Importing working adult foreigners to ease the aging population problem is akin to a demographic Ponzi scheme. Too many old people now. So, import more working foreigners to support the old people today. Then, when these foreigners who have converted to new citizens age and need support (not counting the old parents they bring in), resort to importing more working foreigners to solve the aging problem. Does this sound like a Ponzi scheme? Meanwhile, the Singaporean core is eroded and Singaporean society self-implodes. This is a very real risk.

If you have young colleagues who just graduate from university, ask them whether they have ever thought of migration. If you have nephews who are doing their NS, ask them how they feel about NS. Don't be surprised if they don't want to defend Singapore because they don't want to defend foreigners.

I do not disagree with the principle behind the foreign talents/workers policy. What irks Singaporeans like me is the execution of this policy. How many of you feel like foreigners in your own country during Chinese new year? Many of us even feel like foreigners in the workplace. For me personally, I was even mistaken by fellow Singaporeans as a foreigner in my own country. Are these signs that the pendulum has swung too far to one extreme and time for some correction?

I already feeling that. There are places in singapore that are hangouts for FT if you go there they will look at you like as though you are invading into their space. Even at workplace also they have laugh among themselves and talk about the "FT issue" that they read in the news media sometimes it gets really uncomfortable but there's too many of them now in the new normal and it's going to get worse.

Seng Kang and Punggol used to be majority Chinese Singaporeans. I remember, sometime last year, when I visited my brother's house and brought my daughter to the children playground, I saw so many pi*** families. And the basketball court was having a competition with pi*** teams.

1. They dont spend much
2. They compare prices with prices back in home town
3. If they don't earn > $30,000 a year, they dont pay much income taxes.

The other group, they live and spend more... More the party lots.

I hope you know what u r talking about.
The 'category of workers' (that u labeled) are the ones who are building the houses, widening the expressways, cleaning the roads and in retail service roles...Many of these roles are shunned by Sporeans and u dont get many (sporeans) attracted to it, no matter how much u glamorise or increase the sectors' pay.

On the other hand, the 'other group' (as you have labelled), live and spend more - naturally they compete with YOU for the limited resources (of luxury consumption) more, and maybe a significant contributor to the high inflation that we have experienced for the past few days.

That's true but the side tracked topic was investment angle for the 6.9m population white paper we not talking about contribution, we talking about what we can invest in that these people are going to need to use. Like food, transport, telco services, banking services, money remittance services etc ... Big Grin

Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC member of parliament Hri Kumar Nair has proposed that all permanent residents (PRs) and foreigners pay a new National Defence Duty tax and have the money placed in a trust fund for men in National Service (NS).

In a Facebook note on Wednesday morning, Nair said this would help impose similar nation-building duties on such members of the public and address “a current imbalance” of this segment of the population fleeing the country without shouldering such responsibilities.

“In short, we do duty, they pay a duty. Since PRs and foreigners cannot contribute manpower to our SAF and Home Team, they make a financial contribution to the protection and preservation of their lives, families, jobs, investments and properties,” said Nair, who is a director at law firm Drew & Napier.

Mr Nair, can i also volunteer to pay duty and seek waiver for my son to serve NS? Those rich PR and FT can easily afford your NS duty taxes unless those taxes amount to 50% of their earned income.

i think Mr HKN is out of his mind... i am a singaporean!! if NS duty can be monetised , i want to pay off my own and my sons and my grandsons NS duty!!!

in fact, why don't he suggest a COE for "Not doing" NS duty?!! hahaha!!!

This is the type of MPs that we have in parliament today, no wonder Singapore is going downhill FAST!!!

1) Try NOT to LOSE money!
2) Do NOT SELL in BEAR, BUY-BUY-BUY! invest in managements/companies that does the same!
3) CASH in hand is KING in BEAR!

While I think HKN's suggestion is poor, what are you possibly talking about? Are you just reading what you want to read?
