Interesting to see Challenger slowly but surely expanding their operations into new malls in 2011, and I am sure this will have a positive impact on their top and bottom line. It will be interesting to see how the Company grows over time.
P.S. - I just realized Challenger only releases half-yearly results, similar to MTQ. So I guess the next results release is slated for Feb 2011.
Not vested.

Unf, that's a lousy location. So far, Best Denki and 2 other computer shops have bailed out. Countless others (eg. Sakae) have come & go in the wing opposite Daiso, which is where I think Challenger will be situated.
Nonetheless, they have some good locations coming up: Nex, Clementi Mall, & Bedok Pt.

The new Challenger store at Rivervale Mall is supposed to occupy an area of about 3,200 sq. ft. - i.e. not a big store. So even if the location doesn't work out, the related financial exposure - recurrent rentals, cost of renovation, etc. - should not pose a major problem to Challenger.
We should bear in mind that Challenger has a solid track record in building a very successful retail network so far over the some 7 years since its IPO in Jan04. CEO Loo Leong Thye is a smart and prudent chap - I don't think he will just open another new store if the location and rental are not good enough. Based on my recollection, Challenger has not closed any store in Singapore so far.

I believed there used to be a Challenger at Century Square (Or is it Tampines Mall?)
It closed down, about a year later, it started an outlet at Tampines 1.

Sim Lim Square is one.
Having said that, choosing a wrong location is part and parcel of growing the chain. I'm not expecting Loo to hit it perfectly - nobody does. But given the failure rate in Rivervale Mall, I think shareholders might want to temper their expectation from the latest announcement.

Challenger used to be at DBS Centre in Tampines. That building was torn down, and rebuilt into today's Tampines One. So, they're back to where they were.
Back in the old days, Mrs Loo was managing Tampines while Mr Loo was @ Funan. I dunno if this is still the arrangement.

i wonder how profitable is challenger's customer care & repair service?
if challenger is able to leverage their repair & customer care service on far away outlying neighborhood, it will be a plus maybe because there should be quite a number of people who live far would settle for nearby convenient repair service location to fix their electronic hardware

I think its more of a value added service for their customers. More assurance and support if anything goes wrong. But frankly, with all the IT shows all round year and prices of new products getting lower after their launches, I doubt anyone would repair.
On a bright note, trading volume is starting to pick up today at 300 lots @ 0.415 to 0.420. Lets see if interest starts to pick up.

Shaw Theatres nex opens 2 Dec
1 Dec , Moviegoers in Singapore can anticipate a new cineplex when Shaw Theatres nex opens at Serangoon Central mall on 2 December 2010.
According the press release, the cineplex is said to have the most number of 3D digital halls at any single cinema location and a dedicated in-cinema lift for the handicapped. In addition, all 10 halls will have two allocated lots for wheelchairs.
Occupying a space of 3,700 square metres, Shaw Theatres nex boasts 10 cinema halls and a seating capacity of 1,265 seats.
Although located in a suburban mall, Shaw Theatres is investing and equipping six out of the 10 halls with digital technology with five being 3D digital halls.
Shaw Theatres will also introduce the "Premiere Screen" concept at two halls, providing deluxe leather seats and premium dine-in services.
Mr Mark Shaw, Executive Vice President of Operations, said: "nex's position as a major suburban mall well-connected by public transport makes it an attractive venue, hence our significant investment at this location. We are equipping five halls with 3D digital technology. There is no other cinema with as many 3D halls in one location. To complement the strong emphasis on technology, the new Shaw Theatres' design is clean and contemporary. Our open-concept box office is designed to bring us closer to our patrons."
