It's best for Microsoft to stay out of manufacturing business. It is okay to do a reference design or demo. It is different to compete with your major customers.

If every PC/Tablet manufacturers feel threatened by Microsoft, you can expect Windows would be drop as first choice, a possible another OS coming up.

microsoft buying dell has also to do with why I think microsoft would also be interested in HP is all about protecting their market shares. Dell bundles their products with microsoft os, office automation software, business softwares like microsoft exchange for emails and other business software products like database web applications software. Exactly the same way HP compaq bundles their products too. It's all about retaining their market share and having a vested interest in dell is a way to ensure that. Also it may make microsoft products cheaper using dell as a channel to sell products may eliminate some licensing costs for their customers.

It's true microsoft is a software and dell is a hardware company. But look at oracle it is also a software company and they bought out sun micro a server hardware company.

It's good news and if dell is able to integrate into microsoft later they may turn out to be white knights if compaq goes up for sale. Tongue

*Ouch!* Now people hold back buying Office in anticipation of new release...Tongue
Or, read their Press Release,

The Microsoft Business Division posted $5.69 billion of revenue, a 10% decrease from the prior year period. Adjusting for the impact of the Office Upgrade Offer and Pre-sales, Microsoft Business Division non-GAAP revenue increased 3% for the second quarter. Revenue from Microsoft’s productivity server offerings – collectively including Lync, SharePoint, and Exchange – continued double-digit percentage growth.

Microsoft launches new Office for home users

SEATTLE — Microsoft yesterday launched new Office software for home users, featuring constantly updated, online access to documents from all kinds of devices as the world’s largest software company attempts to tailor its most profitable product to a mobile generation.

The new Office suite of applications — including desktop staples Outlook, Excel, Word and PowerPoint — is aimed at home users rather than businesses, and is designed to extend Microsoft’s domination of the workplace to the home office and beat back growing competition from Google’s free online apps.

Microsoft search deal is underperforming, says Yahoo CEO

SAN FRANCISCO — Yahoo chief executive Marissa Mayer said the company’s search partnership with Microsoft was not delivering the market share gains or the revenue boost that it should.

“One of the points of the alliance is that we collectively want to grow share rather than just trading share with each other,” Mayer said at the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference in San Francisco on Tuesday.

EU fines Microsoft S$910m for breaking browser pact

AMSTERDAM — The European Union has fined Microsoft €561 million (S$910 million) for breaking a pledge to offer personal computer users a choice of Internet browsers when they install the company’s flagship Windows operating system.

The penalty imposed by the EU’s executive arm, the Commission, is a first for Brussels: No company has ever failed to keep its end of a bargain with EU authorities before.

the EU fine is really ridiculous in today's context.

There is no such browser war like last time, when IE beat others unfairly....
