In one of its first moves as owner of the South China Morning Post, Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. removed the paywall on the newspaper’s online and mobile editions, signaling an emphasis on generating more traffic. As WSJ’s Alyssa Abkowitz reports:
Quote:The move to make content free, which Alibaba had flagged in December, comes as many media companies erect paywalls around their content.
Alibaba, which has said the newspaper’s new leadership would preserve its independence, depicted its move to free online content as aimed to satisfy the appetite for more varied coverage of China.
“A global community of China stakeholders will demand insightful and trusted news and commentaries from a within-the-region perspective,” said Tammy Tam, editor in chief of the South China Morning Post, in a statement late Tuesday as the acquisition was completed.
Analysts say the purchase also shows Alibaba’s desire to use peripheral media assets to generate more ads and push traffic to its e-commerce platforms and broaden its entertainment presence.
