted to downplay his comments on Wednesday, without specifically denying them, saying they were "not intended" to represent the online retailer's plans.

Are there any suggestions that AMZN could be about $1000 this year? Or even more?

Amazon is setting up shop in sg. And looks like they want a piece of the retail pie in South East Asia.
For a start it is likely they will do groceries. Depending on how successful they are, the local supermarkets may get hit.
And if they were to expand locally and offer almost the same prices/products and perks as the US, is any retailer safe from them?

This follows closely after Decathalon, one of the worlds biggest sporting retailer that is growing aggressively in South East Asia using Singapore as a springboard.
So like it or not the big guys are coming.
