The prices are higher though but after years of stagnant economy, Japan tours are surprising much affordable than before.

The restaurant prices are about the same as Singapore but the quality of food is much higher.
Accommodation costs can be cheap or expensive but a good clean hotel room for two adults is around S$150.

Oh yes, i had been to Hokkaido. If you ask me what is most impressive of the Japanese i would say the way they maintain the cleanliness of their toilets. Even the public toilets at any places full of tourists. i take my hat to their cleanliness and their public spirit of co-operation in using them "properly".

with the exception of japan if you go anywhere else in asia especially in the ulu places don't expect too much from the toilets.

Many years ago at a highway stopover in china during height of winter the toilet was just a drain with a big 'gong' of water next to it you get the picture what you suppose to do to flush ? Big Grin

inside the drain was a huge pile of crap ever seen ice frozen crap during winter time it looks surreal the brown clashing with all the white color Big Grin

Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea are ok but they are not at the standard of Japan(I think none of the countries in this world is).
The touristy areas in Beijing, Shanghai are quite ok but not the touristy areas of those 2nd-tier cities.
I had been to Lao Shan in Qingdao before. It was so easy to locate the toilets. The smell easily covered a circular area of radius 100m.

Singapore, being a developed country, has miles to catchup with Japan and many western countries for public toilet standard.
For those parents with kids in primary schools, what do you think of the school's toilet standard?
I think my kid's primary school toilet sucks.
It does not bode well for the future of our public toilets in our kids have to put up with dirty toilets.

Sound frightening Tongue

Nowadays, the facilities improved especially on highway around 1st tier cities e.g. Beijing and Shanghai. Not comparable with japan, but acceptable to me.

Qingdao! Ah......... Beside the well known Qingdao beer sold in Singapore, the "Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto" as orchestra music was played by a very talented concert master as 1st violinist from Qingdao in 1969.

Original violin composition year:- 1958
1st time played:- 1959 in Shanghai
Beautiful classical music will never die.

i may plug up my courage to visit Qingdao. Ha! Ha!
Shalom.

temperament,

Qingdao is not bad. Former German concession so it's a more "modern" version of China.

No bicycle traffic and generally less crowded. Great for slow and easy vacationing. Drink beer and enjoy the beach. (I know not for you; but chatting up the 1.8 metre tall northern beauties was fun! Talk only no touching kind hor!)

By the way, visit Lao Shan with low expectations. There's a local saying:

Don't visit Lao Shan regret; after visiting Lao Shan lagi regret!

I found out why after going there myself. LOL!

P.S. If it's beach resort you after, Dalian could be a better choice Wink
Just google singapore man of leisure

ya.. it is kind of waste of time visiting Lao Shan.haha..
The city is good despite being a 2nd-tier city. The food is cheap. The beer is cheap. The transport is cheap.

Toilet experiences vary widely in the city but it should be tolerable for men.
