Chipmaker Nvidia sees fewer crypto miners, more gamers in future

(Reuters) - Too many cryptocurrency clients and fewer cloud computing orders than expected underwhelmed Nvidia Corp (NVDA.O) investors on Thursday, although the graphics chip maker said a supply shortage that hit its core video game audience had eased.

The U.S. company best known for chips that enhance video game graphics has diversified into an array of businesses including artificial intelligence, self-driving cars and digital mining, but investors are most concerned with its inroads in the market for cloud computing.

Revenue from Nvidia’s data center business, which powers cloud-based services such as Amazon.com’s (AMZN.O) Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Corp’s (MSFT.O) Azure as well as Alphabet Inc’s (GOOGL.O) Google Cloud, rose 71 percent to $701 million, but missed analysts’ estimate of $703 million, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

The Santa Clara, California company for the first time disclosed that it made $289 million in sales - about 9 percent of its overall $3.2 billion in revenue - from chips for mining cryptocurrencies.

Current two core biz

1. Gaming GPU
2. Datacenter GPU

1. Autonomous driving chip - Tesla have own chip. Others trying to catchup need to be fast and the easiest way to narrow the gap is using Nvidia chip. Don't use Mobileye because it is a blackbox you don't understand.

2. VR - Nvidia is position itself to be the base hardware software for others to build virtual world. BMW is training it's AGV in this virtual world before roll out to real world. go check out Nvidia tech day video 2020.

3. ARM - Nvidia want to tilt ARM research so that can make CPU. CPU run on x86 while mobile run on ARM. What if we move CPU (PC, datacenter) to ARM... .then mobile also ARM... whole world can be ARM. Just need build one set of software for ARM... no need build one set for ARM and another set for x86... make it easier for all software / devices to talk to each other without a translator...

Risk - Intel - Pat Gelsinger is a architecture guy. can he tilt the world back to x86? yet to be seen.

More competition for Intel. But not the first attempt by Nvidia. Personal opinion: they have never shown exceptional talent/execution outside of their core competence: GPU.

If I'm an investor in AMD/Intel/Nvidia/Apple etc. I will wait till they actually deliver.

Nvidia launches new products to plug cars, factories into its Omniverse

DETROIT, Nov 9 (Reuters) - Nvidia (NVDA.O) is launching new technology to expand its reach in the automotive industry, including a virtual driving assistant that can park a standard car and a system to speed up the training of autonomous vehicles.

As part of its fall new product event, centered around its "Omniverse" simulation technology, Nvidia Chief Executive Jensen Huang said the company will begin offering automakers a system called Drive Concierge. It uses Nvidia hardware and artificial intelligence software to provide a variety of services, including an autonomous driving function that allows a human-driven vehicle to park itself.

Another extension of the Omniverse strategy will be a system called "Omniverse Replicator" that will simplify and speed up the tasks required to create a virtual world for training automated vehicles.

Nvidia, the world's biggest maker of graphics and artificial intelligence chips, has been pushing for years to expand technology originally developed for computer gaming and graphics into the auto industry.

Now, Nvidia is looking to capitalize on the intense competition among automakers to develop vehicles that can drive themselves and deliver sophisticated entertainment and information to the humans on board.

The firm is working to put high-powered chips and software into vehicles, and also sell technology that can create a highly detailed simulation of a factory to help manufacturers cut costs when building new plants, or an artificial universe for a robotaxi or self-driving truck to learn how to drive.

Nvidia now has $8 billion in automotive revenue booked over the next six years, including business from automated trucking and robotaxi companies, said Danny Shapiro, Nvidia's vice president of automotive.

Brings to mind how Apple created an ecosystem .... is this the holy grail to seek out super multi-baggers ?  Big Grin Any potential game changers that VBs are monitoring ?

Based on my understanding of the article, I was thinking there's probably a good chance for China to catch up on advanced A.I. chips one day as it wld probably have lots of local A.I. programmers who can consistently invent using China made chips ....

How Nvidia Built a Competitive Moat Around A.I. Chips
