Nokia upbeat on prospects as sales grow

SINGAPORE — Since Microsoft announced in September it had decided to purchase Nokia’s Devices and Services division — the Finnish company’s handset business — people have wondered what was next for the once-dominant phone maker and whether it could recapture its former glory.

While Nokia’s phone division reported an operating loss of €86 million (S$149 million) in the third quarter, there are enough encouraging signs to suggest that things might be swinging in the company’s direction, said Mr Chris Weber, Nokia’s Executive Vice-President of Global Sales and Marketing.

Ford CEO not going to Microsoft

DEARBORN (Michigan) — Mr Alan Mulally is staying at Ford.

The CEO, who was rumoured to be in the running to become Microsoft’s next leader, told The Associated Press yesterday (Jan 7) that he will not leave the Dearborn, Michigan, automaker before the end of this year.

“I would like to end the Microsoft speculation because I have no other plans to do anything other than serve Ford,” Mr Mulally said in an interview.

Microsoft board close to naming Nadella as new CEO: source

NEW YORK — Microsoft is likely to appoint its cloud-computing head, Mr Satya Nadella, as its next chief executive, a source familiar with the matter said yesterday (Jan 30), as the board concludes a five-month search for a tech-savvy heavy-hitter to lead the world’s largest software company.

As part of the move, co-founder Bill Gates may step aside as chairman and be replaced by lead independent director John Thompson, said the source, speaking on condition of anonymity because the process is private. Mr Gates would remain a director, the source added.

Bloomberg first reported the news yesterday.

SEATTLE — It is official. Microsoft has confirmed Indian immigrant and company veteran Satya Nadella as its Chief Executive Officer, ending a longer-than-expected search for a leader after Mr Steve Ballmer announced his intention to retire in August.

The handset division of the Finnish company, which is in the final stages of being acquired by Microsoft, will show off the new phone at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona later this month, the report said yesterday (Feb 10), citing unidentified sources who were familiar with the matter.

if mobile computing /gaming is the new future, with every PC/Laptop being replaced by an android platform gadget, could this be the end for microsoft?? unless they can somehow takeover google?

Sounds like microsoft may be in a bit of hot water, the same way apple is going to be if they don't innovate something to compete with android/linux systems.

After all the heart of every device is the operating system.

Former Clinton aide to focus on strategy in Microsoft rejig

SEATTLE — In the biggest management reshuffle at Microsoft since Mr Satya Nadella took over as its Chief Executive, two top executives, Mr Tony Bates and Ms Tami Reller, will leave the company, while a former Clinton family aide will become its Chief Strategy Officer, according to media reports.

The shake-up is the most extensive yet for Mr Nadella, who was named CEO last month after a five-month search and is tasked with speeding up a turnaround at the world’s biggest software maker.

Former political strategist Mark Penn, who will become Chief Strategy Officer, will get a bigger hand in determining which markets Microsoft should be in and where it should be making further investments, The New York Times reported, citing a person briefed on the change.

He is currently the Executive Vice-President at Microsoft, overseeing advertising and strategy.

Mr Bates, who was passed over for the CEO job, will leave immediately, with Mr Eric Rudder, the head of advanced strategy, taking over his duties as Executive Vice-President for business development and evangelism, according to reports.

Ms Reller, one of the top female executives at the company and co-head of Microsoft’s Windows unit, will remain with the company for some time to help with the transition. She will be replaced by Chief Marketing Officer Chris Capossela.

Microsoft declined to comment. ReCode, a technology news site, earlier reported news of the executive changes at Microsoft.
