The new Nokia Lumia is actually quite impressive in terms of user interface. But like what you guys said, the windows interface was a turn-off.

IMO, they might have fared better if they have opted for Android. At least, I will have made the switch for my hp. Tongue

Former Nokia software team unveils its first smartphone

HELSINKI - A group of ex-Nokia software developers unveiled its first smartphone yesterday (May 20), aiming to prove their former employer wrong by making a success of a technology dropped by the Finnish mobile phone maker.

Jolla was founded by Nokia’s former MeeGo software team that was shut down after the company decided to switch to Microsoft’s Windows Phone software in 2011.

Nokia takes swipe at Apple music service

SAN FRANCISCO — Nokia may lag far behind its rivals, but the Finnish mobile business business still took a swipe at Apple’s music streaming service yesterday to point out that it got there first.

Apple said today (June 11) it would launch a Spotify-style music streaming service, iTunes Radio, allowing users to listen to music over the Internet for US$25 (S$31) a year. The Cupertino technology titan has already built up a music following thanks to its iTunes music download service, putting it in a strong position to shake up the music market.

However, Nokia, was quick to dismiss Apple’s new service as lagging behind the market, reported The Daily Telegraph.

Mr Jyrki Rosenberg, Vice President of entertainment at Nokia, said: “We launched our streaming radio service in 2011.

Nokia unveil low-cost, 3G-enabled phones

STOCKHOLM — Smartphones are not all the rage, it seems. Nokia today announced three phones that are reminiscent of a time gone past.

The Nokia 207. 208 and 208 dual-SIM phones are candybar phones that offers quad-band 2G and the faster tri-band 3G data connection in colourful candybar shells, said phone blog GSM Arena. The low-cost handphones also feature Bluetooth 3.0 connectivity, has a 3.5mm AV port and even a microsUSB port for PC syncing and charging.

The 1020mAh battery may seem small but Nokia said it is capable of holding charge for more than a month on stand-by. If you do not mind squinting at the 2.4-inch QVGA display, you can even check your Facebook, Twitter, as well as watch clips on YouTube. Nokia said popular text message app Whatsapp will be available for the 208 initially, reported GSM Arena.

The Nokia 207 does not come with a camera while the 208 has one with 1.3 megapixel resolution

Why Nokia didn’t choose Android to replace Symbian

LONDON - A perennial question that revolves around Nokia is: why didn’t it choose to go with Android to replace Symbian when it decided to kill that as its smartphone operating system in late 2010?

It is known that Nokia did discuss the idea with Google - but did not follow through. That led to the tweet from Google’s Vic Gundotra just ahead of the announcement of the Windows Phone tieup in February 2011 that “two turkeys do not make an eagle”.

Nokia needs more than just Lumia...

Nokia’s halting turnaround hit by weak handset sales

HELSINKI — A disappointing set of quarterly sales figures for Nokia’s smartphones and basic models raised the pressure on its chief executive yersterday (July 18) and took a bite out of the company’s share price.

Investors are hoping that its Lumia smartphone range, which CEO Stephen Elop decided to base on Microsoft’s untested Windows Phone software in 2011, will help the company revive its ailing fortunes and close the yawning lead of frontrunners Samsung and Apple, but progress has been slower than analysts expected.

Nokia shares fell as much as 6 per cent after the company said it shipped 7.4 million Lumia phones in the second quarter, up 32 per cent from the first quarter but fewer than the 8.1 million units forecast in a Reuters poll of analysts.

Sales of regular mobile phones, which still account for over half of its device revenues and are a valuable source of revenue while Nokia waits for Lumia sales to take off, were also weaker than expected.

Shipments of such handsets fell 4 per cent from the previous quarter to 53.7 million units, while the market’s average forecast had been 56.2 million.

Yes, Nokia needs more than just phone. "Phablet" is nice, but lack of the advantages as first mover... Samsung and Apple have already made the market very crowded already...

BTW, "phablet" as "common name for smartphones with screens over 5 inches" is new to me. Learn new word today...Big Grin

Nokia to launch large-screen smartphones next month: Sources

HELSINKI - Nokia plans to unveil new, large-screen mobile handsets next month to revamp its Lumia smartphone lineup and challenge rival Samsung’s dominance in increasingly popular phablet devices, sources said.

Nokia has developed more than one new mobile device and is due to announce them at an event in New York late next month, said the sources familiar with the plan.

The sources would not elaborate on details such as specifications and price but said the new models will include a phablet, a common name for smartphones with screens over 5 inches. Technology blogs have also said that Nokia plans to launch a tablet device.

Nokia officials were not immediately available for comment.

Will you buy it? Informal survey on kids of friends and relatives, on Windows phone, none seemed satisfied with it...

I doubt its success, especially priced similar as iPad

Nokia ‘to release Windows RT tablet’ on Sept 26

ESPOO (Finland) — Nokia is preparing to launch a 10.1-inch tablet running the Windows RT version of Windows 8, according to reports.

The tablet, codenamed Sirius, will look like a larger version of Nokia’s Lumia Windows Phone products, according to an article on tech news website the Verge.

Pictures which appeared to be a prototype of the device were leaked on a Chinese website last month, and rumours about the collaboration between Windows and the Finnish phone manufacturer have been circulating online ever since.

The Sirius tablet will be priced at a similar level to the iPad, with the company refraining from trying to undercut the Apple product initially, the Verge reported.

And it suggested that Nokia would unveil the tablet at a launch event in New York on Sept 26, along with a six-inch Windows Phone handset to be released later in the year.

The reported tablet would be thinner and slightly lighter than the current iPad, which weighs 652g and is 9.4mm thin.
