Corporate market is the target for mobile platform...
BlackBerry uses IBM software to make Samsung tablets spy-proof
BERLIN — BlackBerry has introduced a tablet computer aimed at government and corporate customers that it says can let users access consumer applications such as YouTube and WhatsApp while keeping confidential work-related information away from spies and crooks.
The SecuTABLET, shown at the CeBIT conference in Hanover, Germany, is based on Samsung Electronics’s Tab S 10.5 and uses International Business Machines software to wrap applications that hold secrets into a virtual container where they can’t be harmed by malware. Germany’s computer-security watchdog is certifying the device for classified government communication, BlackBerry’s Secusmart unit said yesterday (March 14).

from a TA perspective, BBRY looks somewhat bearish and with upcoming FY2015's results on 27 March 2015, would be interesting to see if the company can surprise. analysts seemed to be quite negative on the company, especially on their recently launched products, Passport and Classic.
if they are able to provide some strong guidance for FY2016, supported by tangible developments in their software business, it could present some decent upside. this is not to mention the short squeeze effect that may kick in as well.
any thoughts on BBRY?

BlackBerry announces a new round of layoffs
Montreal (AFP) - BlackBerry is laying off an unspecified number of workers around the world as the struggling smartphone manufacturer tries to make its device business profitable.
The Canadian company, based in Waterloo, Ontario, said the cuts will impact those working on the software, hardware and applications side of the business.
"As the company moves into its next stage of the turnaround, our intention is to reallocate resources in ways that will best enable us to capitalize on growth opportunities while driving toward sustainable profitability across all facets of our business," BlackBerry said in a statement to AFP on Saturday.
A spokeswoman declined to provide additional information about the cuts.

This is a news from grapevine. If it is true, I reckon the company has given up on its own line of BB phones.

Exclusive: BlackBerry may put Android system on new device: sources
TORONTO - BlackBerry is considering equipping an upcoming smartphone with Google Inc.'s Android software for the first time, an acknowledgement that its revamped line of devices has failed to win mass appeal, according to four sources familiar with the matter.
The move would be an about-face for the Waterloo, Ontario-based company, which had shunned Android in a bet that its BlackBerry 10 line of phones would be able to claw back market share lost to Apple's iPhone and a slew of devices powered by Android.

Blackberry is becoming less unique...
Android to run new Blackberry phone
OTTAWA (Ontario) – Struggling for relevance in the smartphone business, BlackBerry is turning to Google’s popular mobile software for a helping hand.
BlackBerry said yesterday (Sept 25) that it would make a phone that runs the Android operating system, confirming a rumour that has been circulating for months. The company released another sour earnings report yesterday as well that underscored the importance of finding a successful product.
The move to Android should address at least one limitation of the appeal of BlackBerry’s smartphone: A lack of apps. The Android phone will be able to run the more than 1 million apps already created for that software.

WhatsApp to drop support for Blackberry OS app
LONDON — In what is yet another nail in a firmly closed coffin, WhatsApp has announced that it will drop support for its BlackBerry app by the end of this year.
The messaging app used by more than 1 billion people said that it would end support for the once all-conquering smartphone, as well as older versions of Nokia, Android and Windows Phone software.
Despite their gradual fade into obscurity, BlackBerries still have a following among fans of tactile keyboards and reliable email services. Mr David Cameron admitted to still using one last year, and Kim Kardashian has been a vocal supporter of the keyboard-enabled handsets.
Although BlackBerry’s most recent device, the Priv, runs Android, it was still releasing devices running its own operating system last year, so the (presumably small) number of people who bought one will be without WhatsApp in 10 months’ time.

BlackBerry downplays Toyota's use of rival software
06 Jun 2017 09:47
[TORONTO] BlackBerry Ltd on Monday downplayed news that Toyota Motor Corp would adopt rival software for its future vehicle consoles, saying it was more focused on the faster-growing market for autonomous driving technology.Automotive Grade Linux (AGL), a collaborative effort of some 100 technology companies and automakers, said last week that Toyota would start using its open-source software in Entune 3.0 consoles of its 2018 Camry sedans, before deploying it in most Toyota and Lexus vehicles sold in North America.BlackBerry Chief Operating Officer Marty Beard said in a blog posting that he expected AGL - as well as regular Linux and Android - to take a share of the automotive infotainment market, where BlackBerry's QNX is a dominant supplier

BlackBerry Shares Jump as Licensing Revenue Picks Up Steam
By Gerrit De Vynck
September 28, 2017, 7:16 PM GMT+8 Updated on September 28, 2017, 11:01 PM GMT+8
BlackBerry Ltd. shares soared Thursday after record software revenue helped earnings beat analysts’ estimates, reassuring investors that the former smartphone maker is succeeding in a pivot away from hardware and will hit growth targets this fiscal year.
The second-quarter results suggest a disappointing performance in the first quarter that sent the stock plummeting was an exception rather than the rule in Chief Executive Officer John Chen’s attempts to build a growing, profitable software company. BlackBerry shares gained 13 percent to $10.44 at 10:10 a.m. in New York, its biggest intraday gain since April.
Chen has spent the last several years winding down the company’s phone business and replacing it with software through acquisitions. This quarter, BlackBerry won new customers like UBS Group AG for its main enterprise software products, but the real boost to revenue this quarter came from its licensing business, which brought in $56 million, 250 percent more than the same time last year.
