Google aims to begin drone package deliveries in 2017

WASHINGTON — Internet giant Alphabet Inc, the new holding company for Google, expects to begin delivering packages to consumers via drones sometime in 2017, the executive in charge of its drone effort said yesterday (Nov 2).

Mr David Vos, the leader for Alphabet’s Project Wing, said his company is in talks with the Federal Aviation Administration and other stakeholders about setting up an air traffic control system for drones that would use cellular and Internet technology to coordinate unmanned aerial vehicle flights at altitudes under 152m.

“Our goal is to have commercial business up and running in 2017,” he told an audience at an air traffic control convention near Washington.

Humans are slamming into driverless cars and exposing a key flaw

SOUTHFIELD (Michigan) — The self-driving car, that cutting-edge creation that’s supposed to lead to a world without accidents, is achieving the exact opposite right now: The vehicles have racked up a crash rate double that of those with human drivers.

The glitch?

They obey the law all the time, as in, without exception. This may sound like the right way to program a robot to drive a car, but good luck trying to merge onto a chaotic, jam-packed highway with traffic flying along well above the speed limit. It tends not to work out well. As the accidents have piled up — all minor scrape-ups for now — the arguments among programmers at places like Google Inc and Carnegie Mellon University are heating up: Should they teach the cars how to commit infractions from time to time to stay out of trouble?

Google computers defeat human players at 2,500-year-old board game

SAN FRANCISCO — Computers have learned to master backgammon, chess, and Atari’s Breakout, but one game has always eluded them. It’s a Chinese board game called Go invented more than 2,500 years ago. The artificial-intelligence challenge has piqued the interest of researchers at Google and Facebook, and the search giant has recently made a breakthrough.

Google has developed the first AI software that learns to play Go and is able to beat some professional human players, according to an article to be published yesterday (Jan 27) in the science journal Nature. Google DeepMind, the London research group behind the project, is now getting the software ready for a competition in Seoul against the world’s best Go player in March.

I wish a success of the project. It will provide a low-cost option to provide the connectivity.

Google’s balloon-powered Internet service enters Sri Lanka for tests

COLOMBO — Google’s balloon-powered high-speed Internet service known as “Project Loon” began its first tests in Sri Lanka today (Feb 15) ahead of a planned joint venture with Colombo, the country’s top IT official said.

One of three balloons that will be used in the trials entered Sri Lankan airspace today, the Information and Communication Technology Agency chief Muhunthan Canagey said.

“The first balloon entered our airspace this morning. It was launched from South America,” Mr Canagey told AFP. “It is currently over southern Sri Lanka.”

He said a Google team was expected later this week to test flight controls, spectrum efficiency and other technical matters.

Human vs AI: Go champ confident in US$1m match — for now

SEOUL — The world champion of Go said on Monday (Feb 22) he would beat a supercomputer by a “landslide” in a US$1 million (S$1.4 million) match next month, but acknowledged that Artificial Intelligence would soon overpower the Asian board game’s best human brains.

South Korean Lee Se-Dol is due to take on the Google-owned AlphaGo in one of the most hotly-anticipated showdowns the ancient game has ever seen.

The 32-year-old is one of the greatest players in modern history, having won 18 international titles.

03 Mar 2016 06:46
[SAN FRANCISCO] Google on Wednesday said it is testing ways to let people use digital wallets without having to even take smartphones out of their pockets.

The Internet colossus is dabbling with ways to make its Android Pay system for smartphones hands-free, with verification by facial recognition, Google product manager Pali Bhat said in a blog post.

Facial recognition to make payment no easy task. I wonder how they going to differentiate identical twins. Anyone interested to go for cosmetic surgery to look like Warren Buffet, or our very own remiser king Peter Lim or our PM Lee?

Google AI wins first match against Korean Go game champion

SEOUL — Google DeepMind’s artificial intelligence system beat a top-ranked player of the board game Go in a televised match in South Korea, providing the first evidence that the company’s software has attained super-human status at a challenging 2,500-year-old strategy contest.

The Internet company is playing a five-match tournament against Mr Lee Sedol, who Google said has been the top-ranked Go player of the past decade, to show off the capabilities of software developed by its London-based AI subsidiary DeepMind.

In a closed system with fixed rules the calculator will eventually win

Reading between my lines, I don't think our dynamic world works so simply. Unless like in futuristic world portrayed by Hollywood that humans themselves purposely make everything systematic and regimental.

As a science and finance guy, I am ironically very concern that people put too much faith in technologies and numbers, without clear understanding of the axioms and first principles.

AI machine, should be pretty different from conventional machine e.g. calculator, otherwise there no need to big R&D monies.

I am optimistic on the technologies. It is unlikely to replace human in some area e.g. innovation, but is able to help more unstructured work.
