It's between him and BG (Retd) Lee Fook Sun. Personally, I would prefer Vincent Chong due to this previous commercial background and would send a message that ST is more than just a defense business. Have nothing against the other guy, but I always felt his appointment to ST then was to represent MINDEF's interest.

Not vested, wishing speedy recovery to Pheng Hock.

Mr Patrick Choy, ST Kinetics' executive vice-president, explained that Singapore has no raw material.

Steel, for instance, has to be shipped here to be made into military equipment. The final product is then transported to customers in the United States, Europe or Asia.
The shipment of goods is costly and adds to the final price tag.
"So why not do it overseas in the country where our customers are? We can license our intellectual property to manufacturers there," he told The Straits Times.

ST Aerospace to reconfigure Air Canada's Airbus A330 cabins

This is ST Aerospace's second contract with Air Canada, after their first contract in 2013 where they reconfigured 12 Boeing 767-300 aircraft.

SINGAPORE: Commercial airframe maintenance, repair and overhaul provider Singapore Technologies (ST) Aerospace will reconfigure the cabins of eight of Air Canada's Airbus A330 aircraft, in their second contract with the airline.
In a news release issued on Monday (Nov 2), ST Aerospace said that it will be installing additional premium economy seats in each cabin and enlarging the economy class section. It will also set up an integrated audio and video on-demand system, and maintain checks for the entire fleet.
Upon completion of the prototype aircraft, ST Aerospace will submit applications for Supplemental Type Certificates from the US Federal Aviation Administration and Transport Canada Civil Aviation.
ST Aerospace, the aerospace arm of ST Engineering, said that the first A330 will be inducted in the third quarter of 2016, with the last aircraft planned for delivery by the first quarter of 2017.
This is ST Aerospace's second contract with Air Canada. For its first contract in 2013, it delivered 12 Boeing 767-300 aircraft to Air Canada after a full cabin reconfiguration programme which included engineering design, modification kit manufacturing, aircraft modification, certification, as well as overall programme management.
"We are pleased to select ST Aerospace for our A330 cabin reconfiguration programme,” said Mr George Psycharis, Senior Director, Airframe & Engine Maintenance of Air Canada. “ST Aerospace’s performance with our on-going airframe maintenance and reconfiguration projects was a key factor in our selection decision. We are confident this programme will be equally successful.”
"Additional work from a valued existing customer is always a sign of continued trust and confidence, especially in the aviation industry where turnaround time, cost efficiency and aircraft safety are of tantamount importance to airline operators,” said Mr Lim Serh Ghee, President of ST Aerospace.

One possible but remote clue about whether or not we get an light aircraft carrier or even 2 consider the following.

Participant of the F-35 joint strike fighter program or plans in place to purchase

Japan - License to build F-35, currently operates Hyuga Destroyer (Helicopter carrier)

Australia - Plans to purchase F-35. Recently took delivery of 2 vessels of Juan Carlos I Light Helicopter Carrier with ski-jump

South Korea - Plans to purchase F-35, operates Dokdo-class amphibious assault ship 1 built 1 more planned

Turkey - Plans to purchase F-35, plans to purchase Juan Carlos I Light Helicopter Carrier with ski-jump from Spain.

Singapore - Interested in F-35b as a security cooperative participant but no official comment and no plans for jmms

-- Non F-35 participants

Thailand - Operates Light aircraft carrier Chakri Narubet

Malaysia - To buy 2 mistral Light Helicopter carrier originally built for Russia.

Indonesia - No official plans but there is a PT Palindo marine display for a helicopter carrier and indonesia have so many thousands of islands. is not matter of if but when with neighbors all around getting assault ships and I read in the indian ocean they have to contend with India Navy intrusion and india have 2 real carrier battle groups.

update 25/4/2016 : Indonesia announced navmodernization plans recently "Minimum Essential force" by 2024 consists of additional 247 surface vessels and 12 submarines

China - already have 1 carrier and rumor of plans for up to 3 more in the coming years.

Seems like almost everybody have or already building or future plans for some kind of Light Helicopter carrier / Big Assault ship.

For Singapore.
Of course we are getting it lah no question. the clue will be in the future Singapore defence budget which I already monitoring closely Big Grin

My guess 1 possibility we could follow Turkey and Australia with the Juan Carlos why? Becos the F-35 allows to share data on situation awareness between allies so having similar platform allows better interoperability between allies is a good idea, another reason is sharing of cost and logistics. We could have 1 built in Singapore with tech transfers then a few years later we will have a second ship built entirely on our own or under license.

The second more remote possibility is italian light carrier cavour that is also F-35 capable built by Fincantieri reason being a lot of the weapon systems built into the cavour are already used by singapore navy like otomelara 76 gun, mbda aster missiles

Why would singapore need an assault capability? Retake back Christmas Island? Smile

"Air and surface-to-surface strikes are a specialised form of power projection... The primary power projection purposes of states are punitive attack and coercive threat." (1)

It gives a country many options to take the fight into someone's backyard and force him to the negotiating table. Furthermore, point defence is really tough.

At face value, the Endurance-160 multi-role support ship by ST Engineering Marine (2) is a helicopter carrier but it can be configured to take the F-35Bs (short takeoff/vertical landing variant) (3).
