Facebook's messenger could one day be bigger than Facebook
LOS ANGELES — Facebook is now allowing users in some countries to sign up for its Messenger app without having a Facebook account, a move that could further accelerate Messenger’s growth, and possibly even help the app to eventually have more users than Facebook itself.
The company announced yesterday (June 24) that users in Canada, the US, Peru and Venezuela are now able to sign up for Messenger with just their name and phone number. Facebook still encourages users to use their Facebook account for Messenger, pointing out in a blog post that it may help to find contacts, as well as access Messenger via Facebook’s website on their PCs.
Facebook’s decision to further decouple Messenger from its social network goes to show the growing importance of messaging for the company. Facebook acquired messaging app Whatsapp for US$16 billion (S$21.5 billion) in early last year and spun out Facebook’s own messaging functionality into the separate Facebook Messenger app last April.
Messenger has since become the most popular free app on Google Play, surpassing even the traditional Facebook app. Facebook chief executive officer Mark Zuckerberg revealed this month that Messenger now has 700 million monthly active users. That’s still less than Facebook’s 1.4 billion monthly active users, but Messenger is growing quickly: In November it had 500 million users; by March, it had 600 million. VARIETY.COM/REUTERS

Facebook to scale up free mobile Internet service to boost usage
MUMBAI — Facebook plans to scale up its service to offer free basic Internet on mobile phones, an executive said, after introducing the application in 17 developing countries over the past year.
In a blog post released to mark the first year of the initiative, Facebook said it will open a portal allowing any mobile operator to offer the service under its Internet.org platform. Facebook currently partners with specific operators to launch the service in different countries.
Internet.org has brought over 9 million people online over the past year, Mr Chris Daniels, vice president of product for Internet.org, told Reuters today (July 27). Facebook developed the platform with six technology partners to bring an estimated 4.5 billion unconnected people online, mainly in Latin America, Asia and Africa.
It offers pared-down web services for free to users, along with access to Facebook's own social network and messaging services.

Facebook ready to test giant drone for Internet service
MENLO PARK (California) — Facebook says it will begin test flights later this year for a solar-powered drone with a wingspan as big as a Boeing 737, in the next stage of its campaign to deliver Internet connectivity to remote parts of the world.
Engineers at the giant social network say they’ve built a drone with a 140-foot wingspan that weighs less than 1,000 pounds. Designed to fly at high altitudes for up to three months, it will use lasers to send Internet signals to stations on the ground.

A "dislike" is negative emotion, which should not be used, IMO.

CALIFORNIA — Facebook may finally be getting a button that lets you quickly express something beyond a “like”.
Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said yesterday (Sept 15) that people have been asking for a “dislike” button on the social media site for years.
Speaking at an event at Facebook's Menlo Park, California, headquarters that was streamed live online, Mr Zuckerberg acknowledged that “like” isn't always appropriate for some posts - about a tragic news event, for example - when people might want to express empathy.
Mr Zuckerberg said the company, however, has veered away from making a “dislike” button, which could be used to vote down other people's posts. He said the new button is ready to be tested soon and could be rolled out broadly depending on how it does. AP

SAN FRANCISCO — Facebook is studying the ancient Chinese game of Go for insights as it works on building an artificial brain — one that it hopes to turn into a virtual personal assistant that can also sort through a mountain of photos, videos and comments posted by its next billion or so users.
The social networking company is touting the work of its artificial intelligence (AI) team at an industry conference this week. Among its accomplishments: the development of software that can analyse a photo and answer questions about what it shows, or study a picture of toy blocks and predict whether they will fall over.

Facebook’s Free Basics plan blocked by India Internet ruling
NEW DELHI/MUMBAI — India introduced rules on Monday to prevent Internet service providers from having different pricing policies for accessing different parts of the Web, in a setback to Facebook Inc’s plan to roll out a pared-back free Internet service to the masses.
The new rules came after a two-month consultation process that saw Facebook launching a large advertising campaign in support of its Free Basics programme, which runs in more than 35 developing countries.
The programme offers pared-down Internet services on mobile phones, along with access to the company’s own social network and messaging services, without charge.

Facebook changes the like button globally to add more reactions
SAN FRANCISCO — Facebook has finally changed its iconic like button.
The social network has increased the number of options for reacting to posts, beyond “like”. Beginning Wednesday (Feb 23), people have five more choices: “Love”, “haha”, “wow”, “sad” and “angry”. Bloomberg Businessweek recently told the story of the project, which involved months of testing and tweaking to determine the best options. Users had long rallied for a “dislike” button, which the company rejected because it would create a negative atmosphere.
