Thanks MW.

Yes, it can be done.
Two ways:
1) backup the entire database by logging into mysql platform, and export the entire table into .sql format
2) backup through phpbb (only available to board version 3 and later) Administrator Control Panel

Hi Musicwhiz,

I have set up cron to backup the entire database every week to make sure that the threads are safe.

Hi Admin,

Thanks! That's a great move! Hope the old forumers start streaming back in soon to contribute to the growing number of threads here. Big Grin

Good Morning to all!

Also, one major reason why Afralug went offline was because there was a single point of contact i.e. Azlan. He disappeared and the forum went with him. I remember that prior to the Aug 1 down, there was another incident about a month or so before where Afralug went down for about 2 weeks or so. That time, we were lucky that Azlan came back and fixed it. This time, it seems he's gone for good.

After that incident, I did post that if the problem was due to funding or lack of time to handle the necessary administrative procedures for keeping the forum up, then I'd be willing to help out as I'm sure other forummers would. However, Azlan never got back to any of the posts on that. After all, behind every online personality, there is a human one that's susceptible to illness, accidents or perhaps other more pressing commitments.

So, Cyclone san (or do you prefer Guna?), please don't hesitate to ask any of us for help in terms of defraying costs (if there's a need to) or in terms of helping to keep the forum up and running (e.g contacting the forum server hosts in the event of any downtime etc.)

I personally have benefitted a lot from all the postings on Wallstraits and Afralug so I'm to willing to help out where I can.

Mr Sampling reporting in...

I'm quite IT savvy as well and I'm willing to offer my help FOC.

I notice this forum loads up pretty slow... Did some fact finding and noticed that the server is hosted in US.. hmmm probably better to find one in SG ? Smile

Hi kazukirai,

You can call me guna.

I have emailed Musicwhiz the username and password of the admin of valuebuddies.com. This is to anticipate, in case I run road. Big Grin

If the forum's traffic is increasing, I may need to set up a Donation or Advertisement or Both to cover the cost of hosting, etc. By that time, I really need your help.

Hi Sampling,

One of the reason the forum loads up pretty slow is that the forum is hosted on a shared hosting on a US$ 1 per month hosting plan. This is one method I use to make sure that the forum can last very long. Low cost.

If the forum's traffic is increasing, this kind of hosting is not sufficient.

I'm sure to seek you for help in the near future.Big Grin

Great Guna!
Good to know that you've got everything covered.

Feedback:
Unlike Sampling, the forum loads up at decent enough speed for me. But I'm not IT savvy so I can't say why.

Dear Forumers,

We have the esteemed d.o.g. on Value Buddies, but there is a value investor by the nickname of dydx who is still missing. If anyone should know how to contact him to invite him to join the forum, it would provide everyone with a lot more insights and analysis as I consider him a top-notch value investor!

So, please do help to contact him to inform him of this forum if you have his contact.

Dydx, if you are reading this, hope you can re-join this forum which is essentially an incarnation of the old Wallstraits/Afralug forum. Sadly though, all the old threads in which you had contributed your sharp analysis have now been lost.... Sad

Thanks!

Hi Cyclone (Admin),

Thanks, I have received the information on the username/password for this forum. However, being an IT-Idiot, I think I'll probably still need help from someone to bring the forum back up again should anything happen! But at least it addresses one of the concerns brought up - which is that control of the forum is vested in just one person.

Oh well I guess the saying goes - Don't put all your eggs in one basket (forum)! Haha.... Tongue
