^^ Tell that to SPH. It is $40m mistake.
Taking over the second one is even more stupid than the first one.

Am wondering if this posting on 24 June

has anything to do with this message that appeared the following day 25 June when accessing this forum and then the subsequent shut down?

Thank you for the support and contribution these years in making the forum a great place for hangout. Thank you once again.
If so, Admin may need help of a different sort... perhaps contribution to insurance premiums against potential litigation (if such exist)? or other ideas?
[note: a very robust reply was given within that thread to allay 'psolhawk's concern above, and the postings alluded to are what significantly differentiate the quality of this forum from others imho]

Dear Forumers,
Thanks for your support.
Our advertisement revenue is enough to cover the hosting package an other bills. With the current hosting plan, it easily handle the traffic loads. We also have a regular backup in action. From a technical perspective, I think there should be no problem, as you have experienced in these years although sometimes there were glitches.

This kind of premium is very very high. Is it $1M or $10M liability?
Best is state the facts. Don't use subjective words without facts. If you quote some where, put the source.

--> Does the backup include all software, settings, updates and data? It would save master admin many hours of tedious work. A good Clone software is a few hundred dollars I think.
Just ideas, master admin. You decide.

No need to worry too much about litigation,
Just put in the disclaimer at the homepage or issue a membership agreements / rules that all comments made are at risk of registered forum member.
Then if value buddies does get any warnings/complaints, admin can just ban the person IP or nick or just delete the thread, no biggie.
I think its unrealistic to ask members not to share opinion on investments, especially those we think are not of good value.
And since we are not promoting or doing any file sharing of music or media, should not be a target.
Any lawyers can add any advice?

If SPH willing to buy over VB, take it!
Afterall, how often do we come across a god-send Godfather.
Thereafter, set up another forum.
And after some years, if it gets repeated, wow, VB will be multi-bagger!
Forums don't move people, its people who move the forums!

Get the money 1st and setup another BIGGER value forum lah!
I am sure when SPH buy a website, there will be a non-compete clause. So after selling to SPH, Cyclone will have to go on a round the world tour and visit every disney park while waiting for the clause to expire.

Hardware one-off issue is easy to solve.. .we just chip in and pay.
Contingent liabilities are much more tricky and difficult. Any lawyers or insurance agents that can advise?

Defamation laws exists in some form in every society. However even without the potential threat of law suit, we should be responsible in what we post. It is one thing to opine on the quality of management of a company but quite another to allege misconduct without proof. The latter is irresponsible, unfair and poses an unnecessary risk to the forum.
Serious businessmen are particularly sensitive when it comes to public perception of their integrity and understandably so. During an AGM I attended recently, a shareholder got carried away while pressing for more dividend and started to allege that board is withholding material information from shareholder. The normally smiling and mild manner Chairman suddenly changed and shot back in raised voice "what is your allegation?".
Personally I prefer VB over websites like CNA because there is less rumour mongering and personal attack here in VB. While we all speculate from time to time, over here there is a lot more substance. I hope all participants and beneficiaries of this website will strive to keep it this way.
Vested as a beneficiary.
