Rail operators SMRT and SBS Transit stand to face much heftier fines for train disruptions in future, after Parliament passed a Bill on Monday to raise the maximum penalty to 10 per cent of the annual fare revenue of a rail line.

That could be many times higher than the current cap of $1 million for each incident.

I don't see why the government should be blamed for private sector failings.

Question goes back to whether public transport should be nationalized. If its private sector, why then would the tax payers bearing 1 billion dollars to buy buses?

Because the fare is regulated, and commuters doesn't want to pay, so gov has to "subsidize". Big Grin

Gov has to subsidize (I officially stand on the other side of the fence to say this).

"Don't be too disappointed" if your journey takes longer with more people on wheelchairs if you see them in buses and Mrts. Probably the bus driver would have to get off his driver's seat, to lower the ramp for wheelchair user. (Else volunteers with valid license do this.)

The ideas posted here are highly independent of the "target", however they might be instructed for a KPI, since I don't know any better... (And if the bus company ends up losing a little bit more money because of these oncoming, but likely inevitable inconveniences which occurs to the rest of the users.)

SBST is having its "fair share of disruption"... It happened even among newer line! May be it is not just the maintenance issue, but a deeper one than that e.g. design?

Downtown MRT line service disrupted for 30 mins

INGAPORE — A power fault caused a disruption of train services on the entire stretch of the Downtown Line between 9.50am and 10.20am today (March 7).

Rail operator SBS Transit activated free bus rides at designated stops near all the affected stations.

The Downtown Line (DTL) is Singapore’s fifth MRT line. The first stage of the DTL opened on Dec 21, with six stations — Chinatown, Telok Ayer, Downtown, Bayfront, Promenade and Bugis — on 4.3km stretch. CHANNEL NEWSASIA

A new normal, and it seems the power system is the culprit...

Power fault disrupts train services between Hougang and Dhoby Ghaut

SINGAPORE — Train services along the North East Line (NEL) between Hougang and Dhoby Ghaut were disrupted for over 30 minutes yesterday afternoon due to a power fault, affecting about 5,900 passengers.

The fault, which occurred at 3.54pm, was caused by a power trip at Potong Pasir Station, said operator SBS Transit. Engineers were despatched there to reset the power system.

The power fault also caused a train heading towards Punggol to come to a stop just as it entered Potong Pasir Station, leading to a misalignment between the station’s platform screen doors and the train doors.

“As a result, passengers had to be detrained from the last door and guided by station staff to the nearby station,” said SBS Transit.

The cause of the power fault is still being investigated.
